Manning Home "Rookie" Jersey currently at the Pro Football Hall of Fame...

There is an obvious difference in the nameplate font. I was wondering if forum members who collect Manning jerseys and may have one from 1998 or other Colts jersey from that year, could shed some light on what the nameplate font should look like. It appears that the Mastro Manning's nameplate font is similar to the Colts Reebok era jerseys...thoughts?

MEARS has asked Mastro to pull the Peyton Manning jersey while they do additional research.

Nice job by Chris and nice job by MEARS in changing the letter.

Lot #878 Peyton Manning Colts jersey in current Mastro Auctions

August 28 2007 at 10:46 PM Troy R. Kinunen (kinunent@hotmail.com) (Login TroyKinunen (http://www.network54.com/Profile/TroyKinunen))A question was posed to us by Chris Arone with respect to lot #878 1998 Peyton Manning road jersey in the current Mastro Auction. A specific question was asked about the font used on the MANNING nameplate.

As part of our evaluation, we checked the current available images of Peyton Manning and found examples of home jerseys in the MEARS database, Getty Images, and the EDGE rookie card. The images of Manning in a white road jersey on Getty were from practice squad games and the nameplates were not applied.

Therefore, MEARS is requesting that Mastro Auctions pull the lot from the auction. Our letter will be ammended to " inconclusive ". I will begin searching for actual game footage from road games which will allow us to examine the nameplates. Any new information will be provided to both Mastro Auctions and posted here.

Thank you Chris for the question and the additional information you provided. A revised letter with the "inconclusive " findings will be provided to Mastro Auctions and this change will be reflected in our online LOO section found in the members area. In addition, we will offer Mastro Auctions a refund for the cost of the letter and we apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused Mastro Auctions and their staff.

Sincerely,

Troy R. Kinunen

This information was posted on the mears auction website

Wednesday, August 29th MEARS contacted us and asked us to pull this jersey from the auction so they can perform further evaluation. A few days ago it was brought to our attention that concerns were expressed related to the font on the nameplate, specifically the "G". Since this time the Mastro Staff has researched font styles in order to find an appropriate exemplar. We did find a Rookie era Manning shirt that displayed the same style "G" and had impeccable provenance tying it to Manning. Unfortunately this was a blue home example, which we felt was inconclusive for validating this jersey. At this time we felt it appropriate to withdraw the jersey from the auction so MEARS, Lou Lampson and Mastro Auctions can finalize our evaluation.

One can honestly believe that MEARS will continue to research this jersey, however, Lampson?

He recently gave the Jordan college warm-up a passing grade when MEARS rejected it, causing the FBI to get involved.

By far, the best joke of the day!
