Lets see your latest pick-ups for September:

Latest addition to my Red Sox collection, 2007 Manny Ramirez Sam bat absolutely hammered with game use, this bat went to war!

I was expecting to have had the opportunity to pickup Adrian Cardenas' GU jerseys from this season with the Blueclaws, but he ended up buying them all! So here are my two pickups so far for September. The first pic is a MLB authenticated game used ball from the 2007 Futures Game that was pitched by Pedro Beato and hit by Adrian Cardenas for a single (in his only at-bat) in the sixth inning. This is cool for me as this is the actual ball he hit AND it is his first MLB authenticated hit!
The second ball is a ball pitched by Carlos Carrasco and was hit by Jay Bruce for a triple in the 2nd inning! Again it was the actual ball that was hit for the triple! I believe this is also Jay Bruce's first MLB authenticated hit as well! You don't see those for sale very often!

I was fortunate to pick up a Rick Ankiel game-used bat from the Cardinals Authentics Store at the stadium. As you probably know, Rick debuted as an outfielder on 8/9 after a career as a pitcher (and a long, improbable climb back through the minors, which was hampered by injury). Rick hit a HR that first game and then hit two more on 8/11 on a nationally televised game. Based on the handle tape pattern, I think my bat may be the one he used in those games.

Eric

I bought it off a board member on extremeskins.com. He bought it from PSI and had is signed by Portis. I almost paid $1800.00 for an unwashed one last year that was used during the Jacksonville OT win, but got this one for much less and it has great wear.

It looks like you have a pretty rare piece there. From what I can tell, the only regular season game where the Redskins wore the red jersey was 11-13-05 versus Tampa Bay

Thanks for looking it up for me. The team repair is located right where I put the circle. You can't see a rip in the picture, but I would say that it looks like a mtch. What do you think?

This hasnt arrived yet, and I hope that I dont jinx myself by posting pics of it, but I paid for it therefore, I own it. :) Bat was purchased from a non-collector who said that he got it a few years ago through a friendship with former teammate Scott Service. Seller said that the bat is uncracked but then again he may not really know how to tell. Grace has always been on my list as one of my favorite bats that I wanted to pick up if the price was right and this time, it was. Nice bat from a semi-star who never really got the appreciation he deserved. Grace was a 3 time all star, lifetime .303 hitter over 16 seasons, had the most hits in the 90's (41 more than Gwynn), 4 gold gloves, and won a World Series in 2001. Grace and Pete Rose are the only 2 players to lead a decade in hits and that are not in the HOF.

My Mark Grace bat arrived today! More photos shown earlier in this thread. It is gorgeous. Grace was always one of my favorites. Bat has at least 7 ball marks that I found plus numerous bat rack marks as well as pine tar on the handle so thick that it looks like chocolate. Its from Grace's last season, 2003. The seller said that he got it from Scott Service, a pitcher who was Grace's teammate in 2003. You just wouldnt believe what I paid for this little beauty!

I've managed to collect four of Mark's Diamondbacks bats, and gotten them signed - two from '01, and one each from '02 and '03. One of the '01 bats is a much-used post-season bat ('MG 01' on the knob) for which I paid a pretty penny; the others were in the 200-300 $ range.

Ironically, a Scott Service DBacks bat is one of the things I'm looking for. I've got one of his Reds bats, but that's as close as I've been able to come.

I purchased it and brought it home to compare to my bat. Not only does the tape pattern match, but other consistent characteristics (ball marks, ink transfer, weight ring, etc.) also are obvious. I think I can now say with certainty that I have THE bat he used that day.

godwulf - Grace has always been one of my favorites. I dont mind telling you that I was a little nervous on this purchase. The seller was a non collector from Ohio. He was verrrrryyyyy slooooow at returning emails. We made a verbal agreement and I waited and waited to finalize it. What do you think a bat like this would go for? I'll tell you know that I bought it for the grand total of $50 plus shipping.

As for Service, I just mailed him a letter asking him about the bat since the seller said that he got it from Service. I'll let you know what he says if he replies.

A great deal, no doubt! Right now, a bat like that would probably find a buyer in the $125-150 range...on eBay, anyway...I'm not really all that familiar with any other sales venue, to be honest.

Gracie's Cubs bats seem to fetch more - maybe even double that - despite there actually being a lot more of his Cubs bats than DBacks bats out there, just because of the Grace-Chicago identification factor.

godwulf - yeah thats about how much I figured. This bat was originally on ebay and the seller had one lousy pic. It had no bites for a few days so I contacted him and just threw a number at him and he went for it. I was kind of surprised. I figured that it would sell for at least double that. Its got some great use and that pine tar looks like a melted chocolate bar. Its a high batch number so I know it was probably one of the last ones he used.

Thanks!

Astrocollector, Hey funny note on the first bat on your pictures, Mike Simms. I was standing next to Will Clarks locker while Simms and Clark were teamates with the Rangers. Clark was using Simms rose colored bats at the time and Will Clark yelled at Simms to come to his locker. He pulled out one of Simm's bats and asked him in the best lousiana accent "why in the hell is there a star next to your name on this bat?" Simms laughed and told the story where Louisville Slugger asked him to sign his name three times and put a star next to the best signature for them to use on the bat. Well, if you look at the Simms bat you see Louisville included the star next to Simms name. Pretty funny stuff i thought. Cool collection.

I was able to obtain David Wells 1st Game Used Dodgers Jersey, the one he used on August 26, 2007 against the NY Mets.

Even better, I met David at a Dodgers Game and he signed it and he remembered it, however he didn't inscribe it as game used.

Too bad the Dodgers imploded this last week.

For the record, Boomer was very generous with his time to me and many of the loyal Dodgers Fans who welcomed him to his new team.

Yes, you are correct...

Who knows, maybe the sports writers will do him right and place him in the HOF, but I wouldn't bet on it even though he has amassed almost 240 wins, a perfect game, a couple of World Series Rings and a reputation as the go to guy in the need to win game category.

Definately a player as a fan you hate, unless he's on your team!

Howard....

I've only had the jersey for a day or two, but I'll consider it. Sounds like it would mean a lot more to you than to me, and I respect that. If I did decide to sell it, it would be for exactly what I paid for it - $315 plus shipping - and no more.

If you do end up with the jersey, I think you'll be shocked by how small it is. It's an adult size 'small', but appears even smaller than that - almost like a child's garment. It's definitely her's - the MLB Authentication hologram checks out...she's just a tiny woman, apparently.

Anyway, I will think about it and let you know in a few days, at most.

Nice with the ol' Solly Hemus bat. Solly was the Jacksonville Suns manager when I was a kid. He was managing there in '66 when I saw Tom Seaver pitch against the Rochester Red Wings. Seaver, at the time, was a much heralded young phenom who became a Met after a strange lottery. He was huge news even at 21. Hemus had a few good years in the early 50s with St. Louis.

Speaking of St Patty's day jerseys, I also picked up a Dodgers St Patrick's day jersey at a silent auction at Dodger Stadium which I would imagine from 2007 as it has no name on the back and the number is 79...the Dodgers just said it was a minor league player...

It has proper tagging 0063...

Does anyone know who wore number 79 in spring training for the Dodgers?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I haven't been able to pin it down.

I don't have any photos to post, but I'm very happy about a couple of jersey pickups I made earlier this month.

I'm a huge Matt Williams fan, so after he went to fill in as Manager for the last month or two of the DBacks' AA Mobile BayBears' season, after Brett Butler suffered a stroke, I got to thinking about whether I might be able to get my hands on one of his uniform jerseys when the season ended.

I emailed the team, before the season was over, asking that I be contacted if they had a team-used jersey sale or auction, as a lot of minor league teams will do, but never heard back from them. Shortly after the season ended, I saw on the BayBears website that they were selling the team's 2007 game-used jerseys, and they listed the ones still available - of course Matty's was not among them...it had already been sold.

Early the next morning, I called Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile and spoke with a young lady, who took my credit card order for pitching coach Dan Carlson's jersey. I told her about my earlier email, and that I was really disappointed not to have had an opportunity to get ahold of one of Matty's jerseys.

A couple of minutes after we hung up, she called back. She had spoken to somebody else in the organization, and had been advised that they still had two of Matty's BayBears jerseys; the white home jersey had been sold, and Matty had taken the red one with him...but they had his white vest-style jersey, and a blue BP jersey that they'd also worn as an alternate uniform. I was thrilled, of course, and asked her to send both of those along to me, in addition to the Carlson jersey.

Matty does one or two signings a year here in the Phoenix area, where he still lives - as a broadcaster for, and part owner of, the Diamondbacks - and I can't wait for him to see these great jerseys and get him to sign them for me.

Back to my St Patrick's Day Dodgers Jersey...it would have to be from 2006 as every 2007 example I've seen had a name on the back, at least for the 40 man roster.

Help me out here, I'm sure that there are those who post here that went to Spring Training in Florida and would know if the only the 40 man Dodger Roster had names or if all who played in a game did?

Otherwise the jersey would be from 2006...

I will be going to Vero Beach this year and maybe I will get an answer then. But it sure would be nice to know sooner!!!

I hear he's doing fairly well, though...recovering back here in the Phoenix area now.
