i too would be interested to know when the bulls wore these shirts. it's not a typical "warm up" jacket, but a "shooting shirt". it'd seem that they'd wear them during the pre-game warmups but after viewing some old bulls games from 1987-88 and 1988-89, i couldn't find anyone ever wearing these "shooting shirts" during those pre-game warmups. during the pre-game warmups, they'd wear the typical warmup suits which consisted of the jacket and matching pants. they were the same warmups that the players would be seen wearing on the bench during the game. i remember following the bulls pretty closely during the late 80s and i can't recall seeing these shooting shirts. nowadays players can be seen wearing both warmup suits and shooting shirts during the pregame warmups but i don't recall that being the case back the late 80s. (i'm not stating 'facts' here, simply what i remember).

here a few video stills from the 1987-88 season showing the suits they wore during warmups. some of the videos i saw showed them in the locker room before games. it seems they usually put their uniforms on, then put on their warmup suits and trotted out in those. never saw any shooting shirts during that season.

for the 1988-89 season, the bulls warmup suits changed to this style:

what's interesting though is that lelands once sold a jordan "shooting shirt" like this one, only it was from 1990 and was made by champion. here's the lelands shirt:

http://www.lelands.com/bid.aspx?auctionid=205&lot=2352

so they wore them at least from 1987-1990? i don't ever remember seeing them on court. during 1989 and 1990, all i remember seeing were the typical long-sleeved warmup suits. if anyone has any knowledge about these shooting shirts, i'd be interested in hearing it.

anyway, while i was perusing videos, i noticed at the end of the 1989 eastern conference finals (vs pistons) jordan walked to the bench and completely untucked his jersey. the surprising thing to see was that there didn't seem to be any tagging on the outside. i've never seen a jordan bulls gamer on the market that didn't have tagging on the outside.

This is real nice research. I know for a fact that the Bulls wore these shooting shirts in the 1984-85 and the 1985-86 seasons. They were made by Rawlings. Let's re-trace our footsteps. Can anyone find one of these Sand Knit shooting shirts worn by a player other than Jordan? I have seen many of these MacGregor Sand Knit shooting shirts with either the "88" or "89" year tag in collar...ALL worn by Jordan. There was a BLANK one with no name or number that recently sold on eBay. Anyone have the link? They were either team-issued or retail (not advertised as such).

warren,

you're saying that in 84/85 and 85/86 these shooting shirts were worn during the pregame shoot around? i'm assuming you've actually seen them worn?

i've never seen them worn at all. in practices they'd wear those mesh practice jerseys and during the pre-game shoot around all i ever saw them wearing were the standard warmup suits.

here are some more video stills, beginning in jordan's rookie year.

if anyone has any photo of any chicago bull wearing this style of shooting shirt from 1986-1990, could you please share it?

greg: i have to assume that GFC has some sort of photographic evidence that the bulls used this style of shooting shirt. you could just ask GFC for their evidence.

I'm stumped. A while back, home(white) and away(red) pullover shooting shirts of Jawaan Oldam sold on eBay. They were obtained from a storage locker formerly rented by Oldham (along with other personal possesions). Most teams of the mid to late 80s wore pullover shooting shirts for pre-game "shoot-arounds". They also wore button-front warm-ups in the team warm-up or "lay-up line". The shooting shirts were not worn on the bench during the game. The shoot-arounds are the player's personal warm-up time (back in the day, I saw players wear the shooting shirt or just a t-shirt). The shoot-arounds were done at the players' discretion and were not team-oriented (a couple of hours before game time.) From the link posted by Zonker, you can see there were many, many photos taken of Jordan...but none with the shooting shirt. I also can't find photos of ANY team wearing a shooting shirt from the 80s, but I did see them in person.

In 1988/89, the Portland Trail Blazers also wore a special "shoot-around" jersey. It is made of super thin black mesh, 1/2 zipper neck, with BLAZERS sewn on front in 2 color tackle twill, similar to their gamer jerseys. The back features their last name, in single colored white tackle twill, vertical arch. The tagging is exactly the same as the Bulls pre-games in question. I had the entire teams, and still have a Drexler in my collection.

I can't locate a sinlge photo of these being worn, either!

Back to the Bulls pre-games in question, I have a 1988 red Jordan, exactly the same as the one in this thread. I too have never located a photo of Jordan or any Bulls player wearing these. I was told from a Bulls contact back in 1990 that these were worn during "media" times, i.e., before the general public entered the arena, and when the media would conduct interviews. If it's the case, there should be a photo somewhere.

warren,

you know more about bball than me. by "shoot around" i was referring to the pre-game warmups that occurred just prior to the players going back to the bench in time for the introductions and subsequent game time. the warmups where all the fans were already in the stands. i guess i used the wrong term. for the pregame warmups, i've only ever seen warmup suits worn during those days. for the shoot around, you're referring to some private, closed to the public, practice. i've seen a few photos of those and, as you said, mostly just saw the players wearing tshirts or those reversible mesh practice jerseys that they'd wear during scrimmages.

at any rate, the odd thing about this particular case is that, unlike oldham or the trailblazers, jordan was the most photographed athlete of the day. ie: i can understand there not being a photo of oldham or even pippen or of the trailblazers, but jordan seemed to have every single step he took photographed. i've seen photos of him entering the stadium, leaving the stadium, in the dressing room (without shorts!), at home with his kids, driving around town, at restaurants, ad nauseum. if jordan wore these shooting shirts for at least a few years, then there has to be a photo out there of him in it. either it exists and we simply haven't found it or it doesn't exist. if it doesn't exist then, due to the fact that jordan was so heavily photographed during those days, i'd really have to wonder if he ever wore it.

anyway, i have to think GFC has this photo because if they didn't then how else would they have authenticated it? can someone ask them?

Yea, right. Grey flannel do a photo search for a jersey? Bet the thought never crossed their minds.

This is a good point. My understanding is these shooting shirts were "personal preference". Very Likely, Mikey didn't likey. Actor Kadeem Hardison used to collect gamers. He wore them on the show, "A Different World" (this was long before "throwbacks"). He got them from the players themselves. He wore a Jordan shooting shirt, like this one, on an episode. Maybe Jordan gave them away, instead of wearing them. I've always thought the Jordan jersey that Kadeem is wearing in "White Men Can't Jump" (with tags removed) was a game-worn, but I don't know for sure.

Yes, the "shoot-around" is different than the "pre-game warm-up" right before introductions.

I wonder what the process is for GFC to authenticate a pro hoops piece. Being the authenticator to the HOF, you'd think they would have access to far more photos and videos than most.

Some photographic backup would be nice when the item features some atypical traits.

There's a Julius Erving jersey in the GFC auction right now (lot 128)

http://www.greyflannelauctions.com/showdetail.cfm?Lot=128&Search=erving

It's got standard block lettering when all I can find is vertical arch lettering on Erving's Wilson 76ers jerseys. Here, a photo would be nice.

Reminds me of this one.

Someone needs to tell Lou that the Sixers didn't wear Sand-Knit in Erving's "next to last" season.

I don't even think these existed while Doc was still playing.

*sigh*

I knew this was a photoshop from a mile away. Nice job, but I distinctly remember Dwayne Wayne wearing the home white (no joke). I could sit and watch all episodes on DVD, but fortunately I have less important things to do.
