Is it me, or does the "N" on the front look more like an "H"?

Hello. If this jersey is from 1975, where is the Boston Bicentennial patch? I think the SAX wore this typr of patch in 1975.

my 75 has no patch or evidence of one. many have said they were removed to recycle to minor leagues. i have seen many photos from 75 without the patch. Jeff

Just to tidy up a couple of issues in this older discussion, contrary to what Mitchell & Ness believe, the 1976 Massachusetts Bicentential patch was worn by the Red Sox in 1976, NOT 1975. You can go to the HOF uniform website to confirm this.

Also, someone suggested that that the 'N' in BOSTON on the jersey in question looked like an 'H' and hence implied that the jersey might not be legitimate. In fact, this was what the font did look like between 1972 and 1978, once again, confirmable as well at the HOF uniform website. Of course, when this style of road jersey was re-introduced in 1990 they did start using an 'N' that looked like an 'N'.

FWIW, $299 for a well-worn example of a Red Sox World Series year jersey belonging to infamous 3rd base coach Don Zimmer (The Gerbil) seems like it was a pretty good deal to me.

Robert is correct. The bicentennial patch was worn by the 1976 Boston Red Sox. I have a 1975 Tim McCarver Away jersey. I was not planning on selling it but I am open to offers. McCarver was batting .381 when he was released by the Sox in late May to make room for the then injured Carlton Fisk. As Bill Lee once said, McCarver was probably the only .380 player ever to be released from a team...The jersey is nice, not a lot of game use as Tim only played in 12 games for the 1975 Sox.

Lotta misinformation here. Let me see if I can clear things up:

The Red Sox wore the Massachusetts Bicentennial patches in 1975, not '76, and only on the regular-season home jerseys.

(I learned this the hard way, after I let a patch-free '75 Cecil Cooper roadie go for pennies. Groan.)

OK, stand corrected about the year. However, I wonder whether every 1975 home jersey had the patch, as a look at the 1975 Topps team baseball card, as well as those of Yaz and Fisk, show home jerseys with no patch. I should also add that I have two very well-worn 1975 home jerseys that show no sign of ever having had a patch. Perhaps this patch was only worn part of the season?

Bob, I'd like to add to that statement. The Red Sox also wore the Massachusetts Bicentennial patch on their 1975 road jerseys. Check out the July 12, 1975 issue of "The Sporting News". It shows Fred Lynn wearing a jersey with the centennial patch clearly visable. Since "Boston" is across the breast of the jersey, I would assume that Lynn is wearing a road jersey.

If that issue is not readily available, check out eBay auction 8757928930.

The Sox wore them first for Opening Day at home because I have seen pix of Tony Conigliaro wearing his #25 jersey with the patch on the sleeve. The Sox did not wear the patch for the World Series, however. Not sure if the team wore the patches for the entire regular season, home and road, tho.
