Hey everyone

As part of our quest to learn from every facet of the hobby, I thought it would be a good idea to start to collect photos and information of some game issued or cut jerseys in case they end up popping up as game used later on.

There's nothing wrong with someone buying a game cut or game issued jersey- the problem comes when a patch is added, a number is changed, wear magically shows up, or an authenticator writes a letter saying a jersey used, not knowing it was once purchased as issued.

I'm by no means suggesting that the people who bought the issued jerseys in this thread will be ripping people off- it will just be good to know what's out there as issued.

I would suggest uploading the photos to this thread rather than just putting links to their current location. Ebay takes listings down after a certain point and we would lose the information.

Here's one I thought was interesting

Has anyone ever been told exactly why Ichiro is allowed to have his first name on the back nameplate of his jersey's? Nobody else is allowed to do this as the back should say Suzuki. It seems that MLB is setting a double standard here. I was told that it was done to placate the Japenese ownership of the Mariners as well as the Japense people in general in order to keep their interest high in both Ichiro and baseball here in the states in general.

Rudy,

On the Ensberg, this white alternate jersey and another 2006 Ensberg pinstripe were originally offered to me by Robert Weitzner, a seller recently questioned regarding MaxBats. He burned me on a game issued 2005 Clemens road that had a bogus tag and refused to take it back stating it was indeed game issued.
Thanks,

Again, it's important to note that that's nothing wrong with buying or selling game issued items. It's when it shows up elsewhere with an LOA saying it's game used when we have a problem.

kingjammy24
09-11-2007, 05:15 PM
other than seeing whether game-issued items later show up as game-used, i think another benefit to posting items here is to show their source. that is, if a seller says they "acquired it from a player/team source" and it's shown that they really just picked it up from ebay, i think that sort of information is valuable in making purchasing decisions. historic auctions, for example, once offered a david wright batting helmet that they purchased from kim stigall/ball park heroes. there was nothing wrong with the helmet. for some reason, historic felt the need to describe the helmet as "sourced from the Mets". everyone knows that provenance will add to the value of an item. hopefully, in posting items here, the real sources of certain items can be ascertained and it'll help curb all of the "acquired directly from the player/team!" nonsense.

I've been waiting for this one to re-appear with some new customization, since I sold it on ebay last year. I got $250 for it from a buyer named "bullpen21". Even though I doubled my money on it I regretted selling it to this guy because it became apparent pretty quickly that he's somewhat adept with a sewing machine as he subsequently posted a couple of homemade 1994 Bears TBTC jerseys that he still can't seem to GIVE away.
The jersey I sold him will be easy to spot, considering the missing Nike "swooshes" from the shoulders.
Click the pics to enlarge.

this is a great topic, but would require a ton of MB if it is intended to be used as a database...

unfortunately there are dealers out there, who are mentioned in this thread, that will continue to sell these jerseys...they know full well that they will be thrown into some auction or on ebay as game used...but they are off the hook because of how they list them on e-bay...talk about circumventing the system

it would be nice if sand knit still supplied the NBA...sure there would still be trash out there, but nothing like what happenned in 1992 and since then

The 76ers switched to Sand-Knit for the 1986-87 season - Erving's last. From 1976-77 thru 1985-86, Erving wore Wilson Sixers jerseys.

I'm guessing someone got their hands on a blank Sixers team jersey and customized it. The size is too big for an Erving gamer and they put the wrong style numbers on it :)

I posted it on another thread...that guy had a number of Sand-Knit hoops jerseys. Some looked to be team issued and some were the retail authentics.

Once again, I'm really glad that I stumbled upon this place as I in just a few weeks have learned mucho information and this thread is just another tool to work from when buying.

As I've stated before, I collected GU items back in the late 80's and through the mid 90's and was able to source my stuff directly the Dodgers, Angels and a few other sources.

I recently got back into it that last couple of years as I've been going to about 30 to 40 games a year and have rekindled the flame and have again found some sources to get the goods.

Nevertheless, I have dipped into the ebay pool and each and every thing I have acquired via that media has been kosher/jake... but that's only because I only am collecting LA Dodgers Items and have a good basis of what is what with them.

However, if I ever decide to step outside of that realm, I know that the knowledge I have gleaned here will save me from giving my $$$ away on fakes and misrepresented goods.

The Wash Tag "Fake" Code is definitely a great tool to be armed with.

However, on the down side, the scammers do read this stuff and will adjust their tools of the trade.

Just an idea:

What about a service that one could send the ebay, or another auction or direct listing for online vetting that would say it is probably correct or not and charge a nominal fee for the service....

This one I got before it got to be team issued. I got it at the Russell factory outlet the summer of 1984.
It is consistent in every way with a Dolphins game jersey of that era. I am almost 100% positive that Russell's retail jerseys were not this length, and the tagging is consistent with other Dolphin jerseys I have seen (i.e. a letter size and not an number size). Marino did not wear jerseys with stretch side panels during 1984. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
I still remember the day I bought this. They had a whole rack of Dolphin jerseys and some 49er jerseys too.

This one went for almost $700 a few days ago. Looks like a great piece, but unless I'm missing something, the part about it being a Bench helmet appears to be mostly conjecture based on a call from a Reds' museum employee. Hopefully it won't reappear with a numeral "5" markered into the padding or "Bench" dymo-taped to the back.

Here is the ebay description

"Up for auction ia a Green Bay Packers Paul Hornung Salesmans sample jersey. Originally acquired through an auction house in 1996 which was advertised in Sports Collectors Digest at the time. The auction house was North Shore auctions out of Chicago. The jersey is a Wilson size 46. The Dureen material is heavier than that of the Mitchell&Ness jerseys out there. The jersey itself is in mint condition. Never displayed. I have been told that the tagging is appropriate for the late sixties. But keep in mind that the Packers used Sand Knit/Medalist jersey's for their gamers through out the Sixties. I have sent pictures of the jersey to Wilson in efforts to find the true history behind this jersey but never received any answer back. Beautiful, unique display piece. Any questions or info. regarding this jersey please email." Thanks

Here's a game used batting helmet that cannot be attributed to anyone although the buyer spent over $150.00 on it. The helmet was purchased on ebay by molly86. I'm not saying molly86 will be doing something fraudulent with this helmet, but it sure would be easy to create a Guillen, Baines or Ventura helmet.

Albert Pujols autographed game bat bought for $592 by wearingitagain, the chronic faker formerly known as jadaddy05.

Coming soon to eBay ... a "game used" Pujols bat with a familiar signature, scorched barrel, and an amazing story about how this bat was obtained.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130160997827

On Oct-08-07 at 16:50:58 PDT, seller added the following information:
this bat was givin to me by albert himeself at his house in 2005 when nobody knew if he was going to play for the cardinals the next season. this bat is his original game bat but it never made it to the stadium from his house. seeing how i got it from him and not a dealer you could see why he wouldnt give me the papers saying its authintic. Unfortunitly it was in my house when it went up in flames and is one of 5 things that made it out. That is what the dark spots are that you see. i would try and clean it but i am afraid it might hurt it. Anyone that wants more pictures, thats fine, just send me your email address.

This jersey was not advertised as Game Issued or Used. Auction was ended early, hopefully for more than $13.00 However, the cynnical side of me warns to keep a "heads up" on this one. An easy alteration of turning number "9" upside down to number "6" and adding a vertical arch name-on-back could make this a high end item. Number 6 is Dr. J, number 9 was Lionel Hollins. I can't tell from the photos if a name was ever on back. I posted photos for prosperity's sake. Real Sixers jerseys from the late 70s and 80s were distributed by Pearson (this jersey has the correct Pearson and Wilson tags).

A few St. Paddy's Day Reds items.

Original ebay description (sold by strikehound) for the undershirts (unmarked at the time of sale):

Up for your consideration is a grouping of 15 Cincinnati Reds Game Worn Undershirts. These 15 undershirts were worn by players underneath their Baseball Jerseys. The undershirts are from the 1970s.....The Undershirts were made by Rawlings, all have neck tags in them. Sizes include (3) XL and (12) L. Some were washed more than others and show some fading.... If you own one of the scarce and rarely seen St. Patrick's Day Game Worn Jersey, these are a must to complete your uniform attire.

Green batting helmet offered by Mike Darwish:

This is a green Cincinnati Reds helmet that was very lightly used during the late 1970's when the Reds used green uniforms and helmets etc. on St. Patrick's Day from 1977 to 1984. It is an ABC helmet size 7 3/8 and does not have a player number on the helmet.

I believe this is incorrect.
His name is in fact Yao Ming. However, in China, as is in several if not all Asian countries, the last name is first and the first name is last. In China, he would be referred to as Ming Yao (his first name is last). His Chinese National jersey is printed in the same format as his NBA jersey. Essentially, his first name is on the back of his jersey because in Asian format, it appears where a last name normally would.

you should let the guy know. apparently he got it wrong in his autobiography "Yao: A Life in Two Worlds". an excerpt:

"My name is Yao Ming....Yao is my family name... My first name, Ming, means "light."..My last name, Yao, doesn't mean anything in itself. It's just a last name, like Jones."

the name on the Jordan jersey looks too high

The jersey is a pro-cut, no where is the jersey listed as game used or game issued. Pro-cut jerseys often had the name higher than the team issued jerseys. The seller even states he bought the jersey from Champion.

I had hundreds of pro-cut Michael Jordan jerseys in the 1990s, and no one doubted where the name on the back of the jersey was as most of the jerseys were autographed for Upper Deck Authenticated and sold as pro-cuts.

What is your concern about the location of the name again, now?

I do not know why this item is even listed in this topic - The topic was set up for "game issued" items, not pro-cut items which were often sold to the public.

i believe that you are correct in the fact that it is to placate the Japanese people. according to wikipedia- "It was during the 1994 season that he began to use his given name, "Ichiro" instead of his family name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_name), "Suzuki" on the back of his uniform. Suzuki is the second most common family name in Japan, and his manager introduced the idea as a publicity stunt to help create a new image for what had been a relatively weak team, as well as a way to distinguish their rising star. Initially, Ichiro disliked the practice and was embarrassed by it; "Ichiro" was a household name by the end of the season and he was flooded with endorsement offers." so basically the mlb has let him use ichiro instead of suzuki because it is most likely in the best interest of the league to not mess with a good thing.

A team issued Jim Kelly rookie jersey from 1986 was auctioned on eBay in September, 2009. The original owner obtained it in a charity auction many years ago, and I have included a photo of him wearing the shirt next to Jim Kelly. It is a very nice item, and is worth every bit of the $500 the new owner paid for it, but it was never worn in a game. Kelly was one of several Bills players who shortened his gamer sleeves in 1986 by cutting them up to the second stripe. I have a large amount of video and photos available, and have yet to see a photo or video of Kelly in 1986 wearing the full-length sleeves.

Just something to keep in mind if this awesome jersey loses part of its sleeves one day in the future.

There is no sizing sticker, but I believe the cap will fit 7 ¼. Has a leather sweatband. <u1></u1><o></o><u1></u1><o></o>
Like New! Rarely Worn!<o></o>

Game issued Marcus Allen jersey from last season that was on NFL auctions. Guess its not really game issued if its from this era. But it still has the tagging. Also some game issued Ahman Green shoes with the batman logo on the tongue. I should snap some more pics of these. The photos dont do justice.

LeBron James 2014 Opening Night Game Issued Jersey. The Cavs organization held a #CavsNavy twitter promo where they prized a retweeter an extra prepared Tip-Off gamer for each player. The LeBron James has serial number CCA01815. Hopefully this will not be passed off as 1st half worn one day.
