I have to admit I love the threads that show everyone's collection, game room, favorite item, or a new home made case. What do you think about a section of this forum dedicated to nothing but these types of threads?

Interesting that none of the jerseys pictured in this thread are in display cases. I have given thought to such an idea due to the fact that my jerseys are not worth a whole lot.

I once used display cases, but moved away from them for three reasons
1) They take up a lot of room
2) I like to rotate which jersey I have up a few times a year. Its easier to do it this way then have to swap them out of the displays.
3) The displays I do like don't fit behind the bats/racks.
I have always kept the jerseys in plastic like the ones that are pictured.
Cheers,
Ty

I have thought about display cases too, but I didn't like the following about them:
1. They jut out a good 4-6" from the wall, and since I have couches in my sports room, they either have to be very high or the couches need to be moved further away from the walls.
2. They are often not wide enough. If the jerseys measure 25" across the chest without taking into account any additional width for sleeves. As these cases are generally 24" across (on the outside only), the jerseys will need to be crammed to fit. If you take nearly a foot off of the jersey width, there are folds all over the place, and it just looks crappy to me.
3. They are way too expensive to justify. $150-175 for a single jersey case? Ridiculous.

I have been pondering this for a while now, and have concluded that framing was the best way I could display my jerseys. They are professionally mounted, matted, stretched, and can be custom cut to the size of the jersey. I worked with a professional framer on these, laid out the jersey exactly the way I wanted it to display, selected the color scheme of the mats, etc. Not only did the jersey display come out exactly the way I wanted, the entire job is a cheaper solution than the "jersey case."

As for the size... that would be the only drawback. In the end, I will not be able to display as many, but I'm all about quality over quantity. I have not yet mounted my frames because I want to paint the walls first, but they are ready to go up any day now. Here are a couple of photographs:

2. 1987 Bill Robinson Home White Pinstripe

Isn't framing more expensive than a shadow box???? You said a shadow box is too expensive so you frame.

I just bought 2 football displays from michaels today because the department was 40% off. I think the displays are garbage. Not big enough and the ball stand is made for a basketball.

From my experience, there is a cheap way to frame and a very expensive way.

The expensive way is to go into your local mall store / sports collectible store / etc. and ask them how much it is to frame the jersey. They give you a stupid price... then they take your money, pocket half of it, and then send it to a framer to do the work.

The cheap way is to locate a framer and inquire from within (local flea market, local poster shop, art store, etc.). Without paying the "premium" that only acts to line the pocket of the store owner, you will be fairly surprised just how inexpensive framing actually is.

If you think about it, the shadow box often contains more wood, more workmanship, in some cases a door, hinges, etc. It is a different beast altogether, and should command a premium. I think that they go over well in the hobby because they require no further work. All you need to do is open them up, put your jersey in, and close. You don't really need to know any other skills to use them. The down side is that they do not display items very nicely.

dcrules01,

That is a nice Mets collection. I'm not a Mets fan, but I have several Sid Fernandez jerseys. Which El Sid jersey is the one that is displayed?

Kind Regards,

Ron.

Here are some pics of part of my Craig Biggio game used bat collection. In this particular group, bats from 1989 to 2006 are represented.

I am always buying game used Biggio items and other Astros items. I guarantee to pay more than anyone else!

im pretty partial to this collection.

its getting tougher and tougher to find Lankford stuff. i missed out on a recent EBay auction because my damn CPU shot craps this weekend. i am kicking myself in the ass for that one. a forum memeber ended up with it and im certain hes a fan as well.

i dont have any 2004 bats. the only "new" RL items (#12) i have is a home cap.

sorry.

its amazing (at least it is to me). i have the worst luck with EBay.

most of my items come from Cardinals Care / team sponsored auctions or local and non-local dealers.

Don the Legend -

Actually I won the C271 that was up last week. I am a Laknford fan, but I collect all Cardinals outfielders from '83-now. Last week, I picked up an Eric Davis model that Ray used (based on knob # and barrell marks)...

I LOVE your collection. Great stuff. Especially the spikes, man what a great find.

Looking at your bats, I am almost 100% certain that the Rawlings model with the Blue tape was actually once part of my collection...I traded it a while back - if you want more info on where it originated from, email me. bigtruck260@centurytel.net

You are right though, there are not many of us that collect Ray - and those that do are hoarding their stuff. I guess I have 5 of his bats in my office...not quite your collection, but enough to make me proud. I have them in various displays with other guys (Edmonds, McGee, Jordan, Gant).

it amazes me that even though Ray was A pretty good player, and one of the best players on the team in the 90's, that many people in this city are reluctant to give him any credit.

that said anytime i see an item up for auction (whether it be EBay or locally) there is always good action for that item.

you must be correct in saying that collectors are hoarding items. there has to be a ton of his stuff out there, yet little is available.

i once followed a kid and his grandparents off the field after a "shirt of their backs" day (the kid won the scratch off and had the Lankford jersey). i walked with them and explained my interest and offered them (in $100 increments) up to $450 for it. they didnt bite and i was pretty bummed out.
