With my collecting interests focused on Portland Beavers and Philadelphia Phillies game worn knit jerseys from the 1970's/1980's, I've been waiting over 25 years for a game worn Portland Beavers 1981 Luis Tiant jersey. I'm aware of his only black road knit with N.O.B. in a private collection, however, the owner simply refuses to part with it.

I had the same interest in obtaining Willie Horton's 1981 Portland Beavers, and was able to secure all 3 shirts he wore (home white with N.O.B. road black with N.O.B. and alternate red). It took me over 20 years to add these to my collection, and I have no doubt I'll be able to add the Tiant in the near future.

some pretty interesting items so far. it's good to see that it seems a lot of people are playing the waiting game for years. for awhile it seemed like everyone around me was finding everything they wanted except me.
a few years ago, lelands auctioned off a garvey dodgers jersey and an early 60's uecker bat.
i notice most of the items in this thread are 15-30 yrs old. with the notable explosion in the supply of current pieces, i wonder if in 20 yrs collectors will have similar difficulties in finding things or if the huge supply of today will mean that it'll be easy to find most anything even in 20 yrs. there seem to be enough arod, manny and ortiz jerseys to easily last for the next 50 yrs.
howard: good story about those portland beavers pieces. i can't believe you finally got them after 25 yrs of waiting. you sound pretty confident you'll get the tiant pieces. i wish i shared your optimism for the pieces on my list. i have a hunch i'll never see a 1990 or 1991 olerud home gamer. but who knows.. maybe i'll be lucky enough to post my own "after 25 yrs of waiting, i finally got it!" story. i'd only be 57 yrs old too. :rolleyes:

One item that I knew would surface at some point, did actually surface on eBay approx. 6-7 years ago. Another 'streak' related to Cal Ripken Jr. that gets little attention was that from 1982-87, he played in 8,243 consecutive innings (a Major League record). In September of '87 in the 8th inning of a game in Toronto (they were losing 18-3), Cal Ripken Sr. pulled Jr. out in the bottom of the inning & replaced him with Ron Washington (the current Rangers manager) thus ending this streak. I was always looking for that '87 road Ron Washington Orioles top to add to my collection and was fortunate to find it on eBay (perhaps it was only significant to me) for less than $100.

Great Thread!! I am trying to collect a bat from every player who played for the Red Sox since 1960 and I need 21 to complete the collection. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on the way you look at it) a few years before I started this quest in ernest, but while I was collecting Red Sox bats haphazardly, an Outfit called Centerfield auctioned off the Paul Hill collection and a number of the bats I need in the auction. So they are out there somewhere. My grail bats are Willie Tasby, Ken Poulsen, Carmen Fanzone, Roman Mejias, Felix Mantilla, George Smith, Luis Alvarado, Syd O'Brien and Bobby Heise. Household names for sure!

I have 27 of the 28 jerseys that the Toronto Blue Jays have worn in a regular season game.

I've always wanted to track down the 2001 Negro League tribute jersey they wore July 15th at Shea Stadium (that of the Chatham All-Stars).

The Mets sold their entire set on mlb.com; the Jays did not. I found one on Lelands three months after it had sold.

Still check every day.

The Home White (89-96) is a Jimy Williams #3 from 1989
The Road Grey (89-96) is a Juan Guzman #49 from 1989.
The Alt Blue (94-96) is a Dick Schofield #22 from 1994.

The only other Negro League tribute jersey the Jays have worn was in 2002 vs. the Red Sox. I've managed to grab three of those, hoping to perhaps sweeten a future trade/sale for the 2001 missing "grail".

One of my interests is in collecting Baseball gear used in movies and television. I've managed to get ahold of a number of cool things over the years, like one of the "Pirates" jerseys and caps worn by Captain Hook's men in the ballgame scene in the movie 'Hook', a bat used in the filming of the classic X-Files episode 'The Unnatural' (it's an old A.J. Reach bat painted, for some reason, grey), Katy Sagal's softball jersey from the Married With Children episode of the same name, a uniform worn by Gena Davis in 'A League of Their Own', a jersey worn by Dean Cain in the short-lived series 'Clubhouse', etc.

Anyway, I'd dearly love to own the bat that Joachim Phoenix used to kill the alien in 'Signs'. That's one broken bat that I definitely would not be glueing back together. The closest I've been able to come so far is a full-sized, beautifully made bat that they gave out to crew members on the film, inscribed with the production company logo...but I would definitely love to get ahold of the real thing.

As always, I have to be different...

I guess about 10-20 years ago, Early Wynn sold off many of his game used win baseballs, each notated. I've bought 3 of the 4 I've seen, but that's all. Where did they all go??

Also, several years ago I let myself be outbid on a softball used by service teams from some Pacific Island in WWII. What was cool was someone had painted a hula girl on one panel. Why? I don't know, but as a WWII/BB buff and true lover of hula girls, I still kick myself that I let it go, and I haven't seen it since.

I would like to find a 1975 California Angels road gray knit Rawlings game used jersey with 1975 flag tag of any player or coach. Also, I would like to find a Tom Egan California Angels knit or flannel game used jersey. Finally, a game used bat of former Angels catcher Randy Brown from 1969-1970.

Adam, the connection is pretty arbitrary.

I'm a huge Detroit Tigers fan, and he pitched for them in 1996.

He pitched on the Tigers for just a handful of games during the horrible 1996 campaign. I was sixteen, and hadn't gotten to witness much success up to that point, and they were difficult as heck to root for. When they plucked Van Poppel off of Waivers from Oakland, I was pumped, because he gave me a little glimpse of hope.

Although he didn't pan out here, I stuck with being a fan because he was one of those elements of hope that kept me being a Tigers fan through the many dark years.

Over time, he's become somewhat of a legend for me, and now my fiancee and five year-old, soon-to-be-step-son are huge fans of his, to the point that my step-son sometimes decides he's Todd Van Poppel when it's his turn to pitch to me. :)

I like to collect jerseys of certain current and past Detroit Tigers from other teams they were on, and Van Poppel is far and away the top of that list.

Garin told me after SBXX that George Luongo(First and longtime eqpt mgr) brought a girl into Champs Sports Bar in boston where he was guest bartending and had him sign his rookie helmet. Now, after all these years, I have never seen it or heard anyone talk of this helmet. I know it is out there and someone has had to have seen it. If anyone knows any information on this helmet, I would love to know more! Thanks for any info!
