View Full Version : 1976 Red Sox home jersey made by Wilson?

Offered on Ebay is a "1976 Bill Lee game worn Red Sox jersey manufactured by Wilson". Based on my understanding of Red Sox knits, Wilson first supplied knits to the Sox starting wih the 1979 season. 1976 shirts have the traditional McCauliffe tagging.

I concur, it would/should be McAuliffe and for 1976 you would also expect to see the Yawky Armband....

After pointing out the issues with this jersey, the seller has decided to halt the sale. He indicates,"Thank you for your email. I purchased this jersey 25 years ago at least from the Hartel brothers in the Midwest who advertised it as a Bill Lee jersey from 1976. It has been in my collection ever since. I have stopped the listing to research further. Thank you."

It's too bad that someone had to find out that something they had for so long wasn't as it was supposed to be. I agree though, that it's nice that the seller had an open mind about the input he/she received and ended or is going to end the listing as in this one, it sure appears not to be a Spaceman (Lee) 76 Jersey....unless he rehabbed in the minors that year?

No, it was tagged 76. Even if it was tagged 78, it would still be one year before Wilson got the contract to supply the Boston Red Sox with their uniforms/jerseys.

Howard was correct that it may very well be a Minor League Affiliate of the Red Sox....

i have a pair of red sox pants tagged 1976 made by wilson. i bought them a long time ago to outfit a team i was running, they came with a bunch load of 75 mcauliffe red sox pants. i kept a few 75 mcauliffes and the one wilson pants.

Most likely your Red Sox Wilson Pants from 76 are from the Minors....

no way were these pants in the minors... much too much tagging for the minors
