For Professional Model bats (pre 1976) the "etchings" on the knob are model #'s (i.e. M110, P72, O16, etc.). From 1976 present, these same model #'s can now be found on the bat barell. For non-professional bats, the knob etchings are the initials of the player who endorsed the bat and the number indicates the last digit of the length (i.e. MM3 would be a Mickey Mantle bat 33" in length).

Anyone else have any clue asking on a few bats I have seen from 2007. There is just a letter etched into the knob.

A 2007 bat with anything etched into the knob is either a replica/show bat or a retail bat.

I'm speaking specifically about Louisville Sluggers -- I believe that's the brand in question.

We have been doing some testing of different things this past season. So you might see a "M", "T", or "S" stamped into the knobs. Those bats were given to players to use and evaluate.

Retail or souvenir bats will have a number on the knob. Test bats generally have a letter. Hopefully we can confuse people a little more

BMH, can you tell us more? What do the "M,", "T" and "S" stand for? Do they represent different kinds of woods or treatments? Were these "test" bats approved for MLB use, or were they intended strictly for non-game use? What if a bat has an "R" stamped into it?

The "S" stamping is kind of troubling -- it has been used in the past to identify souvenir bats.

It involves different manufacturing techniques, that's about all I can say. I also forgot to add an "E" to that mix.

                        The "R" stands for Rejects.

This is good to know. I remember seeing a Francoeur offered a few months ago that had a letter in the knob, an M if I remember right, and it had perfect player charactistics and good use. This expains it.
