I am new to the forum and am wondering about the various themes that people have for their collections. I did a search for "theme" in the titles to posts in this section, so at the risk of being repetitive, what distinct, narrow theme do you have for your collection?

My goal is to get a game-used bat, jersey or other piece of equipment from every player to appear in at least one game for the Reds in my lifetime (I was born in 1966). I am typically willing to substitute an autographed non-game worn item while the search continues for the oft-elusive game-worn piece.

I collect things from Legendary Teams (1934 Cardinals) and items that start from when I became a Cardinals fan. I moved to STL in 1983, and I am trying to collect my favorite players from that era until now. My favorites were not always superstars. I played outfield in little leauge, and my heroes patrolled the turf at Busch Stadium.

I collect players with the same birthday as myself. It takes a little "digging" to find out who they are, but that in it self is lots of fun as well.

My team is the Arizona Diamondbacks, so I'm somewhat fortunate in terms of only have a ten-year history to deal with. Jerseys, bats, etc, from the team's first year ('98) are still fairly obtainable.

The (relatively speaking) older stuff in my collection falls into one of two categories: either gear of former or current DBacks players from other teams they've played on (like the '81 Mike Morgan Yankees jersey - which is both the oldest Major League jersey I own, and the only Yankees item so far permitted in the collection :D ), or older Baseball stuff that's just too neat to pass up - like the old silver Baseball trophy from Australia that I picked up awhile back - despite having no Diamondbacks connection.

Bats are my first and greatest collecting love, and I try, as much as possible, to get ahold of every different bat, insofar as make and model number, used by a player, for every year they're with the team.

If you go to www.baseballreference.com (http://www.baseballreference.com) and find the "frivolities" tab along the left margin, you'll be able to get an entire list of all players born on whatever date you choose.....

Thank God I didn't take that route. Roger Clemens was born the same day as me...:o

I collect items from guys who went to UVa, with an emphasis on the ones who went on to play in the NFL.

I decided to go the route I went as when I started to collect GU items Adrian Cardenas was starting to be in the spotlight. After reading about him, I decided he would be a player that I follow throughout his minor league career (and Major League, assuming he gets there). That's really my theme. Just mainly around the one player and replica bats of all-time greats.

I collect only Washington Nationals game used memorabilia. There is not a lot of good authentic items out there, which makes it even more fun and interesting. It is however, a very expensive hobby.

I once decided I would collect bats from players who I saw hit home runs while I was performing my husbandly duties. But that part of the hobby has really slowed to a crawl in recent years.

I collect game used bats from the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers. This is the only year the Brewers made it to the World Series. I also collect game used bats of the Milwaukee Braves.

Not to mention that it's a real good way to get kicked out of the ballpark.

Not all that bizarre - it seems that in the summer time, every time I stop on a game (any game when the Cards are not playing) I am usually lucky enough to catch Andruw Jones or Aramis Ramirez or Prince Fielder go yard. If I started something like that (oh boy)...I would be working double OT with the wife.

Sure you are kidding, but not a bad idea if I had the $$$

I have a tattoo of a baseball/bat combo. with the 4 numbers of my favorite players through my lifespan thus far.
4 = Lou Gehrig - the player I wanted to see, but never did
10 = Larry Bowa - my favorite player as a kid in the 1970's
23 = Don Mattingly - my favorite player as a teenager
5 = Nomar Garciaparra - my favorite player now

I'm trying to get a bat from each player. The Gehrig is out of my price range. But, I just picked up a nice store model from the 1940's - can't wait to get it. I have the Bowa (a bat from the mid-70's). I am on the hunt for a Mattingly (have the money, but no one is selling). After the Mattingly, I'll pick up a Nomar (preferably from his Red Sox years). I just got into this hobby and, although expensive, it reminds me of being a kid again.

Hi and welcome to the forum! My collecting focuses are the following:

1962-1971 Current Houston Colt .45s/Astros GU Flannels (All Original)
1962-Current Houston Colt .45s/Astros GU Bats
Craig Biggio GU Items (1988-2007)
Jeff Bagwell GU Items (1991-2005)I too once had the goal of collecting a bat from every member of the Houston Colt .45s and Astros from 1962. I am at over 400, but still have a way to go! I have also been collecting for 20 years now, and working toward the one of every player since 1999.

Thanks,

Maybe you should make a collection of players who use Viagra. you would have Rafael Palmero in your collection.

Well the spot light of my collection is anything

Game Used by Darryl Strawberry being that he was my favorite player of the 80's and 90's.

Jorge Posada anything Game Used - my favorite player of the Yankees

Next comes up Yankees Game Used items I like things that are rare

Such as Yankees Pitchers bats those are rare
Right now I have
Pettitte
Tom Gordon
Jon Leiber only bat he ever used with the Yankees
and a few others
2000 World Series relief pitchers bat

I like 70's and early 80's Yankees Game Used Jerseys
I have about 8 Jerseys from 1978 and about 10 from the early 80's

I will also collect other players that I like from the Yankees and jerseys from other teams if the player I liked was connected to the Yankees.
Example Ruben Sierra - Texas Rangers Jersey

Also items I have a connection with such as going to that game or meeting that player and I liked him.

I met with Scott Spezio,Weaver and the late Hancock a while back and it was the night of one of the last playoff games that the Cardinals lost to the Mets and Weaver asked me on the early edition of the Daily News can he write his name over Jose Valentin's face who was on the cover I said "sure go right ahead"

After that I bought the Jersey Jose Valentin wore in that game and im going to frame both together (Newspaper and Jersey)

Hi, I am trying to get a MLB game used jersey from all of the teams. I know this can be expensive and certain teams cost more than others, but I am at 12 teams so far.

Also, I have started to look into obtaining some players game worn jerseys that have potential of making the HOF someday (my first and only to this point is Todd Helton).

I have bought jerseys from minor league teams (I have a lot of Scranton/Wilkes Barre Red Barons, along with some others.)

I will pick up some game used bats as well, but I prefer jerseys. Also, I would buy Steelers game used jerseys if I could ever find any.

I have a few different things going on...

1. 1987 Mets game used road jerseys and road BP jerseys (anything that bears the one-year script 'New York' across the chest). I have 18 of these.

2. 1986 Mets single signed inscribed MLB balls (I have 23 now. A little more than half way there.

3. 1986 Mets signatures on a 2006 TBC gamer. I have 32 now but still missing a couple of key ones such as Rick Aguilera, Lee Mazzilli and Rafael Santana.

4. One of every Mets style jersey from 1978 to present. Getting close here, but I have cheated too. Where most of the collection is game used or game issued, I have used retail authentics to fill in some of the gaps. I am however missing a couple, which include the 1983 alternate blue road jersey (I don't count the M&N Tom Seaver as an adequate replacement because it is wrong) and the 1994 road BP.

5. Smaller collection of bats used by members of the 1986 Mets (but not necessarily used during the championship year): Includes Gary Carter, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Lenny Dykstra, Tim Teufel & Ray Knight.

6. Smaller collection of Mets "nickname" bats: IZZY (Jason Isringhausen), PULSE (Bill Pulsipher), HOT ROD (Todd Hundley), FONZIE (Edgardo Alfonzo).

7. Smaller collections of game used jerseys from specific players:
Bill Robinson: 1 jersey from 1978, 1979, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989.
John Olerud: 2 1999 jerseys, 1 2000 jersey; game used pants from 1999; game used bat from 1993.

If anyone has anything that will fit nicely into any of the above, please feel free to email me at TNT_Toys@yahoo.com.

I've decided to collect GU of my three favorite Running Backs...

Roger Craig
Terrell Davis
Clinton Portis

I was all over the place when I first started, but I realized that if I buy random fairly unexpensive stuff I will never be able to afford the big stuff of the players I really like. I kind of jacked up my collection because I had Portis GU cleats and gloves that I sold to buy something that I eventually sold. One of my biggest hobby regrets so far...

I've also decided to try and pick up jerseys of guys who went to one of my schools or I went to school with. This includes the following

Yo Murphy -
NFL: Bucs Rams Vikings Chiefs
CFL: Roughriders BC Lions Renegades
NFLE: Claymores
XFL: Las Vegas Outlaws

By the way, Yo Murphy is the only football player to play in the CFL, NFL, XFL and NFL Europe league.

Greg Biekert - Raiders and Vikings

Heath Irwin - Patriots Dolphins Rams

I agree with the previous post whole heartedly. After I sold all of my cards (almost all of them anyway), I went into collecting everyone - Mays, Mantle, Aaron to Pujols, Bonds, A-Rod and Jeter. When I realized that my room looked cool, but terribly sporadic, I decided to get rid of everything that did not inlclude a "bird on bat" motif.

It has worked out well...instead of trying to find a decent Goose Goslin, Ty Cobb, etc. I can concentrate on finding quality items of my players...might be expensive, but not nearly as pricey as the way I began.

My game used collection is even more concentrated - and I love it. You need to have a scope, a focus - unless you are Barry Halper, and can afford everything under the sun (and have a nice place to showcase it)...

I focused in on game used bats of HOFers from the '80s & '90s since these were the players I grew up watching.

So far I've got:
Gwynn (2)
Puckett
Molitor
Murray
Winfield
O. Smith
R. Henderson

Potential HOFers
F. Thomas
A-Rod
F. McGriff
Thome
Sheffield (2 rookies)
Canseco- rookie- not gonna make the hall but still a nice bat
T. Hoffman- Pads fan had to pick it up

I'd ultimately like to add: Yount, Boggs, Sandberg, Ripken, Brett, Griffey, mattingly

My collection is all Florida Gators. I collect game used UF jerseys and also pro jerseys of former Gators in the NFL, MLB, and NBA.

I am also attempting to collect autographs of every former Gator to play in the three major pro sports leagues. I'm only 3 short in baseball but they're all deceased. I was down to one in basketball before Noah, Horford, Brewer, Green, and Richard all got drafted this year. Still about 40 to go for the NFL but I have around 170!
