Grey Flannel - Bob Boone jersey

"1976 Bob Boone California Angels Game-Used Road Jersey"

The Hobby's premier auction site for game-worn jerseys, graded cards, championship rings, and Hall of Fame autographs.

wow. hmm. in 1976, boone was playing for the phillies. he played for them from 1972-81. in 1982, he began playing for the angels.

in 1976, #8 for the angels was some guy named andy etchebarren.

let's see what else.. the style of the GFC jersey wasn't even worn until 1979.

wait, it gets worse.. by the time boone arrived in california in 1982, the angels were wearing NOBs on their road jerseys. this one is lacking a NOB. the angels wore NOBs on their road jerseys from the year boone arrived until the year he left in 1988.

wrong year, wrong player, wrong style.

i date this jersey from 1979-81. in 79, #8 was merv rettenmund. in 1980, #8 was dave skaggs. in 1981, #8 was fred lynn.

    Rudy-

Unless I'm missing something, the description makes no mention of any type of tagging. The other Angels road jersey in the auction not only notes it, it also has a close-up photo of the actual tag.

        howard,

you're correct re: the tagging so i'm unsure how they came to deciding it was a 1976 boone jersey. however, even without any tagging, the entire description makes no sense. boone didn't play for the angels in '76, #8 on the angels in '76 wasn't boone, and the jersey style isn't even from '76.

        mark,

of course. i'm not overly optimistic though given russek's stated policy of feeling he's only required to answer questions from registered bidders. i'm not a registered bidder.

          Rudy,

The least they (or any Seller) should do is say "thank you" for the information. If they won't say it I will - thanks for posting the information on this jersey and the Carew jersey as it is most helpful.

Re: Grey Flannel - Bob Boone jersey

I have several customers seeking Boone equipment (from both the Phillies and Angels) and sent an email to the folks at Grey Flannel asking them specifically how this can be attributed to Boone in 1976? Boone was with the Phillies in 1976 and several years before and after 1976.

As of this posting, I have not received a response from Grey Flannel and the description remains unchanged on their auction site. As such, can anyone possibly provide insight to how this shirt can be offered as a 1976 Boone gamer?

Re: Grey Flannel - Bob Boone jersey

It's now been one week since I contacted the folks at Grey Flannel about the concerns with this jersey. As of today, it is still an active lot and the description clearly indicates it is a Bob Boone gamer from 1976.

What are the chances that there is another person named "BOB BOONE" who also played for the Angels and also wore the same number 8 as the "Bob Boone" who played for both the Phillies and later the Angels? If indeed there is/was a Bob Boone who played for the Angels in 1976, I can't seem to locate this information or any reference.

              Any insight here is appreciated.

                hey howard,

not sure what's more surprising..that GFC hasn't bothered to do anything or that it actually has a bid on it.

my guess is it'll wind up as a "1981 fred lynn" in its next life. at least that's more accurate than a "1976 bob boone".

My guess is that they meant to say "1986" as the year. It appears to be dead-on for that era and Boone was indeed playing for the Angels at that time.

commando: the GFC jersey has the "state of CA" patch. this particular patch was last worn in 1985. in 1986, they changed to a disc patch.

as well, from 1992 and on, the angels wore names on the backs of their road jerseys. the GFC jersey is missing a name. it's not a 1986 shirt.

                    1979-81.

                        Rudy-

The item description has not been changed, and I have searched for several days, trying to locate a player with the name BOONE who played for the Angels in 1976. As of today, I find no evidence that a BOONE or BOB BOONE played for them in 1976.

Any idea who Bob Boone is that played for the Angels in 1976? If you locate any info. please forward to me at my email address below.

                        Thanks.

Not that it makes much of a difference but just educating to the name mentioned earlier in this post.

Andy Etchebarren - was a solid catcher for the Orioles for many years in the 60's and 2 time all star.
I had the pleasure of meeting him many times, for the past 3 years he was the Manager for the Aberdeen Ironbirds - Minor League Affiliate of the Orioles.
Also his claim to fame - he was the last batter against Sandy Koufax

Per the Grey Flannel web site, this item remained "live" throughout the auction duration and closed at $150.

Across the front of the jersey is the team name "ANGELS." The player number "8" appears both on the front and back. All lettering and numbering is done in red on navy blue tackle twill. The State of California logo patch is embroidered on the left sleeve. The jersey shows game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind.

                            Reserve Price: $150

                            Current Bid: $150

The description also remained unchanged, and listed as a 1976 Bob Boone game worn jersey.

Emails with my concerns were sent to Grey Flannel, however, were not answered. Likewise, no information was ever posted on this site or sent to my personal email indicating that catcher Bob Boone or any player named Bob Boone played for the Angels in 1976, or could have possibly worn this with the Angels in 1976.

Should anyone have any information that may support the description, and listing, I'd appreciate knowing as I have several customers seeking Bob Boone (who played for the Angels and Phillies) jerseys, and I suspect this may resurface at a later date in the hobby.
