NEW YORK -- A can of bug spray used in the Yankees (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=nyy)' dugout when those tiny midges swarmed Cleveland's Jacobs Field during the American League playoffs fetched $673 online.
The pest repellant was up for bid in a Major League Baseball auction of memorabilia from the 2007 postseason.
Distracted by the bugs -- called midges -- crawling all over his neck and face, New York reliever Joba Chamberlain (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=8084) threw two wild pitches in Game 2 of the division series. That allowed the Indians (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=cle) to score the tying run in the eighth inning.
The Yankees lost 2-1 in 11 innings and fell behind 2-0 in the best-of-five series, which they lost in four games.

what's worse.. $673 for a can of bug spray or $20k for joba chamberlain's "bug" jersey?:

$20k for the jersey of a guy who's got a total of 24 career innings under his belt so far. to put it in perspective, andy pettitte's 1999 world series gamer, with steiner certs, went for $1980 in the last GFC auction. mariano rivera's 2006 gamer, with steiner certs, went for $2310. i believe clemens gamers on steiner's site were going for $15-20k. apparently they're pricing chamberlain as if he's already won 300 games.

i realize the jersey is from the "bug game" but i can't figure out what about that game warrants any more than an additional $20 premium. the yankees lost the series and the most notable part of this whole thing is that there were a swarm of bugs. i've witnessed hundreds of major league "bug games". i never thought there was anything remotely special about them. apparently i'm wrong. i'm going to look at game tapes to see if any of my jerseys were used in games where there were bugs. here's hoping i see a swarm of midges because apparently it'll put at least another $10k in my pocket!

Just remember, in any auction format, to make something sell for WAY more than it should, it only takes two potential buyers with one or more of the following traits: deep pockets - high desire - little sense.

If there's such a thing as a "historic novelty item," this can of bug spray would be one. It can be traced to a specific time and place, and plays a significant role in the events of that time and place. The buyer of this spray will always be able to show a tape of the game and point it out to his pals. Of course, as time goes on, fewer and fewer people will really care about it.
