Hi -

Found a local seller with the following jersey. Anyone have any opinions? They want $425 OBO - not sure if that's a good price, as I've never looke dat NFL GU jersey's before. Any help with a photomatch? Looks like from the tag might be early 1999 - I did a quick scan on Getty and it look slike Puma patch was only on jerseys earlier in the season.

Feel free to e-mail me with your thoughts. joel.bradley@comcast.net

Thanks,
Joel

I am farrrrrrrrrr from an expert but ALL the game used NFL jerseys I have have a tag sewn right below the next sporting the year and size "07-50" of the jersey. This doesn't appear too, which is a red flag to me. BUT there are several other very knowledgable people on here who will clarify I am sure. Heres a pic of what I mean...............

Im by no means an expert either but my issue with it is different. These were starter jerseys that had the PUMA patch sewn over the starter patch on the shoulders. All of the jerseys I have see with this patch sewn on also have the CM memorial patch on the left chest which this jersey does not have. See gettys image (493576). There also does not appear to be to much wear on the jersey, but the pics arent great either. The old turf from that time at the metrodome would surely cause more damage to a jersey than this. All this being said is just my opinion and I will defer all football questions to RKGIBSON. He is the expert on football jerseys but I will make him aware of this question and see how he feels about my opinion.

I have a brian dawkins 99 puma jersey. Inside the collar is the tagging 99-48. All the gamers I have seen as well have the tagging inside the collar.....

My point exactly. I think I stay away from it if I were you. Appears to be an authentic and not even a game issued let alone game used.

BISON and cugolfnut,

Not all jerseys from that era had the strip tagging in the neck. Even as late as 2001, there were teams that did not have strip tags in the neck. Some examples that quickly come to mind of teams from the late-1990s that did not have neck strip tagging include Washington and Tampa Bay (Adidas), and San Diego and Baltimore (Starter). I'm sure other collectors can list more.

Don't let the lack of neck strip tags discourage you. Otherwise, you could be missing out on some nice additions to your collections. The key is to know which teams did and which teams did not have neck strip tags prior to 2002. (Reebok became the official supplier in 2002 and the neck strip tagging became pretty much standard at that time.)

Also keep in mind that prior to the mid-1990s, few teams utilized neck strip tags, and without researching further, I cannot think of any team using strip tags in the neck during the 1970s and 1980s. Most teams did not even use any type of year tagging in the tail except for a very few exceptions such as Atlanta (year tags since the mid-1970s, but not found in every Falcons jersey).

Please note that this posting is in response to both of your posts about neck strip tags and not intended as a comment in any form or fashion about the Carter jersey in question.

Anyone with any other opinions? I haven't heard from RKGIBSON.
