Anyone ever seen a player sand a bat down?

I have a Canseco game used SAM bat that looks like it has been lightly sanded down or scuffed up. It is signed by Canseco as a gamer and I can tell by the pine tar and barrel marks that it was sanded before it was used by him. Just wondering if anyone has seen this before on a bat or what benefit it would have.

I don't know why players do it, but I do know that some do shave the handles. Andruw Jones used to do it a lot

I have several Canseco gamers that have a shaved handle and also have seen several photos of him doing this. On this bat, however, the entire bat is lightly scuffed with sandpaper. I can understand doing the handle for grip, but why the barrel also? It wasn't even enough to remove the name on the barrel.
