Just picked up this very primitive chest protector. Any thoughts to age on this one?

Rob, that is an extremely early primitive chest protector. Impossible to date, but definately 1800s. You have made quite a find. In my oppinion, that is Smithsonian material.

Rob- This one is anyone's guess. I was watching that auction on ebay. It has that great 19th century look to it, but hard to tell since its homemade. I love the leather belt that is attached to fasten protector around the waste, and the overall straps tied around the neck. If I recall the protector is on the small side, so my guess would be that some dad made this for his son around the TOC. Nice pick up.

I have an old composite team photo from 1910 that shows a chest protector that is somewhat similar to yours....I could not get the best photo of it because it's framed, but thought you might like to look at it.

This thing finally arrived!! I hate when things are sent parcel post:mad: Anyways, it looks like it is filled with horsehair. It is pretty darn heavy. The size would actually be allright for a large kid or small adult. The only thing it doesn't cover is the area that probably matters most (looks like they figured out by 1910 as shown in Dan's picture):D .

Hey everybody. This is up for sale on eBay. I will accept offers if the reserve is not met.

Take care,
