Hello forum members,
I know there are tons of sports fans and collector on the forum. Just wondering what everyone does to make a living besides selling sports memorabilia?? I work for Coca-Cola in Ohio.

Thanks,

Awesome. I spent a year at Wellesley College, which is very close to Natick. Right now, I am going to school at Reed College, a small liberal arts college in Portland, Oregon. I am a junior Linguistics major, who also enjoys Classical Studies and Anthropology. I eventually hope to become a public intellectual/college professor. I plan to work in the non-profit sector before becoming a professor, though.

Thanks for the invitation. I would love to go back to Boston, but I am currently on the West Coast. The airfare and hotel are just too expensive.

Yeah, when I was at Wellesley, I always used to go to Natick Mall and cross the street to eat at Minado's all-you-can-eat sushi. I hope to eventually move back there, but I found Wellesley's administration intolerable.

Shanghai & Tokyo's restaurant would deliver to my dorm, and I used to order from them about every weekend. And I love the snow. Just didn't like a college administration that was so overbearing.

Enjoy Boston! I love the cold weather and the adorable squirrel population!

I work as a liaison with the local courts for a non-profit agency that provides various drug-related services, including urinalysis and hair testing, counseling and evaluations. My formal training is as a paralegal.

I could never afford to indulge my collecting hobbies to the extent that I do, if at all, if it weren't for the extra paycheck I collect every month - my retirement pay from the Navy, with which I served on active duty for almost 21 years, almost all of it spent tracking submarines by acoustic analysis. (I was shocked, upon retirement, to find there was so little call for this kind of work in the civilian sector - particularly in Arizona.)

I worked for my father for most life started when I was 14 . My dad owned service/gas stations since 1951 then retired in 2004 .

I quit working for my dad in 2000 and went to Capital One .

It was a great place to work until Capital One figured out how much money they could save by outsourcing our jobs overseas ......I loved working there , it was a lot of fun .....

It was announced July 21 , 2004 they were laying off 1200 workers in Tampa, just 5 weeks after our little boy was born and the day after having jaw surgery .....

I have been a stay at home dad since .........funny how things work out sometimes.......

Most the time I would agree, it's a fun job. BUT, it does have it's downside. Like this morning, I get an email from Nomar's agent. He is requesting all his bats now be hand turned instead of produced on our CNC. His agent says Nomar can tell the difference between our HT and CNC bats. My problem with his request is we haven't hand turned the bats since the early 80's and Nomar has never used one.

Just retired from the Atlantic City Police Department after 25 years. In retrospect, I could not have asked for a better career. I met my wife and 19 years later, the marriage is still going strong.

As for retirement, thankfully we made some wise investments along the way and I am now able to stay home and search eBay for hidden treasures.

Every now and again, we head down to Key West. I hate it but I do it all for my wife. I hate fresh fish, Mojitos, cigars, sunshine and fresh air but for my wife, I'll suffer through it.

If there are any forum members thinking about public service, I would highly recommend it. I am 53 years old and not a whole lot of people can retire at that age with a very nice pension and 95% paid health benefits for my wife and I.

Hello oaklandasfan, I was the Tigers thirdbase coach about halfway thru the movie, as the player comes to third,I'm waving him home, then react to a great play and have to hold him up at third then kick the ground. Took about 2 days to film it. Then, in Hardball, when the kids come into the stadium to see Sammy Sosa, watch the batting-practice pitcher throw a pitch. It's me. Met Billy Crystal, Keanu Reeves, Barry Pepper, Anthony MichaelHall, and Thomas Jane. Great people to be around, not pretenteous at all. Pepper was in some great movies , also Anthony MichaelHall was the kid, Rusty, in Summer Vacation.

Never saw this thread before, guess I'll throw my 2 cents in. I am a Correctional Deputy for the Washington County Sheriff's Office in Washington County, Maryland. Great job with great benefits. Until the end of the year I do security part time on an Army base in Ft. Deitrick, Maryland. I do security for the USAMRIID(United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease). If anyone saw the movie "Outbreak" the opening part of the movie is supposed to be in that building. Although the building they used in the movie looks nothing like it on the inside or outside.

Yes, actually I do have some nice stuff that I have managed to amass over the years. If I get something signed it will usually be a cool poster from a tour or show in some far away land that I worked on. I enjoy that stuff and will likely hold onto it, but for me it is all about game used bats. The music autographs are a fringe benefit of my career for sure, but my collecting passion is baseball.

I was a college drop out at 19. I was a file clerk (until the company closed my office.) Then a customer service agent and did so well with my suave phone voice that they promoted me to catalog phone sales. I got cocky since I was pulling in twice what everyone else was and asked for a raise (Then they fired me) Tried door to door sales (until I found out it was a pyramid scheme) Became an account executive for a transportation company with Ford, Chrysler, GM and repo companies (Until I was fired for sleeping with my MILF boss ;)) Did customer service for an insurance company, became a Licensed P&C Broker, left for the money to do phone sales at GEICO and realized at age 24 that I hated my life, myself and every job I ever had. So I went back to college and became an Elementary School teacher just as the economy took a nose dive and the whole country instituted a hiring freeze meaning no new teachers are being offered jobs.

That whole paragraph to tell you.....I am a substitute teacher with dreams of getting a full time gig in an awesome school (like PS 33 in Queens or Lee Avenue in Hicksville, NY) :D

Don't know about most beautiful cities, but I was born in Portland and grew up outside of Seattle. Spent a year outside of Boston, and now am living my fifth and final year in Portland. Came back to Portland to attend Reed College, a small liberal arts college of about 1,350 students. If I had my choice, I would move back to Massachusetts, as I love the state.

What do I do for a living? Good question...

As my father once told me (and this quote comes from a great book, 'The Richest Man in Babylon'):

'Always remember that no matter what job you have - you are ALWAYS working for yourself.'

That said, for a living I am a Father, a Husband, a Son, a Brother, etc. and I support my family as Field Supervisor / Trainer for a Contract Cable Installer.

In my 'previous life', I have worked for some of the largest companies in the world - GE, Chase Manhattan (JP Morgan Chase), US West (Qwest), Nike, Rawlings and the DoD (12 years USAF/RES/ANG) as a Weapons Specialist on F-4s, f-16s and a Crew Chief on C-130s. I also attended Texas Tech (on and off for 3 years - '83, '85, '87) and the University of North Texas ('89-'91). I intend to go back and finish my degree - I have over 170 hours (well more than most degrees require) because I couldn't decide on a major.

I have also had some interesting 'side jobs' over the years - the Easter Bunny at a Mall, a 'Security' officer at Coors Field above the Bullpens in 1995, an extra in a few movies while growing up in Dallas (Including Oliver Stone's 'Born on the 4th of July' & 'JFK' - I got to meet both Tom Cruise and Gary Oldman - and I was chosen for a speaking part by Oliver Stone in 4th of July. It was never used, but I got directed by Oliver Stone for about 20 minutes!)

I am awaiting a settlement from an auto accident that happened last year and may go PT or even quit if I get enough to pay my bills off and go back to school at Johnson&Wales and pursue my Liberal Arts Degree and a Degree in Sports Management. The wife and I plan to move to AZ when the kid graduates in couple of years - great place to be to become an MLB Scout!

Sorry for the 'NOVEL'...

All the best -

Chris

Hi, I manage/Coach in Independent baseball. I've been in the Frontier League, Northern League, Central League, All-American Association, Managed in Caserta, Italy of their top division, am currently pitching coach of the Greek National team, was in the movies "61*", "Hardball", and "One in a Million, the Ron LeFlore story". I don't envy you what I assume is a certain lack of job security, and having to travel as much as I'm sure you've had to do...but aside from that, I do envy you your Baseball career. I'd love to read a book that you might write about your experiences.

A question I always ask players and coaches, is how much of your own stuff do you save/collect? I'm assuming at least a jersey and cap from each team?

So I thought it might be time for an 'update'...

The settlement wasn't as big as I had hoped - paid down a few bills and added a few items - and haven't yet gone back to school. Considering the 'on-line' route.

As of June this past year (2012) I am now the Director of Safety and Risk Management for the same cable contractor (for Comcast) that I have been with since 2005.

We have absorbed three more contractors since my 1st post on this thread (Jan 11, 2011) and now cover almost the entire state of Colorado. We are the second largest cable company in Colorado next to Comcast.

The wife and I still have dreams of relocating to Phoenix, AZ (year round baseball) and starting my own custom bat company ( I use to make bats - hand turned - PT for Rawlings at Coors Field).

Our son graduated High School last May (2012), so now we are more free to concentrate on what we want to do.
