FORT MYERS, Fla. — Johan Santana, in Fort Myers with the New York Mets to face the Boston Red Sox across town, stopped by the Twins' complex and warmly greeted his former manager, coaches and teammates. He had an ulterior motive, too.
Santana collected a couple of bats from his former catcher, Joe Mauer, figuring they'll come in handy this season.
"I've got to try to get some tips from him — I've got to hit now," said Santana, who always enjoyed batting during interleague games. Now that he's in the National League, he will hit for himself in most starts. "It's going to be tougher," said Santana, the two-time Cy Young winner who was traded for Carlos Gomez and three pitching prospects last month. "He's a batting champion, so I got a chance to get some hopefully good wood. Some good hits from him."
