Hey folks,
I just recieved a 2002 Nick Johnson Yankees home (#36) GU jersey directly from a Steiner auction. I noticed that on the left-hand sleeve (Johnson's left), there appears to be remenants of stitching all the way around the arm above the hem- looking exactly like what one would expect a spot where a black memorial band which was removed to look like. The tagging on the jersey is consistant with what others have posted about 02 Yankees (no date, but has size and extra length tags). So my questions is- how is it possible for this 2002 jersey to have ever had a memorial band? Could it have been recycled for use in 2003? I'll try to get photos at some point when I'm not at work. Thanks in advance!

can you post pics of the jersey?
who's the manufacturer?
i'm unsure why it would matter if it was recycled in 2003. i'm unaware of the yankees wearing a black armband in 2003. the only recent armband they wore that i'm aware of was in 2007 for lidle. prior to that one, they wore one in 2001 for the 9/11 victims.

it's probably a recycled Russell jersey from 2000, ......if it has the heavy duty side seam on the jersey,

......2001 - 2004 Russell jersey's did not have the heavy duty sewn side seam,..... 2005 they began wearing Majestic. Hope this helps.

the russell tag dates to 2001-2003.

2001 - post 9/11 they wore a black armband on the left sleeve, however they also covered up the MLB logo on the back with a US flag and wore the 100th Anniversary AL patch on their right sleeve.

2002 - no armband or patches.

2003 - they were using strip tags and wore the Yankees 100th Anniv. patch.

if it's a recycled 2001 jersey, then it could've been taken from pre-9/11 stock however it still ought to have an outline of the 100th Anniv. AL patch on the right sleeve. any outlines on the right sleeve?

in 2000, they used the "Y0" or "2000" strip tags. they also had a black armband in 2000 for bob lemon. funny thing is if you look at a lot of "2000" yankee shirts, with 2000 or Y0 tagging, from steiner, they have russell tags that were usually last seen in 1999.

Thanks so much for the input guys! I took 3 photos of the possible area where a memorial band was. Not the best photos, but its the best I can do for the time being:

I know the pics are tough, but doesn't that look like the reminants of a memorial band? Or maybe it's just a fluke-y symmetrical exterior piling?
Also, I don't see any evidence on the right sleeve of a patch ever being there...

CORRECTION

......it's a recycled Russell jersey from 2000 if there is only evidence of it missing a black armband, ...... 2000 - 2004 Russell jersey's did not have the heavy duty sewn side seam like 1999 and before as pre 2000 Russell jock tag would have Diamond Collection in it,....... 2005 they began wearing Majestic. Hope this helps.

I would ask Steiner how they know it's a 100% worn 2002 Nick Johnson jersey, who at Steiner made that call?

Thanks Larry. This was won from one of their auctions, and they are clear that "all sales are final", so I'm not sure how much help they would be if I started getting picky about this. I'm not really looking to return the jersey- I just would like to know the real history behind it. If it's not a Nick Johnson- then who else could it be from that era? Who else would have had #36? Theres no doubt the jersey was heavily worn by someone- as shown by the wear on the tagging. Also, if it was a recycled jersey from 2000, wouldn't there be a "Y0" or "2000" date tag on there?

Take a look at www.gettyimages.com

type in Nick Johnson 2002, check off editorial.

Looks like they wore a black armband for 2002, also notice the hats with Flag on it, ..........pics are dated September,........could signify it being 911, First Yr. Anniversary.

From what i can tell by the Steiner front pic of Johnson jersey you posted, the NY logo placement looks to match the Getty pic # 51674465 of the Sept.11,2002 Johnson jersey with Armband.

Larry- Wow! Now that is good detective work! The caption on the photo does say Sept 11 against the Orioles. Mystery solved and a photo match! Thank you once again!
