What Do You Guys Think About The 1981 Clete Boyer Oakland A's Coching Game Used Jersey On Ebay Right Now?friend Of Mine Thinks The Year Doesn't Match The 1981 Style Tags And He's Good.input Anyone?

The NOB is an odd-looking weight. The #s might be replacements as well, but that might be due to the angle at which the jersey is depicted.

The A's DID wear "OAKLAND" on their gold jerseys in '81, if that's the question.

The set tag reads 1981
The Rawlings label is from 1985(according to Kingjammy24)

Below is what an 1981 label should look like

as per swoboda's post, i don't much like the tagging.

it shows a tag that first came out around 1985 with a 1981 flag tag. (oakland wore this particular style from 1981-86). i can't tell if the tag has been cut and resewn but the sides of the tag look a little thin to me.

here are some jerseys:

1981 andre dawson showing a proper '73-84 tag:
http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/auction/2006/1061.html

1981 bill madlock showing a proper '73-84 tag:
http://www.americanmemorabilia.com/Auction_Item.asp?Auction_ID=22038

1981 len barker showing a proper '73-84 tag:
http://www.americanmemorabilia.com/Auction_Item.asp?Auction_ID=9334

even 2 1983 oakland a's gamers still showing the proper '73-84 tag:
http://www.mearsonline.com/forsale/item/?id=2236

http://www.americanmemorabilia.com/Auction_Item.asp?Auction_ID=36501

how is it that 2 1983 oakland gamers show older tags than this 1981 "gamer"?

a few more '81-84 jerseys showing proper '73-84 tags:

http://www.mearsonline.com/forsale/item/?id=4323

http://www.americanmemorabilia.com/Auction_Item.asp?Auction_ID=37900

http://www.americanmemorabilia.com/Auction_Item.asp?Auction_ID=38388

http://www.americanmemorabilia.com/Auction_Item.asp?Auction_ID=26931

http://www.americanmemorabilia.com/Auction_Item.asp?Auction_ID=6859

http://www.americanmemorabilia.com/Auction_Item.asp?Auction_ID=5714

http://www.americanmemorabilia.com/Auction_Item.asp?Auction_ID=9458

the nob font on the back strikes me as a little compressed, especially for such a short name. perhaps mark weimerskirch can comment more on that though.

come to think of it, i've never quite seen a rawlings tag like that. all of the '85-87 tags i've seen were 4 lines but "layout" of the washing instructions is completely different. the 4th line of the '85-87 tags i've seen reaches to the middle of the other 3 lines. on this tag, all 4 lines end at the same point. does anyone have any photos of the same style tag as is seen on the ebay jersey?

the always helpful lon lewis emailed me regarding this strange rawlings tag. according to lon "..the Rawlings tag in question dates from the 87-88 seasons."

here are a couple of images of the tag from a 1987 giants jersey and a 1988 giants jersey:

truly an oddity how such a tag ended up on a 1981 jersey.

Gentlemen,

I am admittedly a football jersey collector and only collect baseball jerseys of a few favorite players, but I thought that the drastically redesigned white "R" Rawlings tag was seen as early as 1996. Below is an example from a well-worn St. Louis Cardinals jersey with the white Rawlings "R" logo tagging.

Any comments or other examples of 1996 Rawlings baseball jerseys sporting the white Rawlings "R" tagging would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

mark

i have a request out:
http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=15382

here's a '96 ozzie smith:
http://www.americanmemorabilia.com/Auction_Item.asp?Auction_ID=31071

of course, i suppose it has to be taken with a grain of salt being that it's an ozzie smith jersey.

it's somewhat difficult because, as far as i can tell, the only teams to have worn rawlings jerseys in 1996 were the cards, giants, and pirates. i did find one example of 1996 giants tagging showing the same style of tag on your cards jersey. i'd like to see some 1996 cards, giants, and pirates gamers.

i have a theory about tagging changes and that is that these changes sometimes occur late in the season and so only very few, rare late season orders would show the new tagging whereas most orders would only see the new tagging in the following season when most of the new orders would be placed. when we talk about what years certain tags came out, it's obviously difficult to get a peek at gamers that were late season orders and know that they were indeed late season orders and not just forgeries or prototypes/samples. i wouldn't be surprised if the year that style of rawlings tag came out was indeed 1996 instead of 1997. i'd just like to see a few more gamers.

Only Bonds wore a Rawlings jersey for the Giants in 1996. Everyone else wore Russell.

Marichal,
I am working off of my old man's memory, but I was thinking that Dick Dobbins had told me that the ones in 1996 without the sleeve logos were Rawlings - Bonds, Shawon Dunston and a few others. I can't even remember with certainty if Sports Warehouse had taken over selling the Giants stuff at that point, but I thought that a few in the 1996 inventory were Rawlings other than Bonds. But I could be completely wrong and will trust the baseball experts on this issue.

Rudy,
My thought was similar to your's, except I figured that the new style was introduced in 1996 with the remaining "old stock" tagged jerseys being used as well. Again, being more of a football collector, I can relate that this happened with Russell football jerseys in 1983. Some collectors refer to it as a "transition" year since both styles of tags can be seen on jerseys made for use in that season. See the attached photos of two Atlanta Falcons jerseys year-tagged from 1983 as examples. (Also note that the 100% nylon flag tag was not included on the new-style red, white & blue tagging when it first came out.)

Perhaps the same happened with Rawlings in 1996. As always, thanks for your input and efforts.

I have a 1981 Wayne Gross gold A's jersey, identical to the Boyer jersey being discussed. The tagging is the same, although mine says "Set 1".
I thinks it's good.

I stand corrected, the washing instructions are identical to those on the 1973-1984 Rawlings jerseys. So my 1981 A'S Wayne Gross jersey is correct, however the Clete Boyer has different wording for 1981.
