Mike and Jim,

Thanks so much for offering a place for collectors to go when seeking bat record info. I'm curious about the Roger Maris bat records for 1961. I understand that he placed just one order for O16 bats, and that was at the end of March, 1961. How many bats were ordered and what were the lengths of those bats? Were they all 35 inches, or were some 36 inches long?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin --

Actually, h & B factory records document two orders of model )16 bats for Roger maris in 1961 as follows:

3/3/61 35 inches / 35 ounces 6 bats
3/31/61 35 inches / 33 ounces 6 bats

A few random notes -- Maris ordered Model O16 bats over 90 % of the time mid-1956 through October, 1960. He almost always ordered bats in 35 inch length throughout his career, with only a very small number of orders of 35 1/2 inch or 36 inch bats.

Jim is really the Yankee experet, and he may be able to add to this brief maris post.

Mike

Hi Kevin - as usual, Mike has nailed the answer for you. The only thing I would add is that the orders in 61 for O16 bats were for wide grain bats. I actually have an O16 from 1960. I always found it quite interesting that Maris broke the reocrd in 1961 after switching from the O16 and primarily using A92 bats in 1961. The O16 has a very thick handle and I can't imagine how he got around on the ball, even in 1960 and before with an O16. The A92 has a much thinner handle. All his orders in 1961 were for A92 model bats, except for the two orders that Mike mentioned. Hope that info helps. Maris bats are special pieces - to me, he still holds the all time single season home run record...........Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Jim

Suave1477 - I do not know of anyone currently offering a Maris game used bat for sale. Mike Specht or other collectors may know of one out there and I encourage anyone who can help to reply. I would continue to check the upcoming major auctions that you can link to on this site, as that's where they typically find there way to market. Every once in a while, you will see on on ebay - but that is a rare occurence. Maris bats are very collectible and popular with collectors - especially Yankees and vintage bat collectors. The price for Maris bats has escalated quite a bit over the last 10 years or so. About 10 years ago, you could find a really nice Maris from the late 50's or early 60's in the $2,500 - $3,500 range, depending upon the piece. Today, its hard to find one for less than $5,000 and typically they go much higher than that - I would say the average price these days is around $7,500 - $8,000 for a Maris bat with good use - and if its from 1961 - forget about it. You are well over $10,000 and closer to $15,000 - $20,000. I'll keep my eyes out for you. Thanks, Jim

Jim I truly appreciate your help!!!! I don't think at this time it would be wise for me to make that kind of an investment. I didn't realize they go that high, when it comes to the vintage stuff I am a bit naive. What I will do when I become a bit more financial well off to make that purchase I will come directly to you. You seem to be knowledgable on these matters and I feel comfortable working with you!!

Auction houses like Mastro and Lelands always get top dollar for high end bats, but if you want to sell outright, i would be interested. My email is Bub13@aol.com if you want to email any info. Good luck with your bat
