I'd like to find out how many P89L model bats Gary Carter ordered in his career. I own a P89L and it's the only one i've ever seen. Most are regular P89s.
That sounds like a very rare model Gary Carter bat you have.
In reviewing Carter's records from 4/25/73 to 9/14/92, it is clear that Model P89 was by far his model of choice throug the majority of his career. His first order of Model P89 was shipped on 6/22/74, however the model did not become his predominant model until 5/13/77. The last order was shipped on 8/3/92. The majority of the P89 orders had a Flame Tempered finish. Lengths were between 34 inches and 35 1/2 inches, with the majority being 35 inches. Weights were between 32 and 33 ounces. Most had rounded ends, however there were many cupped end (P89C) orders in the mid-to-late 1980's.
Now to your specific bat, David. H & B factory records for Gary Carter show only one order of Model P89L bats shipped to Gary Carter for professional use during his days with the New York Mets. That order was shipped on 8/16/85 and totaled 11 bats. The bats were 35 inches in length / 33 ounces in weight, and had a Flame Tempered finish. There is no documentation that indicates that any Gary Carter P89L bats were sent to any other destination (Baseball Miscellaneous, Baseball Promotions, etc.)
