View Full Version : Jim Rice bats

I recently bought two bats off of ebay that may be (but probably aren't) game used Jim Rice bats. The price I paid obviously gives a lot of evidence that they aren't anything but store model bats, but the seller said that he was moving and had to get rid of everything asap, plus he said he had another authentic Rice gamer that he sold a while back, so it's not unbelievable that one of these might be a legit gamer:

So can anyone confirm that they're store models? Even if they are, I liked the price, so it wouldn't be a loss, but the '14' on the knobs and the taping made me think there is a small chance at least one of them is a gamer. I ordered a copy of the Malta book but haven't received it yet, or else I'd just look them up myself.

Also, does someone have a list of common things to look for that will almost always differentiate a gamer from a store model? I've heard that an embossed length on the knob, or the player's initials after '125' on the lsv oval, are both give aways to a store model. Anything else?

Thanks for your guys' help!

The one with the White Sox stamped on it was on Ebay back in March. I had the link to it, but the auction is now invalid.

Yea, the 'white sox' being on there made me pretty suspicious about it. I'm wondering about the '14' on the knob, though. Think it's just a coincidence? Or done intentionally by someone else? Or maybe a minor leaguer wanted to imitate a Rice bat as closely as possible?

I guess no matter what, it's weird that a Jim Rice bat ended up with 'white sox' stamped on it and '14' on the knob...

Thanks. How easy is it to tell whether it was made for Rice or just ordered by someone else? Would Brian's records be the only for-sure way?
