    Frank Howard Jersey on ebay

    Wouldn't a 44 be a little small for Howard?

Additional info: no one else wore #9 for the Senators in 1968 except for Howard.

Q: Can you please tell me where you got the jersey? thanksAug-15-08A: Your question intrigues me. If I take it on its face, the insinuation is that, depending on where I got it, you might be able to conclude issues related to its authenticity. In other words, if it came from somebody's attic that would be more or less likely to be authentic than if it were, say, purchased on eBay and being resold. Since I cannot figure out how one could absolutely make such a determination from such a question... it actually invalidates the question, and therefore begs to be ignored. But I'll tell you what I know anyway. This jersey is being sold by me for a friend of mine. This person is very involved in collecting and collectables, especially in baseball memorabilia. A high school teacher and baseball coach for years, and one of the most honest people I know... I can only tell you that 100%, if he says so - it's authentic. He is just that kind of guy. He doesn't use computers, and he needed my help with this. Where he got it, I don't know... for all I know, Frank Howard gave it to him - and I have to decide how he might feel about me asking that question, and how our relationship might be affected. I'll get back to you, after I decide whether or not to ask him about it. The baseball cards, which are not worth much at all, came from me - I thought it would make a little addition to the package.
(Question is from the ebay auction reference to the Howard jersey)

Apparently the seller has not heard of provenance and its importance!

Frank Howard was 6'7" and weighed 255 lbs. He also tended to wear his jerseys a bit loose. Catfish Hunter wore a 44 and although it was from a different manufacturer, Catfish was nowhere near the size of Frank. Steve Deming has posted some great photos of Frank on his website www.thatsmyboy03.com showing Frank in a gray Senators jerseys. I would be hard pressed to believe Frank wore a 44. Frank probably wore a 46 maybe even a 48.

That reply alone is enought to make me avoid the auction. It was a very easy question, and the seller basically used a nasty, condescending tone...

It I take his reply at face value... , I'd say the odds are he doesn't have any friends - and the jersey is his. He bought it at a flea market thinking that he found gold, only to be questioned repeatedly by potential buyers about a major size discrepancy.

Interesting, his friend may be honest as can be but that doesn't mean he wasn't suckered by someone else.
But, if anyone was seriously interested in this jersey, I would just pick up the phone and call Hondo myself.
