Hello Everyone-

Please find below some information from Heritage Auctions regarding a Wilt Chamberlain game-worn jersey they will be auctioning in their upcoming May Signature auction.

In addition, I was curious to know what opinions forum members have of Heritage. When I was doing a lot of buying and selling I personally found Heritage to be exceptionally well-run and very professional. If I understand things correctly, Heritage has been a big player in the coin and stamps collectible fields for years and recently entered into the sports memorabilia auction circuit. Their press releases also have the statement "The World’s Fastest Growing Major Auctioneer" on the bottom which seems to substantiate their presence in other auction categories. Does anyone else have any perspective they can share regarding Heritage?

Here is the information about the Chamberlain jersey:

Wilt Chamberlain Game-Worn Jersey to be Offered at Auction!

DALLAS, TEXAS: He was a titan, the likes of which may never be seen again.

One of the most decorated, storied players in the history of basketball, Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain began his professional career with the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters, in 1958-59. He went on to play for the Philadelphia Warriors (1959-62), during which time he won the NBA MVP Award (1960). He also played for the San Francisco Warriors (1963-64), the Philadelphia 76ers (1964-68), and the Los Angeles Lakers (1968-73).

The 7’1” superstar was the first player in NBA history to be named both Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season, and Chamberlain would go on to set record after record during his impressive career.

“Chamberlain is, literally, one of the giants in the field of basketball,” said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Memorabilia Auctions for Heritage Auction Galleries. “His game-worn uniforms, like the one we’re offering in our upcoming auction, are the ultimate collectibles for many fans.”

“Just a year after shocking the world with a one hundred-point performance in Hershey, Wilt the Stilt suited up in this heroic gamer during the Warriors' first season in San Francisco,” Ivy said. “Though never duplicating his triple-digit feat of March 2, 1962, the legendary Hall of Fame center easily repeated as the league's scoring leader in 1962-63, netting an outrageous average of 44.8 points per game.”

“It's clear from the strong wear that characterizes this amazing jersey that hundred and hundreds of the more than 3,000 that Wilt scored this season came while wearing it,” Ivy said. “Other chart-topping stats compiled in this wardrobe: minutes played, field goals attempted, field goals made, field goal percentage, rebounds (total and per game) and points.”

“Yellow and blue tackle twill spelling ‘San Francisco 13’across the chest shows the puckering consistent with reaction to salty sweat,” Ivy said, “as does the number ‘13’ repeated on verso. The small ‘44’ size tag in the collar is all that remains of labeling, though it is well known that Wilt used to remove these tags for comfort. This home white jersey was acquired from Wilt personally by a ball boy for the team, and represents one of the finest jerseys from this early NBA legend ever offered for public sale.”

Heritage Auction Galleries will offer the 1962-63 Wilt Chamberlain game-worn jersey in their upcoming Signature auction, to be held May 6, 2006 at their headquarters in Dallas, TX.

Wilt Chamberlain’s 1962-63 game-worn jersey bears a pre-auction estimate of $15,000 - $20,000.
