Well, I made my quarterly trip to the local antique show that is held at the State Fair Grounds and there was much less baseball memorabilia than I am used to seeing -Which is never a lot, but for us guys here in the Great American Desert this is as close to Ft Washington that I am ever going to get. I always make a beeline for my favorite dealer who usually has 5-6 items related to baseball memorabilia, but he only had a pile of 4 prewar baseball gloves that he wanted $200 for the lot...really there was only one good glove in the lot was a very nice JC Higgins Catcher's mitt, but it didn't make the lot a $200 lot so I moved on to my second favorite dealer (These dealers always set up in the same spot every time) and I managed to snag a Harwood Pony League ball in immaculate condition with the original box for $16 which I thought was a good deal...also snagged another Kep Harding "Official League" ball from him for $2...I think Kep Harding was a local sporting goods store because when I googled it the only thing I come up with is Lincoln, Nebraska...and nothing on ebay.

After those two guys you really have to search for the baseball memorabilia so that means combing the aisles and checking all the display cases and asking lots of questions to dealers....I found one dealer who had pinbacks, but they were all too new for my tastes, but I didn't want to pass up the Crane's potato chip pins still in the original cellophane packages for a buck apiece so I grabbed all 8 of those...After searching a few more aisles I ran across another dealer who had no baseball memorabilia, but he did have a Jack Dempsey Flipbook that I'd never seen before and I thought was a bargain at $10 so grabbed that.

Started my way towards the back of the show without much luck and then ran into a lady with a 1949 Look Magazine with DiMaggio and his son on the cover and grabbed that for $10...while chatting with my brother over a photo at the same booth he noted a picture that had spelled Sioux City "SOO" and I told him that wasn't unusual and that was actually the nickname of the Sioux City Western league team -and the guy standing next to me said that he was the batboy for the Soos in the late 1950's..we chatted for a few minutes, but unfortunately he doesn't have any of the old memorabilia that he collected back then anymore...the lady who had the booth was listening to us and she asked me if I knew anything about old uniforms and she said she knows Richie Ashburn's niece who has 5 of his uniforms hanging on her walls at home....I told her what I thought they were worth and she said she's almost certain the niece has no clue...they found them not too long ago in Ashburn's mothers attic in Tilden, Nebraska...she took my phone number...so if she's not too attatched to them I'm going to hook her up with Mastro.

So not a great day for my collection, but some great conversation and a good time hunting for treasure.

That was a good day. You made some nice additions at a great price. You also picked up some good karma by stearing that lady in the right direction for those uni's. I've done that in the past and it really makes you feel good. Now if a dealer has something out with a crazy low sticker price, I'm dickering for $2.00 off then running for the car.

I love the narrative. I'm going to do that for you all after the first big show here in April. Maybe I'll even take pics.
