The preceding three digits - I think - are some kind of order number. If you had access to the bat company's records, you could probably find out when that particular bat was made more exactly, but definitely 2006.

Those 3 digits are the batch number; but what I don't know though is how many bats are made in each batch. Anybody know?

Typically the batch numbers are lower earlier in the season with the higher numbers batches later in the season. I've had Rawlings bats come from spring training with batch numbers starting with 00X. The Mauer with 676 probably was made/used towards the end of the 06 season.
Thanks for your help everyone. So theres a chance this bat was used in his 06 Batting Title Campaign Correct?
I've personally never seen a bat that was not used in the year that is stamped on the knob, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to happen. I'd just guess and say it's probably about 90% certain that the bat you have was indeed used in 2006.
Mauer7,
I am sure that your bat was used in 2006. I have Joe's opening day bat from 2007 (purchased from the Twins Pro Shop) and it has the 07 stamp on it. Hope that helps. You have yourself a beautiful bat...congrats!!!
