TROY AIKMAN GAME USED DALLAS COWBOYS HELMET FROM 90'S
http://cgi.ebay.com/TROY-AIKMAN-GAME-USED-DALLAS-COWBOYS-HELMET-FROM-90S_W0QQitemZ230300901741QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item2 30300901741&_trkparms=39%3A1|66%3A4|65%3A10|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 (http://cgi.ebay.com/TROY-AIKMAN-GAME-USED-DALLAS-COWBOYS-HELMET-FROM-90S_W0QQitemZ230300901741QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item2 30300901741&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66%3A4%7C65%3A10%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14)

tons of problems with this helmet - most likely an old consumer proline lid. interestingly, aikman did indeed switch from an air helmet to a riddell for a brief period during the end of his career. but he quickly returned to an air helmet which he had worn throughout his college and pro career. ironically the seller points to the high chinstrap snaps as proof that it's what aikman wore - but aikman only sported a high chinstrap snaps on his air helmet, not his riddell helmet. anyway, it ain't no aikman gamer...

ROGER STAUBACH GAME WORN HELMET W/ STAUBACH LETTER!!!!!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ROGER-STAUBACH-GAME-WORN-HELMET-W-STAUBACH-LETTER_W0QQitemZ350049223749QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid =p3286.m20.l1116

i've talked about this helmet before. staubach quit wearing this type of helmet (a riddell tk2 suspension) in 1972, after just four years in the league, because of concussion problems. in 1973 he switched to a clear shell max pro which he wore for the rest of his career. the date code on the ebay helmet is 1975 meaning that it was manufactured 3 years after staubach stopped wearing a suspension helmet. the wire photo used in the ebay ad to support this 1975 helmet was actually taken in 1971. in 1975 the cowboys also played the vikes in the playoffs, a game in which staubach wore his clear shell - which he had been wearing for the last three years. this can be easily seen when watching staubach's famous "hail mary pass" to win that dramatic 1975 playoff game. the seller knew this, yet was nonetheless able to get staubach's sig attesting to the contrary. further, the ebay suspension helmet does not match any suspension helmet staubach ever wore...

RICKY WILLIAMS MIAMI DOLPHINS GAME USED FOOTBALL HELMET
http://cgi.ebay.com/RICKY-WILLIAMS-MIAMI-DOLPHINS-GAME-USED-FOOTBALL-HELMET_W0QQitemZ120318777369QQcmdZViewItem?hash=it em120318777369&_trkparms=39%3A1|66%3A4|65%3A10|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 (http://cgi.ebay.com/RICKY-WILLIAMS-MIAMI-DOLPHINS-GAME-USED-FOOTBALL-HELMET_W0QQitemZ120318777369QQcmdZViewItem?hash=it em120318777369&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66%3A4%7C65%3A10%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14)

i was recently contacted about this helmet by an interested party. lots of problems with it. williams wore a titanium facemask which this lid doesn't have. the oakley shield is inconsistent with what williams wore and the shield hardware (clips/screws) are wrong. further, the warning label and flag decal do not appear to be authentic.

CHICAGO BEARS BRIAN URLACHER GAME HELMET
http://cgi.ebay.com/CHICAGO-BEARS-BRIAN-URLACHER-RECOND-VSR-2-GAME-HELMET_W0QQitemZ380073172173QQcmdZViewItem?hash=it em380073172173&_trkparms=39%3A1|66%3A4|65%3A10|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 (http://cgi.ebay.com/CHICAGO-BEARS-BRIAN-URLACHER-RECOND-VSR-2-GAME-HELMET_W0QQitemZ380073172173QQcmdZViewItem?hash=it em380073172173&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66%3A4%7C65%3A10%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14)

in the ad the seller asks: "was it his? can't say for sure, but sure looks like it." well i can say for sure - no, it's not urlacher's gamer. it's not even a chicago bears gamer. it's a vsr2-y youth helmet made to look like an urlacher lid.

GAME USED INDIANAPOLIS COLTS FOOTBALL HELMET

nothing more than a youth helmet - a reproduction.

Robert,
A lot of us really appreciate your informative posts. I don't own a single helmet, frankly am pretty 'scared' of them, but would like to pick up a couple of players I like at some point. Perhaps I will be a more educated buyer at that point, thanks to you sharing your expertise. And even if I never own a helmet, I always find your posts to be a good read and very interesting.
Thanks for sharing.

Yes, the seller was called out on the Williams helmet the last time he listed it. I believe it sold (shill bidding). Here it is listed again. Same helmet, same problems.

Yes, the Aikman. That is a classic. Complete with Z2B.

The Urlacher is the worst. The seller knows it is wrong, but is trying to pass it off. The other sellers MIGHT actually think that they have a GU helmet. One has a letter, one has a COA, and one has high chinstrap snaps.

The seller of the Colts Pac44 is the same seller as the Ricky Williams. He knows that the Pac44 is a kids helmet. He also has other helmets that are questionable at best. He has an Ohio State helmet with a beat up Riddell XL mask on a large shell. The facemask clips on the sides are bent at a terrible angle to accomodate the wide mask on a narrow helmet. The fake reproduced buckeyes on the rear look like an Amish farmer planted them. Nice even rows with no overlap. Never have seen a mask with that much wear on a helmet that looked so good. He has a beat up Oregon State helmet as well. Has a decal on the right side of the helmet. The left side does not have a decal on. There are deep gouges where the decal would go on the left side. How do those deep gouges get on a helmet with a large 20 mil decal as protection?

number9 - thanks for the kind words but, honestly, i don't think you should be worried about picking up an authentic helmet that interests you when the time comes. especially considering that an authentic game used football helmet is one of the most spectacular sports memorabilia collectibles any football fan could possibly own (imho). lot's of very knowledgeable helmet collectors at this forum so you will always be in very good hands! and, of course, when the time comes you could always post what you're looking for in the "items wanted" section of the board - the authentic gamers some of these members have are just amazing!

helmets - i didn't know the williams lid was called out before at the forum, perhaps before my time. i remember a seau lid. anyway the williams helmet apparently came from asi which, if i remember correctly, is a company some members have had issues with. i called asi, they said they did have some rw gamers at one time, and that they would check out the ebay listing and get back to me. i asked how it was they had so many williams "gamers" and how they arrived at their opinions of authenticity given the many issues with the ebay lid - i was given a convoluted response but was also told they would be happy to furnish a full refund if any of their items were proven to be not as described.

in another thread you invited me to post photos of helmets from my collection - here's one of my most prized lids, jim kelly's 1993 super bowl helmet with exceptional game wear. my grandfather was in the civil war with jim's aunt and, as a result, our families have forged a generational relationship. jim was also my roomate at miami although i attended arizona state. anyway, this helmet's provenance is "rock solid" but i would never dream of parting with it...

seriously tho, my collection is in such disrepair that it would be a chore to even take photos - honestly, my helmets are in large piles, stacked one on top of the other. there are some real gems mixed in there though - one of these days i will get around to organizing them and will post some photos. but i can guarantee my helmet collection doesn't touch some of the collections i've seen belonging to forum members - i mean some of these collections put the hall of fame to shame!

Robert,

I tried but couldn't find a photomatch of your Kelly helmet, I'll keep looking!;)

Seriously, I did have a question for you. Do you know if the Broncos ever wore clear shell helmets? Perhaps that isn't a valid question as my helmet knowledge is next to nothing - the only one in my collection I feel 100% about is the one that Karl Mecklenburg handed me after he dug it out of a box in his basement!

Thanks again for sharing what you know, as collectors we are all better off for it.

Funny. As I was reading your post, the photo was loading. I spend the weekends at a remote outpost that only has dial-up. As it was loading and as I was reading, I saw the top of the helmet with the holes. I got to the part about Jim Kelly, and the first thought was "Kelly didn't wear a Schutt!" Then I got to the Civil war part and roommates, and the entire photo loaded. Nice.

Yes, your collection sounds a lot like mine. We have a spare bedroom where they are just piled in on the floor on top of one another. I have shelves in the room, but they are full. I have a guy building cabinets for the family room, so one day I will be able to move more of them into that room.

I guess we will wait for you to get organized. A little lame IMO, but if that is your excuse, we will all continue to wonder what gems can be found in your piles.

yeah, your mecklenburg helmet is a real beauty - i also think the inman lid featured at helmet hut is a stunner as well. as far as the donkeys (i mean broncos!) wearing clear shells is concerned, they were pretty much a one trick pony in that they pretty much only sported riddells in the 60s and early 70s. my rams were the same which i find a little disappointing - it would be great if the rams were known to have worn clear shells, rawlings, wilson, etc. given they would be great to collect. but a classic rams rk or tk isn't too shabby! the nfl teams that come to mind as far as clear shells are concerned include: patriots, steelers, cowboys, eagles, lions, saints and falcons.

I think we should take a collection for aeneas. I don't know what his day job is, but he would probably be more beneficial to the world if he could just sit and post for us all day. For example, I have no idea what he's talking about in the above post, but I still read every word.

Who's with me??

apparently ebayer "big-daddys-sports" was willing to let his hall of fame lid go for a best offer price of $350 - times are tough.

this went for $1,250 - given that it's a pretty nice reproduction and the sig appears to be authentic, plus the fact that the price included a nice display case, gloves and other trinkets, the buyer could have done worse. but not much.

CHICAGO BEARS BRIAN URLACHER GAME HELMET

the seller ended the auction early - did some poor soul offer him big bucks via a private message or did the seller end the auction because he knew the jig was up?

nothing more than a youth helmet - a reproduction.

sold for $86 including s&h. the buyer could have made himself a much nicer reproduction at a cheaper price by simply buying a used helmet and colts decals on ebay.

I think a bit of heat was put on the seller of the Urlacher helmet...
