a guu member just forwarded me a mailer he received from hunt auctions announcing their january 31, 2009 extravaganza: the nfl experience - a live auction that will be held at this year's super bowl, produced by hunt and nfl auctions. the only lot featured on this flyer is, you guessed, yet another johnny unitas colts "gamer" with an estimated value of $25,000-$30,000.

for those of you counting at home, this is the fifth (that's right, fifth) different vintage game used johnny unitas colts lid to have hit the auction blocks in the last year and a half. now that's a lot of rare ju lids! assuming the unitas lid hanging in canton is the real deal, and you throw in the gamer unitas can be seen posing with below, we're up to seven unitas hats in circulation. mama mia!

seems to me that an enterprising young person could make a rather comfortable living introdicing unitas "gamers" into the collecting market given that it's clear that those purchasing these hats are not particularly concerned with the helmet's actual authenticity - at least not concerned enough to even go about a minimum amount of checking. as such, i imagine this lid will easily fetch five figures and so will the others that follow. hopefully the current hat will at least prove more convincing than the others - unfortunately this is not a particularly tall order.

Note: the hunt mailer - i added the inset which is from an article showing unitas posing with his gamer. oddly this particular hat, the one unitas is posing with, is not among those that have hit the blocks. go figure.

here are four unitas "gamers" that have sold in the last year and a half - is it any wonder why someone might be tempted to float one of these things?

here are some colts suspension helmets i pulled from my database, some authentic some not, that have sold at auction. clearly no shortage of canvases out there! food for thought - i have another dozen or so photos of colts suspension helmet sold at auction as well as another two dozen or so vintage white suspension helmets that have sold at auction...

Glad to see the Trojan made the list. I was worried when I read the post, but my fears turned into joy when I saw it on the post in all of its glory.

I thought one of the nicest ones that I've seen is the Chargers on the latest Mastro auction. You did a nice job of photo matching that helmet, and I think that helped add to the $3,500 and 7 bids that it brought.

Yes, it is certainly easy to make up a Unitas helmet. Take any of them that you have pictured, add a "19" wave your magic wand, and ta-da - a nice vintage Unitas. Even if the skeptics and the experts stay away from bidding, it still brings a few thousand at auction for a $400 suspension helmet.

yeah, it would appear that just about any vintage colts suspension helmet, authentic or not, = atm. it really is amazing. i'm hoping to get the date stamp info for this helmet - would be interesting.

Here one for you Robert. The rarest of all Unitas...

Never drilled for a mask, and a size 6 7/8. The EM was hoping as Johnny got older, that his head would shrink a bit to fit the helmet.
