Just got a call from my buddy thats at Redsfest. He said that he went straight through the front doors and over to the game used area. By the time he got there, all the Votto bats were sold. There were a few Dunn bats. There were also a few Freel bats. I'm sure there were a bunch of other players but thats all I was asking about.

Just got home and all I can say is that this was easily my worst Redsfest experience ever

I got in way too late because of traffic. I didn't even hit the main entrance doors until 4:30

Nothing but crap bats and overpriced jerseys

There were about 20-25 bats each of Paul Bako, Corey Patterson, Javier Valentin and Scott Hatterberg

The only Votto bats left were in multiple pieces or missing wood

No Bruce stuff at all :(

I am getting really tired of seeing scrub bats from 3 years ago as well

And once again some dealer got in early and bought up everything good.

He/She had a big stack of jerseys, like 4-5 Votto bats, 7-8 batting helmets.

In my opinion the whole trip was a giant waste of time and Im sorry that I went

The Game Used selection from the RCF was a disappointment this year, worst I've seen in last several years. Surprisingly, I counted at least 8 Votto bats & nearly the same from Dunn (though his were beat up a little more, cracked, broken, etc. A friend of mine purchased 1 of each, the Dunn was signed). I heard of one person getting a Bruce, but didn't see it. Also saw a Votto helmet being sold. I was near the front of the line, one of the first to check out the gamers, went straight to the jerseys..There was a pile of jerseys (mostly $75), bats (including 2 Votto's) & several common helmets ($30 each) near the entrance but that person did not enter early, in fact entered after I did...From what I saw, had a helper & grabbed what they could, an attendant watched over it as they continued to shop, likely a dealer or ebayer, but can't be sure. My friend followed me by several minutes, walked over to the bat bin & picked out his Votto. I purchased 3 jerseys & 8 hats, 7 of which are the "Patriotic" red/white/blue style (only one's I saw available). We left around 630pm and there were still items available, nothing new had been put out. Along w/ jerseys, hats, helmets & bats, there were also pants & some catching gear. Will be glad to answer any questions others may have. Jay ldonalds@columbus.rr.com

They also had at least 2 of the Joe Nuxhall #41 jerseys the team wore on Opening Day

I saw Bill Bray and someone else. Forget the number

$300 pricetag on the Bill Bray.

I picked up a Josh Roenicke Game Used Road Cool Base Jersey with the "Nuxy" patch on the sleeve.

I was happy to get that as he is one of my favorite Reds players.

Also saw a Homer Bailey ST jersey for $225.

I have not heard anything about Dunn returning to Cinn. I know the Nationals have always had an eye on him, and if they can't sign Tex., then he figures to move to top priority. For Dunn to go there, he'll get the payday but be playing for another team going nowhere. It would be nice to see him have a chance to play with a contender...

I entered the shop around 4:10 pm and yes it was swarming. I saw the person with all that stuff to the side. I did come across a Josh Hamilton, Adam Dunn, and a Joey Votto bat in the bins but they were just hacked. Tape wrapped all over it and I passed because of it.

Only thing I picked up was a Adam Rosales and Paul Janish game used bats for $25 each. I was mainly on the hunt for Chris Valaika's spring training jersey. I know its a long shot but did anyone happen to pick it up?

I went last night as well. It was nice seeing some cheaper prices on stuff. Seemed last year everything was over $100 a jersey. I took a bunch of pictures in the game used area. I will post them if people want to see them. I got there right around 5. So I didn't see what was there at the start. They had an entire rack of spring training jerseys starting at $50. Jerseys anywhere from $75 on up. Had a few too many at $150 of nobodies or late season call ups. Also had those signed retail jerseys mixed in that I doubt many people realized weren't game used. I was really hoping they would have had some of the camouflage game used jerseys worn for two games on 4th July weekend. Didn't see any of those. I saw someone say the did have stars and stripes caps, those must have all been gone right away. Never saw those, maybe someone came in early and grabed all the camouflage jerseys. I did also see a few of the Nuxhall opening day jerseys at $300. Bats anywhere from $25 up. Some were even MLB authenticated. Mostly same guys Chakes saw Bako, Patterson types . A few decent deals were at $50 like Edwin, Freel and some pitchers bats. I didn't see any Arroyo, Volquez, Cueto, Cordero stuff. A few Harang bats were at $75. I ended up getting two jerseys. I picked up Affeldt with awesome use. The tags show many a washing. Nice fraying and number puckering. Also got red alternate of Jolbert Cabrera with nice use. Has some black type marks in the back bottom area.

Redsfest 2009 is where I'm sure it will be next. It seemed like a lot of stuff sold last night. Many people had their hands full of stuff and saw all kinds of people in the autograph lines with game used jerseys and bats in tow. Did anyone go today? Wonder how much was left at the end and if they did start slashing prices in the final few hours. They have done this is in the past. I know last year they only dicounted the bats at the end.

I will upload those pictures later tonight. Maybe a few of you are in them. I did some overall shots and of the different ares of what was avaliable.
Let's see some other pictures of what everyone else got. That is cool that you got Rosales to sign his gamer bat. He seems like a really cool guy.

I do remember 2 years ago all left over used items were still for sale. I forget who I contacted, but I remember that I made a verbal agreement to buy 2 of the bats and then I went down to the stadium and picked them up. The lady who was in charge of selling the items sent me a list of everything for sale with the prices by email. Hope this helps!

I swear if I picked up another dang Bako or Hatteberg bat! There were so many of them they could have filled their own bin full of them.

Thanks. I think it's cool when people post pictures from these type of events. So people who couldn't make it can see what it was like. One thing I did notice on the bats. A couple Hatteberg bats that Dunn used, had his tape job on them. So people could have gotten a used Dunn bat for $25. Also a Conine bat with Dunn tape job. You can see in one photo a bat with Griffey tape job on it. Also saw a Austin Kearns bat with a definite Wily Mo tape job on it.
So did no one on the board go Saturday? Would love to hear what kind of stuff was left and if they cut prices on stuff to get it out the door. It is fun to look back and think what I should have gotten. I wish I saw those Stars and Stripes caps, what were they selling them for and were they MLB authenticated?

Indyred- Now that I think about it, your exactly right on those tape jobs! Didn't even cross my mind when I was there. I didn't get to go Saturday because I had to work so I would be interested in seeing if the reds cut prices at the end.

The Rosales bat is a funny story. I was third in line and when I handed it to him he smiled real big and said "wow". I seen a total of 2 Rosales bats there. The other one had tape all over it. The redsfest guy asked him if he knew when he had used it. He sat there and was trying to think hard...

I decided to pull it up on my phone and told him he used it on 9-18-08 bottom of 9th inning. The redsfest worker said "oh yeah thats the game you slid headfirst into home, Rosales looked at him and said no way, really? It was all real funny because Rosales really tried to think what he did in that game.

I googled it when I got home, looked like he went I believe 2-4 that game and he cracked this bat on a fly out to left field. If only I could get a photomatch of it, that would be very very cool.

Chris Valaika is a guy of great personality. He recognized me and my wife there and asked what we had been up to and what we had to get signed. He has to problem striking up a conversation with you. I told him I had picked up his Lookouts jersey from the team. He knows I try to get everything I can for our collection. I'm still very thankful that he gave us his batting gloves last year because I could not find any and even offered to pay him for it!

Can't wait to see him play in Cincy.

Had a good time at Redsfest this year. The Reds Community Fund was really a disappointment this year like everyone said. There was some dealers who had some cool game used stuff, you just had to really look for it. My family and I were again asked to help with Eric Davis' Hitting From The Heart booth. I was given Eric's 2006 Spring Training Coach's jersey for helping out. I also got my 1991 Home white jersey signed by Eric.

Hey:
Getting into Redsfest at 4:30 is too late! I thought Redsfest was GREAT! I saw people with Votto, Bruce, Phillips & Dickerson Bats and other Cool stuff. The most expensive Bats were $100.00. I think there were around 18,000 people that attended Redsfest this year. When the doors open at 4:00 many run to the Community Fund's Booth first before they get in line for autographs. You sound jealous of the people who were fortuate to get their favorite player. Just because you were shut out, does not mean that Redfest sucked! Grow up!

chakes89
12-15-2008, 04:59 AM
Exactly my thinking

I am far from jealous. I am mad because I didn't get anything from my favorite player.

That whole community fund is a joke when it comes to selling game used stuff. They sold good stuff on mlb.com auctions and gave the fans the shaft with all of the Bako and Patterson crap they put out.

I went to a game this year and they had $600 on a Bronson Arroyo bat and $225 for a Javier Valentin bat. $600 FOR BRONSON ARROYO!!!

Why not just tell people beforehand that they have no shot at getting anything good when they are selling stuff during the season and that the HOF gets to cherry-pick the good stuff beforehand. Then see how many people come out. Personally, I know I would have to re-think coming to Redsfest if I knew I was just going to get screwed everytime.

I understand what your saying. Either except the fact that your going to have a VERY low chance on getting something good thats game used OR show up at 6am to be the first person in line and wait 10 and a half hours for the opportunity to race over and make a 30 second purchase. Unless your THAT dedicated, leave the wallet at home.

Good info here, now I have no regrets as I had to travel this weekend for work and missed RedsFest for the first time in years. I have found that much of the best stuff is sold by the Red's community fund at the ballpark during the season (albeit for a price of course...) In fact I picked up the following this season at GABP:

1. Beautiful Joey Votto GU Autographed bat uncracked
2. Sweet Jeff Keppinger GU autographed bat with a taped handle crack
3. 2007 David Weathers autographed home red GU jersey

Pick ups from the 07 RedsFest include:

1. GU Reds heavy dugout jacket worn in 2007, very nice.
2. Home White GU Cool Base from R. Cormier
3. Aaron Harang White sleeveless autographed jersey (not GU)
4. Road autographed jersey (not GU) from Edwin Encarnacion
5 Two sweet GU bats from Jason LaRue
6. GU bat from Juan Castro

Previous pickups:

2005 Willy Mo Pena batting helmet
2003 Steve Smitherman batting helmet (both former Dayton Dragons hence the buys).

So past pickups from the Red's community fund have been good for me, sounds like this year was an exception however. BTW, all of the above will be hitting ebay soon so if any interest prior to that pls let me know.

Thanks

Im hoping that it's the jersey he wore in his first major league game

And seeing as how he pitched 4 out of his 5 games with the Reds on the road, this may be his only game jersey with any decent game use

I'm starting to see a few items from Redsfest floating around the internet. So far 15 jerseys mostly from Ballpark heroes, and 2 Votto bats...1 signed on Ebay. Anybody else seeing any items anywhere else? I'm really keeping an eye out for the Votto bats, as I heard quite a bit were sold.

Ball Park made a nice pick up from Redsfest.... believe they had a few more that are not listed, maybe they sold already? That Burton jersey is one I am eying but that is a pretty heavy price.

Went to Redsfest with my daughter and wife. Wanted Votto to sign his Louisville Bats jersey but lines were too long and when you have a 8 year old with you it's all about her. Still have his autographed spring training jersey with MLB holo and game used minor league bat.Had tickets for the meet and greet. Check out the pics...Also have a bat on ebay autographed by the team for the Ricky Stone auction check it out ebay item #160305011796

Meet and greet was Saturday during the awards 2-4. It was very nice only about 25 people in the room.Players would come in and you could talk, get pictures and autographs. The players asked more questions of you than of them. They sat around and joked and was very laid back. Did not have any problems as all the players were nice as could be and would sign as much as you would give them. For me it was my little girl and giving her history of the Reds and alot of the players she already knew. She loves getting autographs and her most prized posession from Redsfest was the ball she had signed by "Gapper" the mascot!!!!

My son and I made our first trip to RedsFest this year. Overall it was a fun trip. We entered the door about 4:05 and headed straight for the game-used stuff. Like everyone else has reported, we also saw the guy already loaded down with jerseys, Votto bats, etc. We picked up one of the Dunn $100 bats and a Ryan Hanigan jersey. Interesting story about the Hanigan jersey. I first picked out a road/gray jersey. When my son was getting it signed I noticed that his name was spelled with two n's on the jersey. I also noticed that the jersey he was wearing at the table had only one n. I thought it might be an "error" jersey and still pretty cool. So I asked him if he had ever worn a two-n jersey. He said "No, I never wore this". I took it back to the game-used store and they let me swap it for a one-n red jersey. So apparently the Reds will label jerseys as game-worn that aren't.

Hey Guys,

Just out of curiosity, could anybody tell me what the "guy loaded down with jerseys" looked like? Just a little worried it might be me, and as AWA85 can attest to, I am certainly no dealer. Just a collector who wanted to get in early and grab what he could.

I did manage to snag some decent stuff though.

Thanks,
Josh

Seems like Ball Park Heroes made their mark once again with a good amount of jerseys and some quality bats.

Josh is a big collector, not somebody trying to flip things for huge profit! Can't get upset at a collector who is grabbing stuff for their own collection.

Would upset me a bit for the few dealers that have those $100 jerseys up to $250 and beyond now the day after Redsfest.

What do you guys think of the Dick Pole jersey BPH has on ebay. No way he ever used it in a mound visit in a game. I don't even think he would be allowed to wear it. Maybe as a under shirt or something. I've never seen a player or a coach wear a cut off jersey like this in a game.

Yes the Reds used the home Sunday red alternate for a bunch of Saturday home games as well this season. The first Saturday game was the one vs Red Sox in June and then they used it for quite a few more Saturday home games the rest of season. As well as all Sunday home games. The Cabrera I have shows really nice use. The only exception was July 4th weekend when Reds used the camo/military jersey on both the Saturday and Sunday games that weekend.

AWA85- I got the Dragons items from a collector who has a ton of Dragons players game used items. Unfortunately the Dragons NEVER sell game used items so I have no idea where Valaika's Dragons jerseys are. I even offered $500 to the team and yes they declined!

I got in touch with someone who handles the Dragons gear and he told me the the Dragons pretty much got everything on lockdown. He said even HE hasnt been able to get anything out the doors. So the only way the jerseys are in the hands of collectors are if you buy them from people who have won them in the raffle at the stadium. Can't imagine why the team wouldnt just wanna sell them, especially since people are offering big bucks for em

Sincityson

There's a few teams that have this sort of policy. I think it's essentially a matter of ego or greed or both, or simply thinking they can get much more by selling raffle tickets. Either way, it's A ball, this shouldn't happen.

So they aren't making any money there.
