well that didn't take long. many of the steals obtained from mastro's last auction (debacle?) are now being flipped on ebay. apparently ebayer "lexibell" was a big mastro winner and he's listed the bills helmet (a) attributed to ferguson and the bengals helmet (b) attributed to munoz. these helmets were picked up at mastro for $375 and $975 respectively and, combined, realized a whopping 5 bids. "lexibell" has listed the ferguson with a starting price of $1,000 and he's listed the munoz with a starting price of $3,000. he's also listed many other items he won at mastro...

how dismal was the mastro auction? the greg pruitt clear shell gamer signed by the college hall of fame star, pictured below (c), realized only 1 bid and sold for $300 at mastro. to put this tragedy into perspective, the bu clear shell pictured below, attributed to no particular player, just sold on ebay for $850 and the a&m clear shell, attributed to no particular player, just sold on ebay for $730. and both realized a ton of bids. and the ou clear shell pictured below that was not attributed to any particular player? it sold on ebay for $975.

Just noticed we can add the Elway jersey to that list:

Thanks,

[Happy to say the Tombstone Jackson AFL All-Star jersey won't be on the list! :) ]

there are a couple of guys out there that do an incredible job making reproduction clear shells - they are both very honest and state the helmet is a reproduction when they list them. but it looks like someone wasn't quite as honest and sold that clear shell reproduction as authentic. great looking lid, but one of their reproductions. i knew it was only a matter of time before these babies started hitting the market as authentic - they're just so damn nice and too damn close to the real deal for some to resist. these guys simply make perfect reproductions.

That's interesting. I was wondering why it was so clean. When I made my clear shell, I had to buy second hand parts and remove paint from the shell etc. Are these guys having to do the same, or, are they reproducing/manufacturing all of the parts as well, ala Helmet Hut style? If it's the latter, I would love to get my hands on a virgin clear shell and have my way with it.

they are both always on the look out for original clear shells which they strip down, remove the padding and go to work. they produce their own ultra thin decals (think old school plastic model decals) as well. just excellent, top notch work, they are both artists imo.

fwiw another one of their repros just sold on ebay without any mention being made that it was a reproduction - it was an ole miss repro that fetched $850...

Doing those waterslide decals was the most laborious and artisan like process of the whole project. Then again, I was working with a High Def. Ink Jet printer, whereas they probably have something more along the lines of a High Def. laser, or, simply do the decals in ultra thin vinyl. Which is the route I will probably take next time.

Is there any practical way to mark these helmets as reproduction, without taking away from the beaty of the helmets? Maybe something located on the insides that can tip people off?
