a carlolina panthers "gamer" just sold on ebay for around $125, lots of bids submitted - it was nothing more than a riddell vsr-2y which is riddell's youth model. in fact youth models are sold as gamers rather frequently on ebay because, imo, much of the time both the seller and the buyer have no idea what they're selling or buying. anyway, for those members that are interested in picking up a game used lid but are not familiar with helmets, be sure to check the forum first and ask questions!

gotta love those little guys.....

I sent the Panther Seller an email stating that very thing. He stated that he would revise the listing and even stated that he would cancel the listing. He never did either. He sent me photos of some of his other helmets in his collection - which was very nice. He had a lot of knowledge about all of them, which led me to believe that he knew all along about the Panthers youth helmet.

Below is the email string between the two of us. Shown in red...

The basic helmet design is the same. The helmet that you have is a VSR2-Y with the Y in the model designated as "Youth." The shell is made of ABS instead of the harder Kra Lite plastic that an adult helmet is made from. You really can't tell by the look of the shell, however the ABS is softer, hence it gouges and scratches more easily than an adult helmet. The padding on a youth helmet is also Gray in color vs. the white padding of an adult helmet.

The side decals are not the same as what the Panthers wear, nor is the numbers on the rear.

Hope this helps.

If you have other helmets for sale, I may be interested, as I am a helmet collector.

Hi, If this is True, I'll revise my Listing. Actually Cancel would be Better. The Helmet is as Big
as the Eagle Helmet and Some of the USFL I've Kept. It's well Used. Would a Youth Team
wear the Same Helmet as a NFL Team? Thanks,

Dear josephbmcgowan8wia,

The helmet that you have is not a Panthers Game used helmet. It is a youth helmet designed for children under the age of 14.

interestingly the same ebayer had two other vsr2y lids listed (raiders and patriots) but clearly stated they were not pro helmets. i wonder why he was convinced the cats helmet was a pro lid given that it was identical to the other two, model wise.

in the guy's defense, i've come across very honest, experienced helmet collectors that just can't seem to remember the differences in helmet models and/or tend to often miss details in decals, facemasks, chinstraps, etc. - as such they inadvertently buy and sell knockoffs. i've also come across more than a couple of honest, experienced helmet collectors that have asked my opinion but simply refuse to believe it when i tell them they have an obvious reproduction on their hands. i will email them indisputable proof, links to manufacturers websites, links to guu discussions and describe in detail why their helmet is clearly not authentic. but because they obtained it from a "reliable" source, or they obtained it from a guy that got it from a guy that got it from a guy that used to be x team's assistant field maintenance manager, whatever i offer goes in one ear and out the other. gotta love it!
