    Most Ridiculous Provenance Story...

The "Is Everybody A Batboy?" thread got me thinking. We've all heard those ridiculous stories about how an item got into an owner's possession. What's the most far-fetched story you've ever heard, and have you ever been duped by one?

With baseball cards, you'll often hear the seller claim an early card belonged to his grandfather or grandmother who died circa 1975. The problem being when the card is obviously a reprint from 2005 or after.

With every forged Babe Ruth or George Washington autograph or T206 Honus Wagner there is an accompanying bogus story about where it came from.

I love the part about how his boss is a "professional memorabilia collector".....

          I guess we're all pro's then.....
          Thank you,

Early baseball card collectors will tell you the cliche provenance in that hobby is grandpa's cabinet. In the old days, cards were sometimes actually found in antique desks, cabinets, attics, etc. After a while, it seemed that half the modern counterfeits and reprints being sold on ebay came from 'grandpa's cabinet.'

I`m a former California Notary Public, I recently resigned my Commission. It`s amazing how many people asked me to Notarize something such as Memorabilia, thinking it would help increase Value. For 10 bucks, I did plenty of them. All a Notary does is verify you did one of two things...

#1 was Identified (personally appeared before me) & signed Item in my presence...

#2 Swearing that statement you make is true...

Just because someone swears (under oath) what they`re signing/writing is true, doesn`t make it True!!! The Notary is only accountable for Identifying the person.

I`m really itching to comment on a Notarization I did (memorabilia) but I can`t, it would be unethical.

A notary is nice when the signer was Mickey Mantle.

I've seen a number of official Mantle, Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio autographed items where the signing was witnessed and documented by a notary public.
