i don't know how one would tell a 1992 russell BP retail jersey from a gamer. ideally on a 1992 russell shirt i'd like to see a poly tag but it's
possible they didn't put those on BP shirts. maybe someone else would know. coast to coast seems like a good source for 90s era mariners items.
i saw this shirt plus a griffey and a randy johnson on coast to coast's website. here are a couple:
the griffey is interesting because it's got a 1992-style rawlings tag. (contrary to what their website says, the jersey isn't from 1990). in 1992, the mariners, like the majority of MLB teams that year, began the season by being supplied by russell. part way through they decided they'd rather go back to rawlings shirts. (not sure why considering they were just going to revert back to russell in 1993). 1992 mariners rawlings shirts are hard to find for some reason. so this griffey seems to be a rare example of a 1992 mariners BP shirt. i'm sure griffey received a 1992 russell BP shirt but apparently, after most of the team went back to rawlings for their game jerseys mid-season, they also went back to rawlings for some of their BP shirts.
on an early 90s BP gamer, i'd expect to see heavy use.
i'd like to change that opinion. i don't believe the shirt is from 1992 because, while the tag is a "1992 style" tag, the shirt still has the rawlings logo on the sleeve. this wouldn't have been permitted in 1992 when russell held the "official contract" and rawlings shirts that were worn in 1992 were done so without any logo on the sleeve (to hide the fact that another manufacturer was supplying shirts).
i've seen tags appear sooner they they normally would due to late season orders. the majority of shirts would be ordered in spring and the tagging would be indicative of that point in time. however, if the tagging style was changed late in the season, the most of the shirts from the season wouldn't see it but a few late season orders would see the new tagging.
i think the griffey shirt therefore is a late 1991 season order. not sure why there was the need to place late orders for griffey in 1991 but perhaps he was keeping coast to coast busy by the boxload.
I dont see how Randy Johnson even in 1992 would wear a size 48 he would be a 50 or 52. A 48 would be way short.
Size 48 should be correct. The 48 is only related to chest width (and this jersey is actually just under 25" from pit to pit (ie. size 50)) and the length is as long as size 52 jerseys that I have.

I agree but also shoulder width plays a part in to the chest size (just an fyi)
I am 6'2 225lbs I normally wear a 46 to 48 and part of the reason of that is because I happen to have wide shoulder length otherwise I would probably be able to fit into a 44 if i had average size shoulders
48 is highly likely and probably even a bit big on Johnson for 1992.
He is currently 6'10 225lbs which means for his height he is very skinny. And I am sure he was even skinnier when he first started. Whihc would make a size 48 highly probable.
Actually I know Randy wore a size 50 because I picked up about 8 of these at a Mariners silent auction back in 1993 in cluding a Randy Johnson size 50 (russell). I also have Tim Leary (russell), Scott Bradley (rawlings), Henry Cotto (russell), Omar Vizquel (russell), Pete O'Brien (rawlings) and Tino Martinez (russell). I think I paid about 90.00 per jersey except for Tino he was 125 and Randy Johnson was 160 or so. I also gave away the Mike Schooler for charity at my sons school.
In addition, the Russell BP jerseys appear to have run large, as Griffey wore a 46 while his normal regular season jersey size was 48 during the same time period.
