Hey All,

I'm holding a Sammy Sosa jersey from his Orioles days. It's the orange on black model they wore on Friday home games in 2006 and has the customary Sosa elastic arm bands. The strip tag says "Authentic Majestic" with a "47" hanging below. The is no wash tag or any sign that there ever was a wash tag. The n.o.b. is not a name plate but individual letters - S - O - S - A. I figure since these jerseys were only worn a couple times they weren't made with all the same specs as a more heavily worn jersey.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Not all game worn jerseys will have a wash tag. I own a 2003 Charles Johnson Rockies jersey which also doesn't have any wash tag.

Do I trust then that since my friend got it from the O's when he worked there and b/c it has the elastic arm cuffs that it's legit? there is some signs of use and it does feel more light and elastic than a normal authentic retial would. Feel like I should just pick it up b/c it's available.

The Orioles would wear those black alternates on Friday home games (which would be 13 games over the season). I'll have to check but I have a few of those black alternates (common players) and I thought they had wash tags.

Thank you!! Excited to see what you find out. I think the elastic arm band thing is carrying a lot of weight right now since it would be odd to sell a retail authentic with elastic, wouldn't it?

I'm by no means the expert but I'll take the jersey for a few bucks if the guy hit 600+ HR

wash tags only come on majestic jerseys (both game and BP) and majestic has had wash tags on their shirts for a long time; since the 90s.

i'm guessing kyle hess' 2003 rockies jersey doesn't have a wash tag because it's made by russell, not majestic.

sosa only played for the orioles in '05. should an '05 majestic gamer have a wash tag? yes.

the majestic tag has another tag with "47" hanging below it? i've never seen a size 47. 48 yes, but not 47.

post pics of the sosa. front, back, tagging.

Pics coming...

Found the 0062 wash tag inside the shirt..... wasn't on the neck line so I freaked out. I would imagine 47 is custom just as the elastic is.

most of the rangers jerseys from players who are traded for or called up lat in the season dont have set tags on them but generally have wash tags.

Can't wait to see the pics. I have never seen a Majestic in an odd # size so a size 47 would be super rare.

I know Sammy had worn size 48 jerseys when he was with the Cubs and they always looked tight on him. Maybe he shed an inch when he went to the Orioles!!! ;)

Or maybe when he stopped taking his "Flinstone Vitamins." ;)

Toward the end of his time with the Cubs, I did see a few "size 47" Sosa jerseys. The ones I saw had an embroidered swatch tag sewn below the Majestic tag on the tail, not the normal size flag tag. The font used on the size tags I've seen is exactly like the one used on Majestic's strip tagging. I'm not sure if Majestic ever produced a special "47" flag tag.

in 2006 on the left sleeve they had the numbers 44 as a memorial for Elrod Hendricks, is that on there?

Also doing a little research team logo's, and lettering including the name on the back should be two colors Orange and Black. The black bordering would be hard to see in a picture but in person you should be able to tell easily. Hope this helps.

Sosa didn't play in 2006

This jersey is from 2005, his lone year with the O's. The 2006 season he was without a team before playing for the Rangers in 2007. I need to go through all Friday night home games and see how many he played in since he only played in 102 games in 2005. Would be nice to know how many of these orange on blacks he got that year!

Thanks all for insight... keep it coming!!!

I forgot about that year off. I only went with 06 because that is the year he said it was from. My bad

Ran some figs...

Sosa went 5 for 28 with HR #576 (off Pavano) and 3 RBI during all 2005 Friday night home games. He appeared in 8 of the 13 games total in his only year with the O's. The team won the first 3 and lost the next 10 to end 3-10 with the magic orange on blacks.

Rudy,

Sammy Sosa wore a size 47 (away) jersey, obviously custom made per his wishes, during most of his glory years in Chicago. I owned two of his gamers....one home, used to hit his 534th homer (tied him with the great Jimmie Foxx) and one away, used to hit home run #536 (tied hm with the great Mickey Mantle). I believe the home was a 48, and the away was a 47. I'll look when I get home and open the safe. One of them ABSOLUTELY positively was a 47...and both had the elastic manufactured into the sleeves. I'll also check to see if it has a wash tag.

I sold the away jersey a few years back....right after all the steroid noise was heated up....wish I hadn't now. Those authentic Cubs jerseys are breathtakingly beautiful. I will never sell the home one, too much history (used at Wrigley, tied J. Foxx while wearing it, and....It's SAMMY!) Even has the little speckles of mud on the back of the jersey from when Sammy would sprint out onto the field at the beginning of the game. One of my favorite pieces.

This is a Home Size 48 of mine. A HR jersey Sammy hit against the SF Giants & Barry Bonds.

Nice jersey Andrew!!

Do those 2002 jerseys have the strip tag sewn into the collar (something like "01 48 21 02" set #, size player number, year, respectively)? Just curious, and not positive I got the strip tag info correct.....just an example.

Yes Andrew, Sammy wore size 48 in his Home jerseys, and the odd custom size 47 for his road jerseys....Possibly the "cut" was different?
