At tonight's Cardinals Care stadium auctions, "replica" road jerseys of Chris Carpenter and Scott Rolen were offered. Both were tagged "2000 Set 1." So, apparently, the team is continuing its practice of stripping down old jerseys (of coaches, bench guys, leftovers, etc.) and attaching the names and numbers of current players. They get these jerseys signed and then auction them as "replicas."

Even though the jerseys were the wrong size for the players (and made by Rawlings, not Majestic), this practice is just inviting fraud. It's not a stretch to imagine one or both of these jerseys being used to create Carpenter or Rolen "gamers." I'm fairly certain that some "replicas" with the 2002 "JFB" and "DK57" patches have magically turned into gamers.

Long story short, take care when buying recent Cardinals jerseys and do your homework.

One other interesting auction note: The Cardinals offered a signed Scott Rolen 2005 game-used Louisville Slugger at its opening day auction. It sold for $3,000. Insane. Good for Cardinals Care and the kids that benefit from the charity... but, wow!
