Unless the bat is falling apart, I take a couple of swings with it. I then inspect it for cleat marks, ball marks, any damage that was not mentioned (been lucky so far) and then I make a futile attempt to photomatch it. Holding them when I'm tense, anxious, agitated, restless etc tends to calm me down. My bats are my therapy. I'm not violent so I won't be smashing anything and if I ever was to, I promise not to ever auction it off like some people (Charlie Sheen)
Vladimir Guerrero does this as well I've heard... Watch out for those "no batting gloves" guys!
To keep on topic, I usually feel the weight of it for a few minutes, look at the ball marks/use on it, etc. New bats sit by the couch for a couple days until the "new" has worn off. Then, they go to the rack...

you might want to inspect it for damage before you swing it!

That is so funny, I smell the pine tar too. Much like the rest of you guys, I inspect it up and down, followed by a lame attempt to photomatch it (thank God for Kyle). I thought I was the only weirdo to smell the pine tar; glad there are others out there! - Joe
Whew, good thing I saved the photo of the hottie....
Now that I have space to display my collection, I almost always know where I will put an item and how it will be displayed before it arrives. Whether in a frame or on a bat rack or in a bat tube.
Thank you,
David
