View Full Version : What is your White Whale?

A friend of mine who is not into game worns but is intrigued by my collection asked me recently "So Captain Ahab, what's your white whale?" I thought it was a great question, and I think it will produce some diverse and fascinating answers on this board. (If you are lost, I apologize. Without the cute Moby Dick reference, what is the one item you will search forever for until you find it and when you do, you will work incredibly hard to obtain it.) To be fair, please mention only 3 or less. Stories as to why would be really appreciated to. I like to know why we do what we do, it makes me a better all around collector :D

For me, Barry Meisel owns my penultimate Holy Grail. Pavel Bure's 1994 Stanley Cup Finals game worn Black jersey. It's photomatched many times. He is a Rangers fan, so it's insult to injury. Every year at the MeiGray expo he brings it. I get to touch it and talk to him about it but he won't sell it. I consider myself lucky to be able to see and touch it every year. Many people never get to be so close to their grail. One day, hopefully he will let it go and I'll get it. Short story as to why is because I was a Canucks fan in New York and Bure was my hero. I wore #10 when I played deck hockey and he was responsible for some of the greatest sports moments I've ever experienced. Plus no one else knew him around Long Island so I felt like he was MY player. His successes were almost claimed by me as his sole fan on Long Island. When the Canucks made the Finals, teachers and students in my High School congratulated me as if I had something to do with it.

Two would be Sami Salo's Purple Detroit Vipers Jersey. He played 5 games for them and I own the white version. Sami is the Defenseman I always wanted to be, he seems to stop at least 2 goals a game and he is just a lunchbox guy. Shows up, does his job, gets no respect and dives, checks and stops everything he can 100% heart and effort. It's his rarest jersey and looks wicked sweet as well.

Last would be the jersey Shawn Camp wore against the Toronto Blue Jays in September 2006. I took my wife to her first pro game in Toronto against the (then) lowly Devil Rays. We sat behind the Rays bullpen and were really early to the game. We got to watch Batting Practice and I yelled to Shawn "Good Luck today Camp! They miss you in K.C." He came over and started talking to us. We chatted for awhile and I told him I had been coming to games for like 25 years and I never got a ball. He says "This is the ball I used last night to get the last out of the inning. Now you have a game used ball bro." I was shocked and amazed at how awesome he was to a fan in a rival ballpark (I was even wearing a Jays jersey) When Carl Crawford hit one into the bullpen during B.P., he yelled up "Hey Jennie!" When she looked down, he threw the ball to my wife. Just an amazing day and made her so happy and both of us lifelong Shawn Camp fans.

So, tell me Ahab, what's your Moby Dick........?

Great topic...first choice would be the black jersey worn by Tony Gabriel in the 1976 Grey Cup between Ottawa and Saskatchewan. Honestly, any Gabriel at this point would be fine with me.

Second choice would be a Dan Marino from the 1984 season with great provenance and decent wear.

Third choice would be a Kent Nilsson Edmonton Oilers jersey from the 1986-87 season.

My white whales are probably nothing compared to what other people like but they are:

1. A Yadier Molina game used #41 Jersey. Any kind, of course i would liek the 04 world series jersey but any of his gam eused #41 jerseys will do because I started to like him right about the time he got into Manny ramirez's face at the world series

2. Yadier Molina catcher's gear. Any piece or all of it. a chest protector will be awesome. I really like how he plays defense and he is a gamer.

3. The Yadier Molina cleats that were auctioned off on mlb auctions a while back. I really wanted them and comcast internet was down in my area when I was going to bid. I learned my lesson but I wish I would have won them.

These are the three items I would really want right now. I use to want a batting helmet but I won the batting helmet on the mlb auction this past weekend of Yadi's. I love it.

If anyone can help me with my wishlist please poitn me in the right direction.

This is an easy list for me...

3) Nolan Ryan GU Rangers Home White Jersey - Preferably from his final season in 1993. Obviously from my board name, I'm a HUGE Ryan fan.

2) Matt Holliday's GU jersey he was wearing for 'The Slide' in the 163rd game of the 2007 MLB Season (Yes, for those who don't know, the 'Play-In' or 'Tie Breaker' game is considered a Regular Season Game - # 163) Outside of Ryan, I probably have more Matt Holliday stuff than any other player in my collection - Matt has always been great to me (he knows what all I have) and I'm really hoping to re-connect at ST...

1) Nolan's famous 'bloody' gamer from the chopper back to the mound off Bo Jackson's bat.

Funny story about my #1... I was at that game and saw the event unfold 1st hand. Well a friend of mine knew one of the Ranger's club house guys at the time who told us that in between innings when Nolan took his 7 stitches to his lip and changed jerseys, he grabbed another jersey from his locker and wrote on it, "Bo - I owe you one. - Nolan" and had the clubhouse guys take it to the visitor's dugout for Bo.

I've retold this story for years because I though it was a great story and I wanted THAT jersey as well... except that jersey doesn't exist - I had been keeping a GREAT sports 'Urban Leagend' alive for the past 20 + years...

See, I got to see Nolan 4 times in the 1st 3 months of 2008... he was here in Denver, CO as Grand Marshall of the National Western Stock Show in January (I went down and saw him and got to talk to him for about 1/2 an hour)... then he was here in February in Greeley, CO (about 45 mi NW of Denver) for the Weld County Friends of Baseball Breakfast as their keynote speaker... finally I saw him a couple of times at Surprise Field for Ranger's ST...

During our conversations, I brought up the 'Legend'...Nolan smiles, kind of chuckles and then tells me that while he had never heard that story, he thought it was funny - but not true. In fact he said he and Bo are still good friends and get together to go hunting fairly often - for those who don't know, Bo is a very serious and very accomplished Bow Hunter (no pun intended).

That's my three...

There's a few things that I've seen here lately that I want, but nothing that I'd sell the farm for.

I would always like some Yankee bats from my youth - Munson, Reggie, Mattingly

The Ryan jersey story reminded me of something that actually did happen a few years ago. A rookie player for the Diamondbacks accidentally hit the opposing team's catcher with his bat, on a swing, giving him a concussion. The next night, the catcher sent over his cracked helmet, signed, with the inscription, "Your first major league hit."

My "white whale" may sound fairly modest...but I would really like to own one of the field jackets Bob Brenly wore while he managed the DBacks.

A Matt Williams DBacks batting helmet would be really nice, too.

My white whale would be Manny Ramirez's 2008 game used home Dodger jersey he was wearing on Saturday, September 6th. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to photo match it either, as it has pine tar on the left sleeve....

That was the game Manny hit his 521st career home run, tying him with Ted Williams and Willie McCovey on the All-Time home run list (and if Frank Thomas ends where he is currently, him too). But that game was VERY special for me in my collecting life.

If any of you recall, Manny hit a ground rule double in the 6th inning, the infamous "Justin Upton lost-in-the-sun" GRD? That ball hit the warning track, bounced right over the fence, and into my left hand.

But the REAL story is why I was standing over there in the first place. I was talking to the guard on the steps in right field bleachers in an attempt to have him intercept the Dodger brass who had just escorted off the young boy (and his family/friends) who had just caught Manny's home run #521 in the 5th inning. I was sitting in the left field bleachers when Manny hit the lazer to right. It's a great story.....another thread, another time. But while I was attempting to get to the family so I could offer them serious cash for that ball, Manny hit that ground rule double......RIGHT into my lap.

That ball ALSO gave Manny 100 RBI for the season on the NOSE when he touched home plate. That was his (historic) 12th season with at least 100 RBI, placing him second only to Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig (I believe) who sit alone in first place on the All-Time 100 RBI seasons with 13 each.....

Eventually, I was able to go toe to toe (with the help of the boy's mother who escourted me back to the Public Relations office the very next day, Sunday) with the Vice President of Public Relations of the Dodgers, and they gave the home run ball, in my presence....our of their archieve vault.....back to the family, who them sold it to ME!!:D

So....I have a VERY historic home run ball, and BOTH baseballs that represent ALL 5 of Manny Ramirez's RBI for the very game that propelled the Dodgers into first place over the (previously first place) Arizona Diamondbacks. AND......Manny hit that 3-run lazer shot homer off of Arizona's ACE, Brandon Webb!

So, how cool would it be to own Manny's jersey from that day????? To me, it would be my white whale, for SURE!

One can dream.......

2nd on my list would be the bat he used that game.;)

any Notre Dame game worn jersey from the following games: 1992 sugar bowl, 2005 game against USC, and 1995 fiesta bowl

historically, I have seen one real 1992 sugar bowl jersey about 6 years ago that I lost out on (still mad at myself to this day); I have seen one team issued (backup) jersey from the 1995 fiesta bowl but never a gamer; I have seen one team issued (backup) jersey from the 2005 game against USC but never a gamer

*if you wonder how I knew they were team issued jerseys - they were the jersey number of corresponding star of the team who each played extensively in these games, yet the jerseys had absolutely zero evidence of use (which is not possible)

just wondering if everyone list are items they know where it is located and are actively trying obtain it. i think thats different than an item that you have on your want list that you still havent located and don't know who the owner is.

i guess i just want to hear stories of struggle(s) of getting a hold of an item like the story of the original poster.

Joel -

I'll agree with that analogy... although both are items with undisclosed locations...

I would say a Holy Grail is an item you want, but have no idea of the location or where to begin - after all King Arthur and his Knights never located the Grail...

On the other hand, a White Whale - named for Moby Dick as stated earlier - should be an item you want and you have a general idea of where to begin searching and ultimately the item will surface (no Moby Dick pun intended) as Ahab eventually did find the Great White Beast...

That said, I guess two of the three of mine are actually Holy Grail quests - The Holliday 'Slide' jersey and the Ryan 'Blood' jersey...

I actually obtained one of my White Whales last year a

does it have anything to do with this?

Ryan Is Sued Over a Show of Hands (1992)

A Harris County couple has filed a lawsuit against Texas Rangers pitcher NOLAN RYAN charging that he breached a contract that gave their business the exclusive right to sell likenesses of his hands. The lawsuit, filed by Bronze Memories Inc., and its owners, ROY and BERNADETTE CHAMPIOMONT of Katy, Tex., names Ryan, MATT MEROLA and Mattgo Enterprises, as defendants.

The lawsuit alleges that the former Houston Astros pitcher signed a contract with Bronze Memories in June 1989, giving the bronze-art business the exclusive rights to manufacture and market bronze or other nonphotographic reproductions of the pitcher's hands, according to court records. (AP)

Joel -

I actually won it on an eBay auction and the seller included the original bill of sale from Bronze memories.

Now I'm not familiar with the law suit you mentioned but I did do some research after it came in and found this site:

http://www.bronzememories.com/nolan1.htm

Where they still sell the hands. Now, my question comes up - especially with the law suit - that these were supposed to be a Limited Edition and if memory serves in 1990 sometime they said the print run was Sold Out and the molds had been destroyed... but here they are - Bronze Memories - still selling them. Their site now claims that as of 4/28/97 a total of 934 castings had been made and 140 were still available.

I still can't complain though - Style 'A' like mine is still $1,200 on their website... I picked it up for just over $400 including shipping!!!

Rumor was it disappeared.

Mike "Nationals2K9" put me in touch with someone with the Rangers and I got the next best thing which was the same Louisville Slugger that Josh used in a game that season (2008) and it was cracked and MLB hologram'd.

Being a die-hard Blue Jays fan I'd have to say:

1. the bat Alomar used to hit his homerun off of against Dennis Eckersley in the 1992 ALCS. I'd say this is the second biggest hit in Blue Jays history, next to, of course Carter's 1993 WS winner.

2. the jersey that Dave Steib wore on Sept. 20 1990 (no-hitter).

I would never want to own anything quite that morbid...unless the possibility of torturing the Unit with it existed.

Do you think he'd sign it with the wrong pen, in a place the the sig would be hard to get to? Say, under the wing? I am imagining him looking at you (again) and saying..."where'd you GET that?"

Then you pull out an 8x10 and start photomatching it.

Jim Craig game used olympic goalie stick, Bob Owen (1960 olympic team) stick and the puck which was the "own goal" that Ottawa scored on themselves giving Travis Moen the GWG in the 2007 Stanley Cup finals.

My White Whale , I guess would be A Pair of Vernon Wells Game Used Cleats with MLB Hologram. I have only seen 1 pair for sale and that was in 2005 on a Jays/MLB online auction. They SOLD for $170 to MLB screen name Xristos M . So I have a General Idea of where they may be , but cant locate this guy. Maybe they have been sold or traded since then.

My Holy Grail so to speak would be 1 of Gregg Zauns game used Hockey Style Catcher Helmet/Mask. I Loved how he had his Customed Painted.

My white whale has become a game used Jimmy Rollins jersey. I have bought and returned 3 different jerseys after discovering inconsistencies with the jerseys and/or team letters once I got them in person. There are seemingly lots of Rollins jerseys out there but not all of them are what they seem to be at least to me.

I just had a good lead on a "legit" Rollins jersey with the help of a forum member but the seller this morning indicated it was no longer available for undisclosed reasons.

If anyone out there knows of an available Rollins gamer I got my harpoon ready...

Sincerely,
Captain Ahab

My white whale would have to be

1 - a full Rafael Palmeiro MLB uniform from one or more games that can be photomatched to a homerun. I know, will never happen :(

or

2 - a full NFL uniform

or

3 - a full NBA uniform (jersey, shorts, sneakers) of Gallinari

#3 is more than likely the most obtainable goal.

A Rod Woodson Steelers Jersey or shoes. AMI has had a few Woodson jerseys. Lealands had a complete jersey and shoes signed by Woodson at the Nationals in 2009. They never made it to auction due to the customer taking the items back. Would love to have own the shoes...

Kevin Greene and Greg Lloyd Steelers jerseys.

Any Hines Ward items.

The above items are out there and could happen in my price range. Holy grails and dreams are another story...

Glad to see this thread 'resurface' (pun INTENDED)... ;)

While not on my original list, I have obtained THREE pieces that could be White Whales or Holy Grails for various collector's and consider myself very fortunate that I was in a position to obtain each one when they became available over this past year...

#1: Jason Giambi GU - 1st Rockies Jersey (Photo matched) to his Sept 1, 2009 debut and Sept 2, 2009 at bats for the Rockies vs the Mets.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Memorabilia/Jerseys/GiambiGU091.jpg

#2: Eric Young Jr GU - 1st (and still ONLY) MLB Homerun Jersey (Photo matched) to his Sept 8th, 2009 HR at bat (I retrieved his HR ball!).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Memorabilia/Jerseys/DSC05226.jpg

#3 Mike McKenry GU - MLB Debut Jersey (Photo matched) to his Sept 8, 2010 1st MLB at bat (I have been following Mike through the Minor Leagues)... in fact, I had Mike sign my MLB Catcher's Mitt (about 60 sigs on it so far) at ST and he was the 1st person I had sign it who had not yet made it onto an MLB Roster at the time they signed it as I was certain he would make the Big Club before the end of the season.
