Possible Ohio State Wool Football Gamers, Help

    Hey All,

I've never dealt with anything of this vintage before, and am really curious what exactly they are.

The first is a circa 1910-1920's spalding tag wool football jersey. It was very common for teams to only have numbers on the back during this era, take a peak at the tagging and long cuffing, really old stuff.

The second jersey is probably a mid to late 1930's Lowe and Campbell tagged shirt, with some nice mid section repair markings, and nice bright vivid coloring. I cannot for the life of me find any archive that goes back this early in buckeyes history to even see if the styles match.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    DX.

We've sold vintage generic dureen's and such to american eagle, abercrombie and polo before.

      Interesting you said that...

They buy a ton of vintage sports clothing, for patina, styling and sometimes tagging.

Really nice jerseys. I did some quick research...but no luck. You probably found the same photos. OSU jerseys from the 20s had "friction" strips on front.
I have a tough time finding photos from the 50s and 60s. Much less turn of the century stuff. Maybe from another college or high school, nearly impossible to say for sure. If all members of this forum helped research, of course that would help. You should mention steroids or Manny or Steiner, then you may attract more interest. You're from Canada, right? You and cjw start the best threads about your unknown finds. I think I have met your associates in L.A. Maybe once a month in the Fall. Is this correct? Please don't reveal the location. Anyway, nice shirts.

          Hi DX,

I looked through Jack Park's "The Ohio State Football Encyclopedia" (over 650 pages and hundreds of pictures) and couldn't find OSU wearing either of those styles.

            Both Teams,

Yeah, that's my business partners. Very interesting shirts, and I haven't a clue where to start. Did get some help from buckeyegamers today, thanks Gary. I was directed to a guy that has co-authored two or three books on the history of the red and grey, but yeah, I didn't find anything even close in the years from 1915-1930, looked like the buckeyes wore the friction stripes almost every year back then, and then switched to an all red jersey, I can only presume, because the photos are black and white.

Regardless of being able to style match, I'm pretty stoked on them, definitely my oldest jerseys. Both Teams, do you know if the white Lowe and Campbell tag is after or before the production of there black one?

Most white tags are earlier, but finding information on them is very difficult because they became a subsidiary and collapsed under Wilson in the early 40's.

            DX.

I have always thought the white tag is from the 40s or early 50s and is more recent than the black variation.
