I just won a 2008 Red Sox Paul Byrd white jersey. It was listed as "end of the season". When I opened it up I was surprised to see much of the entire jersey had yellow staining (front, back, neck- everywhere). This isn't like washed out grass stains, or dirt stains- these stains are yellow- like pee yellow. The size tag is also stained yellow. Also the left sleeve has weird dark marks that look more like they should belong on a hockey jersey (very stick-mark-esq). Any ideas on what is going on with this jersey??? Photos from Byrd's playoff appearances do not show any staining on his jersey- so maybe the staining is from the beer and champagne showers when they wrapped up a playoff spot?? (and another jersey was used during ther playoffs?). 1 other odd thing: there is no year or number tagging on the front- just the "48". Why would the front tagging be missing the usual info?

The pictures aren't all that clear, but you can get a good idea of what I'm talking about. I will try to post them in this post too- below. If anytone out there has any input on what the yellow or dark staining is from, and the tagging issue, I greatly appreciate it!

This was a Steiner auction by the way.

Maybe it's dried champagne/beer from clinching a playoff spot or something, since it's 'end of season'? Or maybe it got crumpled up somewhere and something spilled on it.

Not to get too weird, but do the stains smell like anything in particular?

The jersey doesn't really smell like booze or anything (not strongly at least- I have a head cold so I am not at 100% smelling ability :) ) I'm truly baffled at this point. I don't know whether to be happy about this purchase because it's unique, or if I should be upset because of the staining and lack of tagging....

I read that gatorade will leave stains on white jerseys too.

The lack of a strip tag likely is attributable to the jersey being made for a mid-season acquisition. A number of teams that use Majestic strip tagging may not have it on later-ordered jerseys...I have a 2003 Cubs Doug Glanville home with no collar strip tag and it was sourced from the Cubs. Glanville in 2003, like Byrd in 2008, was a mid-year acquisition.

Thanks for the strip tag info- that's good to know! The color of the staining does look similar to the color of the lemon/lime gatorade- but bow much of that would be flying around durning a celebration with booze? Does anyone know if the Red Sox used a different set for the post season? It would be great if MLB/Steiner had a tracking system like Meigray. With them- you know exactly when a jersey was worn!

I have a Papelbon Jersey from 2008 from Steiner and it has some yellowing exactly like yours. I was told it was from the Champaigne (spelling sucks) as some of the jersey's where not properly cleaned after the Angels series. I hope that helps.

notice the brownish/yellowish color raining on Big Papi.

Thanks for the info! "Not properly cleaned" is an understatment! Glad to hear this shirt's not a fluke.

I thought it was DNA proof. If it is at least there no doubt it's authentic.:p
