Just a little more than 24 hours after the new Yankee Stadium made its historic regular-season opening, the ballpark is already a part of Cooperstown.
On Friday, Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson acquired the following items from the first regular-season game at the new Cathedral, played between the Yankees and Indians -- the bat used by Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore to hit the new Stadium's first grand slam, a game-used commemorative Opening Day baseball signed by winning pitcher Cliff Lee and the spikes worn by Yankees starter CC Sabathia.
Artifacts from the inaugural game at the new Yankee Stadium, as well as the first regular-season game at Citi Field, are scheduled to be on display by the end of April in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's "Today's Game" exhibit.
On Monday night, Padres outfielder Jody Gerut donated the bat he used to hit the first home run at Citi Field. The Museum also received the ceremonial first-pitch ball, signed by Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver and former Mets catcher Mike Piazza, along with dirt from the batter's box. The new additions will join 35,000 other items at the Museum, which will look to add artifacts from other historic moments throughout the season.
