Dodgers break 90 year old Record

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Things are going so well for the Dodgers in their ballpark, they set a National League record for home wins from the start of a season despite going 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position and hitting into a triple play.
Los Angeles became the first NL club since 1900 to win its first 11 home games, beating the Arizona Diamondbacks (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/ari/;_ylt=ApqJo7.yt7wkuGsAj1c_0Oe4u7YF) 7-2 Monday night with a homer and three RBIs from Manny Ramirez (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5132/;_ylt=Aqz8fLe88jiFD504QspuLfi4u7YF)http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/sp/fn/default/full/p_note.gif (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5132/news;_ylt=AhaaNOzet37kgcsrFryM8564u7YF).
“I’m certainly not anxious to leave here, especially with the success we’ve had at home,” manager Joe Torre said with six games remaining on the 11-game homestand.
The defending NL West champions broke the previous league record for longest home winning streak to start a season, set by the 1918 New York Giants (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nyg/;_ylt=AgJ6Xsj1zJR9.f6kMBGU7IK4u7YF) and equaled by the 1970 Chicago Cubs (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/chc/;_ylt=AuVItcJna8khUd6JTOBdJPW4u7YF) and 1983 Atlanta Braves (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/atl/;_ylt=Arv15hqyvGnb528oWLkPOWO4u7YF)—who were managed by Torre.

“It’s sweet. We just have to keep adding on now,” catcher Russell Martin (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7628/;_ylt=Am2fu1kcen9Ys8EIOHY5CjW4u7YF)http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/sp/fn/default/full/p_note.gif (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7628/news;_ylt=AhS9stBHMgKqTOOmbl_OsWW4u7YF) said. “We’re still playing good baseball and we’ve been playing solid defense. You’re not going to have everything every night, and tonight our pitching took care of a lot.”
The Dodgers are the first team to start a season 11-0 at home since the 2003 Kansas City Royals (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/kan/;_ylt=Aoj9y62E6shkNmtKHR0eB5S4u7YF). The major league mark is 12, set in 1911 by the Detroit Tigers (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/det/).
The best 11-game home start Torre had during his 12 seasons managing the Yankees was 10-1, with the 1998 and 1999 teams. That ’98 World Series championship squad was 33-6 at home at the All-Star break—including a win over the Angels at Shea Stadium after Yankee Stadium was closed for two days due to unsafe conditions caused by a fallen expansion joint from the upper deck.
“Streaks are fine, but each game takes on a life of its own for me,” Torre said. “I mean, you constantly remind the players that they really haven’t done anything—and don’t think that because you’ve won every game at home, it’s going to automatically be willed to you.
“The thing I’m proud about is that we played with a lot of energy and resolve tonight. This ballclub didn’t come in here expecting to automatically win a ballgame. There’s no shortcut. You have to go out and work and be ready to play. And this club has been good at doing that.”
The Dodgers are a big league-best 19-8 overall, their best start since Tommy Lasorda’s 1983 club opened 20-7.
Eric Stults (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7869/;_ylt=ApGBJSMpBPYGDyDpphfoeRC4u7YF)http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/sp/fn/default/full/p_note.gif (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7869/news;_ylt=AvEofmkOjShmesZE4agxHdi4u7YF) (3-1) allowed two runs and five hits over 5 2-3 innings and struck out four, after lasting only 2 2-3 innings Wednesday at San Francisco.
“I know that we have a great roll going here, and it seems like we’re a team that likes to play at home,” Stults said. “It’s great to get a little part of history like that. It’s a lot of fun when you’re winning ballgames.”
Arizona shortstop Josh Wilson (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7663/;_ylt=AjXFBwVveIBzjCk2.lZnIze4u7YF)http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/sp/fn/default/full/p_note.gif (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7663/news;_ylt=Ao.yUYo7w_TcjGrN_BMH8ZC4u7YF), making his third start this season in place of injured Stephen Drew (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7560/;_ylt=AtQMZLrwPEqX3Kr8inqN3Hi4u7YF)http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/sp/fn/default/full/p_note.gif (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7560/news;_ylt=An1sfYAioEZUOO3OF3VK89i4u7YF), bobbled Matt Kemp’s (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7780/;_ylt=Au9Q.IW6hMH5AGbRdhDx4yW4u7YF)http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/sp/fn/default/full/p_note.gif (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7780/news;_ylt=AueG5iJMqMEpS9Faq7ymDoe4u7YF) routine grounder for an error in his haste to start a double play in the second inning. But he made up for the mistake moments later, making a lunging catch of Casey Blake’s (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6310/;_ylt=AieXimRiNILipsl36lK7HN64u7YF)http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/sp/fn/default/full/p_note.gif (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6310/news;_ylt=AmFI3lQQMCxuS.MkU1DyAHu4u7YF) line drive in the hole with the runners going and turning it into the second triple play in Diamondbacks history.
“That’s definitely a rarity, and to be a part of one is something special,” Wilson said. “I knew the runners were moving, and the ball almost came out of my glove, so I was just making sure I held onto it first. And once I did, I knew we were going to get three outs.”

The Dodgers are for real......and then some.

They score runs in their sleep.

They aren't even hitting on all cylinders yet, and still need a quality starter (or two), and are still beating teams handily.

The Boston Manny haters sure went away in a hurry.........what happened to all of the "Wait and see until Manny gets his money.....he'll roll over and die on the Dodgers".

FurGET ABOWWWW 'DIT......it was never going to happen. Manny wants to win another ring. And I missed catching his home run by 4 rows last night.....

I would also like to thank The beloved Red Sox's for giving up and then giving us Mannywood. I would also like to thank the Yankees for disgracing themselves and giving up on Joe Torre. Man, two clubs giving up on two surefire hall of famers. Gotta love it. Our young players are growing up fast and having them teach the young guys is great to see.

Orlando Hudson was one of the steals of free agency. If all he does is his usual thing and bats around .300 he's a good pickup. If he keeps things up he's a all-star.

Guys like that are the difference between a good team and a great team.

The Dodgers were great with fans when they trained at Vero Beach. Last year, only two weeks before they moved to Arizona, my wife and I got numerous dodgers, including Torre, Ethier, Martin, and others; and they were all friendly.

I meant we got their autographs. Ironically the most difficult famous Dodger to get to sign is Lasorda, although he seems to have little to do except sit around looking like Lasorda. About two-thirds of spring-training games, he refuses to sign for anyone; and then only for women and children when he does sign.

If the Dodgers can break a sport record of over 90 years, maybe there's hope for my Cubbies and their 101-year title drought.:)

Yeah, and maybe Barack Obama and Rush Limbaugh will become best friends forever.:p

Did you SEE the two great plays Orlando made last night???

Basically, he slammed the door on any possible rally the Diamondbacks were mounting......with two feet-leaving dives to make inning killing catches. I didn't see Sports Center last night, or this morning, but I'm sure BOTH plays were on/in the top ten.....maybe combined to be the #1 of the day?

Anybody see them?

By the way gang,

NOW the Dodgers have TIED AN 98-YEAR OLD RECORD with their win last night...

They tied the 1911 Detroit Tigers....who had none other than Ty Cobb on the roster.....with the most victories at home to start off any season in MLB history....

By the way.....that guy named Cobb? He hit a mere .420 that season.

Just AWESOME. Tonight they go for the record outright. GO DODGERS!!!!

If we count the first 24 years of Major League Baseball, the Dodgers are actually chasing (who'd have guessed) the Chicago Cubs' record; of course, they were known as the White Stockings back then...

Longest winning streak at home, beginning of season
21: Chicago White Stockings (Cubs), 1880.
18: Detroit Wolverines, 1886.
16: St. Louis Maroons, 1884.
14: Chicago White Stockings (Cubs), 1885.
12: New York Gothams (SF Giants), 1884.
12: Detroit Tigers, 1911.
12: Los Angeles Dodgers, 2009.

Just back from the game....

We have a NEW MODERN ERA RECORD in MLB folks....(since 1900)

13 straight victories at home to start a season by my DODGERS!!!!!:)

Broke the record of the Detroit Tigers, with Sam Crawford and Ty Cobb, of 1911 with 12.

Once again, they have a mediocre game, and score 10 RUNS.....with a properly placed extra hit or two, maybe just ONE home run (they had none for the game), the Dodgers could've easily scored 20. This team is scarey, but I don't want to jinx the early success. Hope they go all the way to the 21 game reacord of ALL time (posted by treant985).

I'll be hanging on to my ticket stub for quite awhile.
