View Full Version : OT: Game Used Oddities....

given the amount of time we spend checking for inconsistencies in items presented as "game used", i thought it would be fun to take a look at "authentic inconsistencies". this thought occurred to me after i emailed my pal a circa '60s photo of a detroit lions player - not only is my pal a die hard lions fan, but he's also a vintage football helmet aficionado, actually he's a vintage football uniform aficionado. anyway i thought he would find it interesting that the helmet was fitted with a "dallas cowboys style" dymo tape, something the lions were not known to have worn. not only did he find this very interesting, but he also pointed out what i had failed to notice given my one dimensional focus on all things helmets - the backwards "31" on the player's left sleeve...

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y238/aeneas1/zfun02.jpg

so keeping with this spirit i thought it would be interesting to post other uniform oddities. i also wondered what we would think of these game used items if we saw them at auction - would we recognize them as "authentic inconsistencies" or would we immediately suspect foul play? hmmm... anyway, if you happen to have any similar photos please add them!

top photo: a kansas player sans decals... bottom photos: the 49ers sporting a mishmash look, some helmets have a center stripe, some don't, pant leg stripes vary as well...

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y238/aeneas1/zfun12.jpg

left: the rams still sporting yellow in their color scheme (cap, sideline cape, etc.) even after switching to blue and white uniforms, middle: the packers sporting navy blue, right: lamonica donning an extra decal.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y238/aeneas1/zfun05.jpg

left: a facemask that you don't see every day, if ever, middle: a spartan player (number 41) sporting a "0" on his helmet, right: a number scribbled on the front of the helmet instead of the back.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y238/aeneas1/zfun03.jpg

left and middle: i thought these two photos were interesting because the star college players appearing in the bob hope special brought their own, actual, game used helmets with them instead of replicas or "standard issues", right: steelers player getting ready for a game against the redskins - i thought the helmet on top of the locker might be a short-lived steelers color scheme but the friend i mentioned earlier suggested that it was a university of pittsburgh helmet given that the steelers shared pitt stadium with the panthers in the mid to late '60s - and he was right!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y238/aeneas1/zfun06.jpg

and here are some outstanding photos found at the tremendous site "uniwatch". unbelievable jersey typos:

nob typos and a stanley cup typo:

less than centered nameplates:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y238/aeneas1/zfun09.jpg

full names, first initial at the end of the last name, widely spaced lettering and a little reverse lettering to boot:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y238/aeneas1/zfun10.jpg

here's a really interesting shot: the vikes decided to wear their away uniforms at home but the lions either didn't care or weren't on the same page - as such, both teams started the game sporting white jerseys. the vikes eventually changed into their home jerseys on the sideline, but not their home pants, resulting in a very, very purple look:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y238/aeneas1/zfun04.jpg

the giants sporting different pants, the 49ers sporting shirts without stripes or numbers and, for the heck of it, a great vintage shot of both sayers and butkus playing special teams - can you imagine having to worry about stopping sayers on a kickoff AND avoiding butkus? mama mia....

This is from a playoff game in 1978 between the Washington Bullets and the San Antonio Spurs (when the Spurs were in the Eastern Conference).
Mike Gale, Spurs guard, either lost his own jersey or it was lost by the airlines (this is when it was the players' responsibility to keep up with their jersey.) The San Antonio trainer/equipment manager did not have an extra jersey for Gale to wear. So what did they resort to? Simple. They borrowed a road blue Bullets jersey from the Washington equipment manager and they "flipped" it inside out. Wonder if this is when Gale was given the nickname "Flipper"? The ensemble is complete with Bullets shorts with stars down the sides. It's funny 'cause its real.

Very cool thread, I love the Spurs vs. Bullets story and pics! This is just one of the dozens of Jets uni anomolies I have cataloged: from the 1965 Jets vs Raiders game at Shea - Dave Herman rockin a no logo Jets helmet. I hope folks keep adding to this thread, should be a fun one. Happy collecting to all and GO JETS!

I'm hoping that the guy who has this jersey see's this. About 5 months ago, I was emailed by a guy who thought I would be interested in knowing that he had this jersey. It wasn't disposed of but sold at Fan Fest. I'll have to see if I can find the pictures he sent. I tried to buy/trade but he wasn't interested in getting rid of it yet. He found me through this site so maybe he will pipe in.

Actually Robert/Aeneas01, I think besides that 1964 Lions v. Vikings game that you posted photos of in which the Vikings wore all purple (purple pants and jerseys), to my knowledge the Vikings have only worn purple on purple (purple pants and jerseys) only one other time. Specifically, during a Monday night game against the Bears on December 17, 2007 (43 years after that 1964 game when they wore all purple on purple).

Reminds me so much of that classic Snickers comercial where the groundskeeper paints "Chefs" in the end-zone instead of "Chiefs"

OK, I know this doesn't really fit but it is late and I am getting a bit slap happy.

My uncle was widowed in his 80s - then remarried. The write-up in the local newspaper said they were married at "the Untied Lutheran Church in Frost, MN." (It was at United Lutheran.)

Nothing more newsworthy and wild than a bunch of "untied Lutherans!!!"

I have an 86' St. Louis Cardinals jersey worn by Lance Smith with his full name on the back. I'm assuming the pic of Leonard Smith is from the same season. Wonder why they didn't stop after La? and Le?

Every once in a while in the NHL, a goalie will be traded from one team to another mid-way through the season. As modern-day NHL goalies customize the color scheme of their pads/masks/equipment to match the team jersey/uniform colors, this often creates a problem when a goalie is playing for one team and then is suddenly traded to a new team and forced to play for that new team just a few days later... I can remember a few instances, such as when Roland Melanson was traded mid-season from the New York Islanders to the Minnesota North Stars in 1984 (couldn't find any photos of him from that time, but I remember him wearing Islanders blue/orange colored pads with his green/gold North Stars jersey). This happened again in 1989 when New York Islanders goalie Kelly Hrudey was traded mid-season from the New York Islanders to the Los Angeles Kings. See photos below of Kelly Hrudey wearing his New York Islanders pads and gloves, while wearing his new L.A. Kings jersey.

Here's a Jets game in 1965 - looks like none of the Jets players had Logos on their helmets. I guess the team had to do what they needed to do to get the team outfitted.

I can't believe no one posted this before me.

Michael Jordan wearing #12.

I can't remember the story behind it exactly, but I think Jordan's jersey was lost or stolen.

I have a perfect photo from this game from a Orlando Sentinel photog (need to scan it). My mom was at this game, and I also have some "mom-quality" photos. The jersey was stolen before the game from the locker room; obviously an inside job. The equipment manager walked through the crowd looking for an authentic replica. They were all too small. MJ wore an extra number 12 that the EM carried for such a circumstance.

That reminds me of the Bears a few years ago, with two T Johnsons...the NOBs were full names (Tank Johnson and Todd Johnson).

Randy Moss originally wore #18 on his jersey during the pre-season of his Rookie year with the Vikings, before he switched to his famous #84. Similarly, Duante Culpepper wore #12 on his jersey during the pre-season of his Rookie year with the Vikings, before he switched to his famous #11 (I think because #11 made him look more slender).

Finally found a photo of NHL goalie Roland Melanson playing for the Minnesota North Stars (in 1984) where he was wearing a green and gold North Stars uniform, yet he was wearing orange and blue colored pads and using an orange and blue goalie stick which were the colors of his former team, the New York Islanders.

In 2009, Joe Torre wore a Cardinals helmet while coaching first base. He played for St. Louis from 1969-1974 & managed them from 1990-1995.

In 2009, Roy Halladay batted with the helmet of Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays for his at-bat. The Rays' logo had been removed from the front of the helmet, but it was still identifiable due to its color and Longoria's number "3" on the back.

In 1975, the Oakland Athletics wore four different uniforms during the All-Star Game. Infielders Gene Tenace and Bert Campaneris wore yellow jerseys while outfielders Joe Rudi and Reggie Jackson and relief pitcher Rollie Fingers donned green ones. All five wore white pants. Pitcher Vida Blue's shirt and pants were both yellow. Dark and the coaching staff wore all-white uniforms, as did outfielder Claudell Washington.

What is most amazing about the backwards 31 on Amos Marsh's left shoulder, is he actually caught a hail mary pass from Milt Plum with 22 seconds left to win the game for Det in one of the most dramatic NFL finishes I can ever remember. I always thought the '31" was airbrushed in backwards in the photo. Hard to believe they would have sewn the number on backwards.

Pulling this thread back up. I previously posted on how NHL goalies are sometimes traded mid-season and suddenly are playing for a brand new team the day after, while still having the mask and pads featuring the color scheme from their previous team. NHL goalie Craig Anderson was traded from the Colorado Avalanche to the Ottawa Senators this season and wore his Colorado Avalance mask and pads for several games with the Ottawa Senators:
