Curious to know what folks think about this Bears suspension helmet that is for sale on Ebay. The "C" on the helmet looks too big, and the helmet size (7 1/8) seems rather small for a lineman's helmet... Also, I seem to remember seeing a helmet with a beat up Dungard mask for sale on Ebay about a year or two ago which looked very similar to the one on this helmet... Also, I think the Bears wore mostly Wilson brand helmets in the late 60's/early 70's. Nonetheless, even if this Bears helmet is not a real gamer (which I don't think it probably is), it is a neat looking replica....

Re: 1970 Bears Helmet with Dungard Mask
I browsed over this listing just last night......
The logo, however incorrect as you mentioned, is hand cut. Very hard to find these days unless you have a crafty hand. It is a very nice replica, but not worth the asking price.
Vintage stuff is not my expertise, but I do believe you are correct on the Wilson comment, as well as the size.
I would be willing to say that it is a legit oldie, but not a true Bears Gamer.

Guy, you are correct. I didn't even pay attention to the player. I guess I forgot to do my homework prior to my post, lol.
MODERATORS - PLEASE REMOVE MY LAST POST
Now, for the life of me I cannot find a clear side shot of a 1970 Bears helmet.
But still, I thought they had starting using orange on the logo towards the latter part of the 60's
Again, vintage isn't my thing. Maybe Helmets, or Aeneas, who knows more about this era, can correct me.Comment

1970s
In 1970, the players' names are added to the back of the jerseys.
Earlier in the decade, the stripes disappear from the navy 'home' jersey, but return after a couple of seasons. Likewise, the white 'road' jersey goes with block font numbers, but the classic rounded numerals return after a couple of seasons.
In 1973, the all-white 'C' on the helmet is changed to orange with a white border.
In 1979, after team president George 'Mugs' Halas, Jr. dies on the last day of the regular season, the team wears a black armband on the left jersey sleeve for a wild card playoff game. [Back to top]Comment

Did they have some sort of different dipping process for that era Dungard 140? I mean, it looks like it's simply painted metal.Comment
