Well not necessarily game used, the first item is a very rare 24" x 30" sign from 09/06/95 that hung inside the gates at Camden Yards the night that Cal passed Lou Gehrig. I suppose the Orioles didn't mention Cal by name to deter theft of these items, however I was able to get one from an Orioles employee and had Cal sign it...Other items is a signed, game issued bat from the 1995 All Star Game:

I havn't had a chance to post my most recent pick ups so june is as good a time as any. The first couple are 3 Buffalo Bisons game used hats belonging to Asdrubal Cabrera, Trevor Crowe, and Josh Barfield. The last one is my new favorite bat I picked up at the tribe team shop on saturday the 30th, and it is a Ryan Garko 125th anniversary bat, that is just loaded with tar and cracked. I think i have narrowed it's use down to a general time frame (april 23-28) but i am still trying to find high res pics so i can photomatch....Little help Kyle???

My first Edgar Martinez bat arrived this morning. It's a LVS M356 from 2000 with a slight crack and shows tons of use in the form of multiple ball marks and blue ink transfers, cleat marks, and ball stitch and donut impressions. Also has heavy pine tar with some amber drip clusters on the mid-upper handle. Auto'd and inscribed "gamer."

Sweet gamer!

Thanks! I've only acquired a couple more than a handful since I caught the bug last year, but this one and the Boggs I got from Andy Benish rank as my favorites with respect to game use.

Not game used (yet).

I got a Marucci bat with my name on it. (David Wright model)

I'm attending a baseball camp in July for the first time ever. This is going to be fun seeing how a bat will go from unused to used. Going to order some Healthy Horse Pine tar (the same brand Jorge Posada uses) and load this bat up.

No pics (sorry:( ), but some pickups from last night's White Sox-Athletics game at the Cell:
1) 2 foul balls, 1 BP and 1 game (the game being Vin Mazzaro's 1st MLB game, start win, and combined shutout)
2) A game-used BP cap given to me by A's coach Tye Waller.

Not a bad night.:D

Not a silly question at all. These seatbacks are from Steiner and they just came in.

I too ordered full seats and signs. I believe the full seats are going to start shipping in July.

I think the signs should be shipping soon as the were listed as in stock.

I was watching that auction but the fact that the card the seller was using to verify Michael wore this style of glove wasn't even the same style of glove the seller was selling was a red flag to me. But if they are real you got a steal.

Personally, I'll use it simply for display purposes with my other memorabilia from Memorial Stadium (seats, signage, etc.). I spent a lot of time at that ballpark and have a lot of fond memories.

Hey Tom!

Thanks for the reply!....I actually orderered a seat BACK not an actual seat! I realized after the post I typed it in wrong....

I placed the order almost 4 weeks ago and emailed Brett two weeks ago today asking him what the deal was. He told me I should have it within 7 days, but its been two weeks and nada!...I will email him again today...there are times when they can be REAL SLOW and other times where you get the item within 3 business days...

In addition to the seat back, I got the "Be Alert Fouls Balls" sign and "Interfering With Players Is....." sign.....

How about you?

I have dreamed of owning a Derek Jeter game used jersey since I started collecting and I finally have one. This is the jersey Derek wore for the opening game of the 2009 Spring training season, photo day in Tamapa, and for the first two games vs. the Cubs every played at the New Yankee Stadium. Jeter had the first reordered Yankee hit ever at the new Stadium. Have found over 40 photos that match the jersey perfectly!

A couple of good, cheap items....

A Chris Duncan 1999 M110 - that is likely from his first season in professional baseball at Johnson City. GREAT early Dunc - with typical heavy tar...as you can see, I am in the process of repairing a crack thru the label.

Next is a set of 2002 Darryl Kile remembrance wrist bands. These were made by Rawlings for the Cardinals after Darryl passed away during a Chicago series...I have only seen one other pair, and have been patiently waiting for another to hit the market.

Just got this in today, special thanks to fellow forum member Rich, for a flawless trade.

Dustin Pedroia game used home jersey from his 2008 A.L. MVP season.

The jersey shows some really nice game use with, puckering to the numbers, some loose threads on the outside and inside of the jersey, heavily worn interior wash tag and what looks like a dirt stain that has been previously washed. The jersey is also MLB and Steiner authenticated.

Thanks, Bobby

I got this on Wednesday...the first Gerardo Parra bat I've seen.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9d824b3127ccec71e9900391a00000040O02EbsmzVu0ZA9 vPhw/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

It has an elaborate tape job, a clean (now repaired) handle break, and some nasty pine tar with a bit of grass stuck in it.

Parra was just announced as the NL Rookie of the Month for May. He hit a home run his first AB in the majors, and is hitting something like .700 with runners in scoring position.

I think Gameusedfan1 = Vipsportgems = Sheffield11. Maybe?

I think so too, and I also think it was an attempt to draw attention to items that obviously cannot be sold on this forum... These items were not picked up to be added to one's collection; they were picked up to turn a quick buck... which is not the purpose of the pickups thread. Folks like myself have $500+ items we too wish to sell here but don't because we follow the rules.

Yeah, I just looked at that...though I'm at a loss to understand how Dunn could have used the bat in '09, as stated in the auction description, since he was only with the Diamondbacks for the latter part of '08, and Parra didn't get the call-up till this year...and why, if the bat was used in '09, the DBacks would be issuing a LOA and not the Nats.

Anyone know how to contact MLB Auctions with a question about one of their items? I've looked in vain for a link on the auction page.

I just made my first bulk purchase and did so with a few buddies. Of course the question came up why I was buying seven jerseys? I just responded that the prices were great (which they were) but really it was the opportunity to add Team USA styles that I was missing, sleeve patches, etc. The items I was most excited to add were the vest styles from 1995 & 96. Prior to this purchase I had 27 Team USA GU jerseys and had NEVER seen a vest available for sale and was able to add three. Highlights include:

1995 vest of former White Sox and Expos pitcher Rocky Biddle
1996 vest and undershirt of coach Ray Tanner (possibly Olympic worn)
1991 national team jersey of Steve Leshnock
1995 vest of coach Rich Alday
Jerseys with patches including 1994 Topps, 1997 Junior World Championships, United State Baseball Federation and "Baseball USA".

Today at the Cell was a blast! As usual, I made my trade of goodies with Tribe coach Joel Skinner, and got a bat that, to say the least, was unusual to find in the Cleveland discards...a brown Marucci bat of OF Nyjer Morgan (from a previous interleague series). Crack wasn't too severe, so I'm happy right there. But (and you knew there'd be a "but")...it was cleanup day for pregame baseballs. I found one in an empty seat, another rolled within reach by the wall near the dugout, and two members of the staff (Skinner and bullpen catcher Dan Williams) tossed me BP baseballs. The two from the field staff were intriguing, as they were final season Metrodome baseballs from their previous stop in Minneapolis (must've gotten mixed into the Indians' BP bucket). Skinner's gift was a straight BP ball, while the one from Williams was originally a game ball with an obvious mud rub. I may let the BP Twins ball go, but the other stuff stays put.:D

I was watching that auction but the fact that the card the seller was using to verify Michael wore this style of glove wasn't even the same style of glove the seller was selling was a red flag to me. But if they are real you got a steal.

he was using that picture as a reference, he wasn't saying they were the actual pair. he sent me a personal guarantee and actual pictures of him in the Baron's locker room. there's one picture he did not put on his auction that he sent to me that shows all of jordan's IX baseball cleats in MJ's locker room. they're authentic.

Caught both of these balls during batting practice at todays Yankees game.

The ball on the left was hit by Derek Jeter and caught by Jose Moline who then threw it to me.

The ball on the right was hit by Jorge Posada and then used as a warm up ball by Mariano Rivera and Phil Coke. Phil threw it to me when he was done, and I had Phil sign it. I asked him what pitch he was working with Mo on. He said it was a slider that Mo learned from Mel Stottlemyre. Pretty neat.

So Saturday I get a text message from GUU member MarkFD that he needs Elijah Dukes HR bat from the game he went 3-4 with a HR and one of the craziest double plays (ESPN WebGem) you will ever see.

I then sent a text to Elijah who texted me back after the game and said done deal. We met 2 blocks from the stadium after yesterday's game (YES in the McDonald's parking lot!!!)

3 or 4 years ago, I went to a Mariano signing at Last Licks (Steiner) in New York. I paid for an inscription and when I got up to Mo and asked him to add 2005 Game Used to my Jersey, which I showed him the Steiner LOA, he said he was not allowed. I was pretty bummed, but rather than get my money back, I had him add "Last to wear 42". Other than that, he was great, super nice guy!

I don't mean to stick my nose in here, but each player is issued 2 of these shirts. They wear them for workout day, the HR derby, and batting practice the day of the game. It stands to reason that Reyes may have worn both of the 2 issued to him. That means calling this a photomatch may not be completely accurate. I know Andrew Lang has an Alfonso Soriano BP shirt from 2006 with MLB holo listed in the database as game used, and I think you know about the other. So although he is also in the photo you posted with the Reyes photomatch, without a stain, pulled threads, etc calling Drew's shirt a match may also be a stretch.

I have to agree with what is being said....not exactly about the Reyes, but about photo matching in general.

I see a TON of style matching being called "photo matched". Maybe I'm a bit more picky than most...but without an exact pulled thread, stain, dirt..etc I don't see many photo matched jerseys.

Bu then again, I'm green. Maybe my views will change overtime. I doubt ti though. I'm stubborn :D

I see the black piping of the neck in some kind of stylized curve, but I do not see a photo match, only a style match. Can you elaborate on the photo match?

Gameusedfan1
06-09-2009, 09:16 PM
The curve matches the one in the photo where it overlaps, and if you line up the NATIONAL with the Neck Line You can see that they both line up at the beginning of the I.

That's the sort of thinking I refered to in my 1st post on this subject matter.

Who's to say the other jersey issued to Reyes doesn't match up identically....in regards to the neckline. It makes for a good style match, but calling it a photo match is a bit of a stretch.

Just my opinion.

As it's already been mentioned, each player is issued 2 jerseys for AS weekend. Based on your photo evidence, there is no way for you to definitively state that Reyes wore this particular jersey the entire AS weekend, through all fielding practices, all batting practices and even the HR Derby......as you do in your auction.

That's not only a bit presuptuous but quite misleading to any and all potential bidders. IMHO.

Honestly my jersey shows use, smells like sweat, and has pulled threads. It was definitely used by reyes and I personally feel that the pictures shown are a perfect match for it. Its up to the person of interest to decide for themselves but thats my opinion. Also I plan on keeping the jersey unless I get a good offer for it, I dont post all my items on here, just ones I would keep. I love my jersey. Now lets not waste anymore threads with this and lets see some more great june pick ups.

So although he is also in the photo you posted with the Reyes photomatch, without a stain, pulled threads, etc calling Drew's shirt a match may also be a stretch.

mark

Mark - I would think some players could get issued more than 2 BP's as I have seen family wearing them too. I saw Mariano Rivera and his kids wearing the exact same jersey so I think it would come down to sizing also.

Hey guys, don't want to sound like a whiner, but I think a few would agree with me here, if your going to question another members item, why not open a a new thread and hash it out there. Would be nice to keep this open for only June pick-ups!

Thanks, Bobby

Bobby, no problem. I should point out that these issues regarding Gameusedfan1 (or whatever he's calling himself today) were brought up much earlier in this thread, long before Mr.3000 and I decided to ask why nothing has been done about the list of issues raised.

With this said, you know me well enough from the boards to know that I have no interest in derailing threads, especially one that is as joyful as a pick-ups thread. So no worries. I look forward to seeing more June pick-ups.

I don't see the match. The part it appears you are trying to match is the portion below the YPX logo on the backside of the barrel, but the picture of your bat doesn't even show that portion of the bat. There are also some pretty distinct blue marks on top of the TPX logo in the Jackie Robinson day picture that don't appear on your bat. Am I missing something/looking at it incorrectly? Ricardo

That ball mark on the back side of where the trademark is gives you a nice match and a lot more ball marks added after that. That gives the visualization of "in on the hands" of a batter!

I won the Pete Rose 1978 Tour of Japan Uniform. I came close to not bidding on this because I wasn’t sure about the jersey tag.

The COA comes from Sports Investments Inc. These are the same people I bought the Rose gambling check from. The really are authorities when it comes to anything Reds. I gave them a call and they gave me some great background information about the jersey and they also let me know they didn't consign this uniform to Lelands. If you ever need to know anything about Reds memorabilia call these guys. I spoke with Adam Wolter and he's a wealth of information. Their father bought the ball and bat from Rose that broke Cobb's record and various other unique items.

Also, I was searching the forum because I wanted to learn more about the tagging issues with the Reds jerseys. Below was a extremely helpful post from Rudy a few years ago. THANK YOU RUDY!!!!! After reading the post below I finally made up my mind to bid on this lot.

Although it's not a MLB game used, it's has to be one of the most unique Rose jersey's.

I've also attached a few more pics from some 1978 programs I purchased about the tour. Who knows, might even be able to photo match this thing.

Can anyone post a famous pic of Oh and some of the Reds players from one of the exhibition games?

Cincinnati Reds Uniforms from the 1980s

December 11 2007 at 2:37 PMDave Grob

In response to an e-mail question about Cincinnati Reds uniforms from the 1980s, I offered this response.

"The Reds continued wearing Wilson road uniforms, something that began in 1968, throughout the decade of the 1980s. The only exception to this are the road uniforms worn in 1978 during the Tour of Japan. These were made by Rawlings as Rawlings was a sponsor of the tour. These road Tour of Japan uniforms feature a “R” on the exterior of the pants as well.

The home uniforms during the 1980s were manufactured by Rawlings, with the exception of 1985 and 1986. The 1985 and 1986 home uniforms were supplied by Goodman and Sons, and unlike their Wilson and Rawlings counterparts, are without any year or set identification. The Reds began wearing Rawlings uniforms in 1968, switching away from long time supplier MacGregor."

Here's my June Pickup. I got this one in early June and am just getting around to posting this up. Per BMH this is a pro quality game model (not pro model) Albert Pujols bat. This bat was NOT issued to Pujols, but was ordered by a LVS rep and given to a Sam Suplizio most likely as a gift. It is 34 inches in length and is fresh! As close as you can get to an actually issued bat of Pujols!

The 1st red alternate jersey I was able to get was promised to a great collector who has been looking for one for many years!

So I get a call after Sunday's game that Ryan's red jersey is ready to be picked up. I start thinking that the Nats wore red jerseys on the Randy Johnson 300 win game too so this could have some great history too if it can be photomatched to that game also.

To me, hockey goalie masks are the coolest item of all game-worn hockey equipment. The individdual design on many of them and the creativity that thought them up are fascinating. When Charlie O'Brien introduced the MLB goalie-style catcher's mask a bit over 10 years ago, I was hoping that MLB would display similar intriguing artwork Unfortunately, MLB poobahs stepped in and dictated that only a player number and the actual team logo (O'Brien originally had a snarling Blue Jay, not the official team logo on his) could appear on the mask.:(

Looks to be a style match. Impossible to tell if it's a photo match....UNLESS the hat was only worn one day. I'm jumping in on the tail end of this thread, without having read previous posts.

If it was worn only one day, then great job!

LastingsMilledge - Even if it was only worn for one day, it's not a photomatch unless you can show that the exact hat was the one that you have in your possession. Even if it was only worn for one day, it's still just a style match.

It looks identical to the one I have. Plus how many hats are they going to have for one player for a hat that was only worn on one day to be later auctioned off? I'm banking on that's the hat.

I agree with you that it's the hat... it's just that it can't be called a true photomatch unless there's something specifically identifiable in that picture that can be exactly matched to the hat in your possession. If you search on here, you'll see that there have been MANY, MANY discussions about this.

The only reason why I called it a photomatch is because I almost positive it's the hat. I have a game used jersey from Lastings, and there's many pictures of him wearing that jersey, and I can't match it for sure. Therefore, I never posted a picture of him wearing that jersey because he has more than one of them. With this hat there can only be one (I hope).

I dont see a match there either, same on that Markakis bat. Looks like your pointing out random areas on each bat, I would say style match on both. Their is nothing on either bat that would say that is without a doubt a match .

I new people were going to comment.... thats why I didnt say it was an exact photomatch...

with that said I know it is the bat as I got it from an impecable source who got it from the O's... as well... I am not randomly circling areas... I was trying to circle where the tar stopped and started on the bat as well as some ball marks... Getty doesn't have any photos so I did the best I could off MLB.TV

As far as the Markakis goes... no the photo doesn't have a model number on ot, but to me the black tape overlaying the white is perfect

I realize everyone is tough on photomatches, but I have never seen two bats that are exactly alike, as well I have only ever seen two or three perfect photomatches...

I think these are good, and since they are going to hang on my wall, in the end thats all that really matters

Well now see, therein lies the problem. A photomatch is an exact thing, there's no such thing as an "almost photomatch" or as another poster said earlier, "almost positive" its a photomatch. A photomatch must be exact by the very nature of the definition.

I guess I just don't understand this whole photo matching phenomenon. Now I'm not accusing anyone of anything, I'm just new to all of this and it doesn't seem fool proof to me.

So you have a picture of a jersey and it has loose threads or a little dirt speck on it...who is to say you didn't pull those threads or smear the dirt?

I guess this relates more to people who turn around and sell them...if you were collecting them for yourself it would be pointless to fake it.

Anyway, just something I've been wondering.

I never thought photomatches was the end all be all. It's rediculous that people have to freak out about it. It's just a picture, and just an item. With my case I made an assumption because it was only worn once, I assume and hope that there is only one out there, and I purchased it from the team. Sorry I caused this problem.

No need to be sorry. I would have made the same assumption if the item is authenticated as the only one worn on a particular day and I found a photo of the player wearing it on that day.

In any event looks like you got yourself a really nice Milledge cap and as long you are happy with it is all that counts irregardless of it being photomatched or style matched.

Enjoy!

I won this the other night on MLB Auctions. Team USA jersey worn by Gator baseball player Matt Den Dekker. He was drafted by the Pirates but hopefully will come back to the Gators next year. I was going to wait until I received it to post it, but the fine print says it can up to 4 weeks for them to ship a jersey! The auction pics aren't that good, but the front seems to show some good use.

This is true Bert.

If you have other proof that an item was used during a certain game...and you are planning on keeping it for yourself - photo matching is really only a necessity if you are trying to sell the item - or plan on displaying the item with a photo. So really, who cares?

To my eyes, it looks like you have a start with a few bats with the limited images available. Maybe something will be clearer down the line.

BTW, with the kind of collecton you have, this (or the Markakis bat) being matched are probably not major priorities. :D

Nice bat! I'm alway surpised when I see a bat handle showing so much use like this one, yet the barrel doesn't. I would think the barrel would also show many ball marks and use.

Tony

Tony,

Here is info I received from Brian when I asked him a similar question about a Tino bat I have:

Tino and Posada received what we called the epoxy finish. If you have ever seen our Composite wood bat, it's what is on the outside of the bat without the fiberglass. It was a really hard finish but we could not control the weight that it added to the bat. We stopped making it after Edgar and Tino retired.

Oh yeah, the epoxy finish was much thicker and harder than the Smith finish. The problem was we couldn't control how much epoxy would be soaked into the wood. So to get say 12 bats that weight 31oz we were usually making 18 bats and taking the closest to the correct weight, it was very wasteful. They did order bats without finish too.

Hope that helps,
Tom

Game Used 1997 Tony Gwynn San Diego Padres Jersey

Tony Gwynn was a 1st ballot Hall of Famer, 15-time All Star, 8-time batting champion, and 5-time Gold Glove winner. His .338 career batting average is the highest career batting average since one Ted Williams. Gwynn hit .372 in 1997, which is his second highest season batting average next to his .394 average in his 1994 strike-shortened campaign. It has the team San Diego Padres patch as well as the 1997 Jackie Robinson 50th Anniversary patch. The jersey shows pretty good use with loose stitching from multiple washings as well as a few holes near the bottom probably from Gwynn tucking the jersey in. I got this beauty from Howard Wolf. Howard, I can't thank you enough!
