    Thoughts on Joe Morgan Bat

What are your guys' thoughts on this Joe Morgan bat on ebay. I don't know much about vintage bats, but it appears to be cheap, maybe a little TOO cheap, but I'm not sure.

I thought the green was kinda weird myself, but I don't know if there was any green ink on the balls used at that time. Can anyone verify?

It's a longshot, but could it possibly have been used in spring training at an American League team's park? The greenish ink on the A.L. baseballs of the era could have been responsible. The A.L. home team in such a game would have used A.L. baseballs in a game at their park.

A review of Morgan's H & B records shows no documented orders of any 33-inch bats of any model at anytime during his career. During the 1977-79 period, his orders of S44 models were 34.5 inches and 35 inches. Also note that S44 is Morgan's pro stock model. As a general rule of thumb, once a bat's length gets below 34 inches, the number of professional players that use a length shorter than 34 inches diminishes pretty rapidly.

The size of the bat does concern me...which makes the green marks on the bat even more interesting. I have several Reds bats from this era with similar green marks that are from the bat rack at Riverfront Stadium. I've included a picture of the Reds Dugout depicting the bat rack. It is pretty evident how color transfer would occur when players would slide bats in and out of the rack.

I appreciate all of the responses guys, but this bat seems to have too many questionable characteristics to pay that much money for. thanks, Ricardo

Diamond I am not sure if you mean by that picture that the green would be left on the bat???
If so, yes you are right, but it would leave a streak mark as in any other case for a rack mark.
It would not leave a green ball mark.

Can you post pictures of your bats with the green marks?

Here is just one example of transfer on the end of a Tony Perez bat that would not have been ball marks, rather it is tranfer from the face of the bat rack.
