Question on Red Sox Uniforms in the 1970s

Does anyone know when the Red Sox began wearing the pull over knits, 1974? Didn't they actually wear these knits with the dark blue caps, before they switched to the red and blue caps? Also, it appears the navy blue caps worn by the Sox in the early 1970s, (even late sixties) was a darker color (almost black) then what they have worn for the last 10-15 years. I know the Sox wore dark blue undershirts during the 1980s and most of the 1990s, when did they start wearing the red undershirts. I wish they would go back to the dark blue.

    Thanks

I believe the pullover Red Sox knits first appeared during the 1972 season. And, yes, initially the pullovers were worn with the all-navy lids. I think 1975 was the first season the red crowned, navy brimmed caps were used.

        RJB44:

I think Boston had retired the red/navy design by then. I can't recall if they wore them in 1978 or not.

I think 1979 was when the Bosox resumed wearing the all-navy lids. The photo is from spring training 1979, as Rice is wearing a McAuliffe pullover (Red Sox wore Wilson button fronts in '79 regular season) and Parker has on a NNOB yellow unie (Bucs added NOBs to that style in 1979 regular season). Cap styles are often updated in spring training, unlike uniform designs, which, at least back then, were nearly always unveiled on Opening Day.

I think the red sox wore the knit pullovers just for spring training in 1979, presumably 78 or older jerseys. Has anyone ever seen a 1979 McAuliffe BoSox knit? Your probably right on the lids, knowing they were going to wear the navy lid with new buttons downs, they proabaly just introduced the caps earlier in the spring.

RJB44 The last year for the McAuliffe mfr'd jerseys for the Red Sox was 1978. If you were to find one tagged 1979, it would probably fall into the catagory of the jerseys pictured in the McAuliffe Jersey Information section on this forum.

So Lon.. you agree Jim Rice is most likely wearing his 1978 McAuliffe in this 1979 SI Cover photo?

RJB44 The short answer is yes. If that photo was taken during spring training of '79 Rice would almost have to be wearing the previous years McAuliffe jersey. Most teams ordered jerseys for the upcoming season in spring training. So as a practical matter, if that picture was taken during spring training, Rice (and for that matter Parker) wouldn't have had his '79 jersey available to him.
