Hello Mike:

Can you supply order/shipping records for Cal Ripken jr. F-149 bats? There is currently one on auction at clean sweep but it has no years listed. Anything you could give me on that would be helpful.

Thanks
Brett Herman

Lousville Slugger F149 Cal Ripken Jr professional model bat. This rich brown bat with gold engraving shows amazing use. This has given by Cal to a batboy after a game in the midwest and comes with an LOA from him. The bat measures 35 inches long, has a few fine cracks and looks great. Game used is almost an understatement for this bat! Ripken gamers are among the scarcest and most desirable bats of the past 25 years. http://www.strictlyexchange.com/html/images/space.gif{alt0 = new Image();alt0.src = "http://www.csauctions.com/images/may2406auction/ripkenbat331348a.JPG";alt2 = new Image();alt2.src = "http://www.csauctions.com/images/may2406auction/ripkenbat331348b.JPG";alt3 = new Image();alt3.src = "";alt4 = new Image();alt4.src = "";alt5 = new Image();alt5.src = "";alt6 = new Image();alt6.src = "";}function imageChange(imageID,imageName) {{document.images[imageID].src = eval(imageName + ".src");}}Place Mouse over Image to View

Thanks

Here is the other bat from this auction a 1993 All-star gamer. Can you tell me what or how many All-Star bats were ordered and or delivered in 1993?

Thanks
Brett Herman

Auction Details
http://www.strictlyexchange.com/html/images/space.gifhttp://www.strictlyexchange.com/html/images/space.gifThis Cal Ripken bat was used during the 1993 All Star game in Baltimore. After the game, it was given to an employee of the Major League Baseball licensing department. At the time, the department was experimenting with putting the MLB logo on the players equipment, including bats, hats and jerseys. This logo was placed on this bat as part of that process. The log now appears on all MLB equipment that is licensed by Major League Baseball. Bat shows some light use, is just shy of 35 inches long and weighs 31.4 ounces. Highly uncommon and desirable Ripken bat. http://www.strictlyexchange.com/html/images/space.gifhttp://www.csauctions.com/images/may2406auction/MAY6CON169.JPG

Here is a previous excerpt from one of Mike's posts on P72 Ripken bats that would apply to this batch from 1985 as well as other promotional bats made to Cal's specifications:

Unfortunately , a significant number of Model P72 Ripken bats (Flame Tempered) were distributed in 1985 for promotional purposes, including some that were 35 inches / 33 ounces. Thus, for P72 Ripken bats in 1985 (actually in all labeling periods) you must go beyond the model and dimensions and look for specific Ripken game use characteristics and the provenance of the specific bat, due to the many promotional bats made throughout his career, often in dimensions that matched his professional model bats.

Good luck in future collecting.

Mike

Thanks All-Star

It does say regarding the All-star bat that it is a 1993 bat. I am probably missing something but are you saying that this bat in question was probably a promo bat made for the all star game not a game used bat? Or are you saying there is not enough info. here to make any type of conclusion? Just curious on that one.

Thanks

Brett

Brett - The warning is on Cal's P72 bats was in general as there were many bats made to Cal's specs that were promo bats.

As far as the All Star bat, Mike can probably tell you how many he was shipped for the 1993 game which will give you a good indication of this bat being used then. Hopefully you can get some photo evidence as the logo stamping is distinctive. Since the 1993 All Star game was in Baltimore and Cal was the hometown guy, there is probably some good photos out there.

Great point on that one. I forgot that the all star game was in Baltimore that year. If anyone has good photos of that game let me know. If anyone has info. about the MLB logo and whether or not it should appear on this 93 all star bat that would be great. If I am not mistaken, each player normally would have two LS bats per all star game? Please someone confirm or deny that fact.

Thanks
Brett

Hi Brett--

The bat in the auction appears to be from the 1986-89 labeling period (see the registration trademark after the Louisville Slugger on the barrel)Ripken Jr. did not order any Model F149 H & B bats during the 1983-85 labeling period that are documented in his personal records. Here are the records for Model F149 during the 1986-09 period:

35 inches / 32 ounces Walker finish two orders totaling 30 bats 1988
35 inches / 33 ounces Walker finish two orders totaling 35 bats 86/88
35 inches / 33 ounces Hickory finish eight orders totaling 174 bats 87/88
35 inches / 33 ounces Flame Treated four orders totaling 52 bats 88/89
35 inches / no wt Flame Treated one order totaling 17 bats 1989

It is difficult to tell from the photos whether the finish is Hickory or Black. There is no documentation in his records that Ripken ordered any Black finish bats of any model during that label period, in fact, no Black Finish at all during his career until the early 1990's, when he began to order that finish fairly regularly. The Walker Finish is, for info, a two tone finish with a light golden handle and Hickory barrel. During this period it appears only one promo bat was made off Model F149, so the chances are high that a F149 bat from 1986-89 at least made it to the Oriole clubhouse. As always, be sure to ask about/examine use characteristics.

Regarding the 1993 All-Star bat, note that from 1985 to 1994, in general, the words All-Star Game appear on the barrel label above the player's name, and the year generally appears either above or below the player's name on the barrel. The location city generally appears below the player's name or not at all. Note, however, there may be exceptions to the labeling of All Star Game bats from that outlined above. Ripken's H & B records from 1993 do not indicate clearly an order of All Star bats. The game was played on 7/13/93. On 6/11/93 one 35 inch / no weight designated Model P72 with a sanded Walker Finish was shipped to Baseball Miscellaneous. On 7/13/93 48 Model P72 bats 35 inch / no weight designated were shipped to Anaconda Sports. Additionally, in early 1993, 120 35 inch / no weight designated Model P72 bats with sanded Black Finish were sent to Anaconda Sports.

Hope this information is helpful. A photo search as suggested previously would be very useful in this unclear situation.

Good Luck.

Thanks Mike, I appreciate all of your help and research on this matter. While it may not be conclusive it sure helps a bunch.

Thanks
