I attended the 2006 A's Fanfest, and inspected many of the 2005 jerseys and purchased several. And not all of them had year tags. In fact, as other forum members who inspected the 2005 A's jerseys will confirm, there were a number of obviously game-used star player jerseys, including Zito, Chavez, Crosby, Harden, and Swisher, that had no 2005 year tags. This was consistent with the past several years. Additionally, there were game-used jerseys for players that were tagged with a year prior to that player's A's debut. Equipment Manager Steve Vucinich explained that those "phantom" jerseys were unused blank jerseys from prior seasons, which were used in subsequent seasons for players called-up or acquired during mid-season.

I also obtained several 2005 Giants jerseys from the team, and reviewed others that I did not purchase. And not all of the 2005 jerseys had year tags. While most of the star and veteran player jerseys had 2005 year tags, the "rookie" player jerseys rarely did. For example, the Vizquel, Alou and Schmidt jerseys had year tags. But neither the Cain, Munter nor Accardos jerseys did. The exception is that the few September "Gigantes" jerseys I reviewed had year tags; the Giants wore two sets of "Gigantes" jerseys in 2005. The first set was worn in May and auctioned on mlb.com. In September, they wore a second set. As I informed forum readers months ago, the extra fully size, including 46, and year tagged 2005 blanks were, and still are, sold from the Giants Dugout team stores throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. And the Giants' team seamstress will apply the desired number from the same number stock she uses for the team, on the store jersey for $10 per number. So be careful.

Orioles have not year-tagged since 1999.
I got a KC Royals jersey from a player who was on the 40-man roster but didn't play (part of the season ticket deal) with no year tag, but with an MLB hologram.

The Cardinals' jerseys had year tags in 2005. I purchased four at Fredbird's garage sale after the season (home and road) and saw dozens more for sale -- all were tagged. At stadium auctions during the season and the Winter Warmup in January, every jersey offered, even spring training jerseys, had year tagging.

I have heard of 2005 Cardinals jerseys without year tagging, but it seems all such jerseys were acquired at non-Cardinals-sponsored charity auctions. I don't really have an explanation for that, nor do I assume they're not legit just because they're not year tagged (perhaps they were ordered special and worn with the charity event in mind).

Since the switch to Majestic, year tagging on Cardinals jerseys has been spotty. I've seen jerseys from 2003 and 2004 (all sold by the team) that have year tagging and some that don't. But, every game-worn jersey I saw auctioned/sold by the Cardinals during and after the 2005 season had year tagging.

From my recollection, please correct me if someone feels I am wrong:

05 Mets: Year tag
05 Red Sox: Strip tag tail
05 Phillies: None
05 Rays: None
05 Cardinals: None/One set with year tag
05 Rangers: Year tag
05 Orioles: None
05 Angels: Year tag
05 Brewers: Strip tag neck
05 Mariners: Year tag
05 Diamondbacks: None
05 Twins: Strip tag tail

Also, teams like the Mets and Pirates have the Majestic tag on the inside of the jersey.

Remember, any team that does use year/strip tagging could also have no tagging at all, as long as it is "0062" inside it would not bother me.

I was speaking to a friend today who told me he just picked up some 2005 KC Royals vests and Pittsburgh Pirates black jerseys. He told me they jerseys were mostly common players.

What was interesting is that some of the home and road vests didn't have any Majestic tagging in the tail. These shirts are completely void of any of any type of tail tagging as normally found in current jerseys. They simply have the size sewn on top of the inside "0062" washing tag. They never had a tag, and thus, it was never sewn into the jersey and there was no chance it was removed by the player or team. For example, I have seen this type of size tagging next to the washing tags on Dodgers jerseys, however, the Dodger jerseys also have the standard Majestic tag in the tail.

This should come as no surprise, as there is absolutely no consistency to Majestic tagging.
