I say this helmet on Jim Yackel's website. I know there are a lot of nice things said regarding his items on this website. Would like your opinions on this Marino gamer before I consider purchasing it:

http://www.jimyackel.com/13Marino03-09JG.JPG

#13 DAN MARINO, Riddell VSR-4 size 7 1/4--7 3/4, from 1995. The "13" identifier is affixed to the back in seperate numerals and written inside above the right ear hole. DOLPHINS cervical pad decal. The velco communications gear fasteners remain intact. Light but noticeable game-use is evidenced through scattered minor scuffing on the shell, plus light perspiration staining on the interior padding. A very nice piece worn by the class of 2005 Hall of Famer.

Thank you.

I don't know too much about helmets, but I have purchased a few jerseys from Jim in the past and was satisfied each time. He has a great rep in the hobby though and I would tend to trust him.

With that said, people make mistakes when authenticating. I know if I was in the market for a game worn helmet, especially one in that price range, I would contact aeneas (Robert). The information regarding NFL helmets that he has shared with the forum is incredible. If ever there was an expert on NFL lids, it's him. Best of luck!!

See Robert's (aeneas01) comments about Yackel's Marino below (third post from the bottom):

You'd have to ask Robert what problems he's referring to exactly but if he's not comfortable with it, I wouldn't touch it.

There is a current listing on Ebay for a game used Dan Marino helmet. Here is the link:

If I were you however, I would search postings on this gameuseduniverse site to see if Aeneas01 has ever analyzed the Marino helmet current for sale on Ebay. Usually Aeneas01 would know if this on is legit or not.

Well, here is some info I dug up from previous posts by Aeneas01. Looks like the helmet for sale on Ebay has previously been analyzed, and it may not be a real Marino gamer. Here is the link:

Robert was looking for a photo of Marino wearing a helmet with a single clip. I think other than that, he thought the helmet was good. Here are some photos that back up the helmet. All the photos are from 1987 and the DOLPHINS front bumper match up. Note the single facemask clip. The game photo from Getty Images is from early 1987 versus the Buffalo Bills.

Hi Buc, thanks for the additional photos. In re-reading Robert's previous posting, I now see that he thought the helmet indeed looked pretty good. So thanks for clarifying, and thanks for the additional photos... Looks like the one currently for sale on Ebay could very well be the real deal. It is a very impressive helmet.

How can you tell that from the pics? What is the difference between that facemask and these:

There is no difference other than the one on the helmet was produced in 1996. I sent an email to the seller asking for the date code, which he provided to me in his reply.

The helmet is a sweet buy, even if the mask is the wrong year. I have been looking to get a legit one for years. One sold on American Memorabilia for over 8 grand a few years ago.

Prob is, why would someone change out the mask to a new one 10 years later? Could be a legit reason, but my first gut reaction is because the helmet wasn't carrying the correct mask for a Marino when first obtained. At least that's a question to pose to Jim.

Here is a pic of what looks like this same helmet that is for sale on ebay. Click the link. The front DOLPHINS sticker looks to match up perfectly with the clips like on the helmet in question.
