Curious what the O's experts think of this one. I have not owned this style before but a couple things about it seem odd. The first being the interior padding. I've never seen padding like that in a 70s/early 80s era ABC helmet. Has anyone else? The other being the apparent outline of a previous and wider paint job on the front panel. Any ideas? Also, are the numerals and logo type/style correct? Thanks.

Let me preface by saying I don't know jack squat about baseball batting helmets. However, I do know that the facemask attached to this helmet is from a youth's model football helmet. Doesn't look like the model facemask I've seen on Roenicke's helmet before; i.e. black bar metal mask, and supposedly Bert Jones type palstic Riddell BD-9. FYI, I've never seen the latter, just what I've heard.

Here's the correct link: Gary Roenicke Batting Helmet (http://cgi.ebay.com/Orioles-Gary-Roenicke-Game-Used-Baseball-Batting-Helmet_W0QQitemZ130319651044QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_ DefaultDomain_0?hash=item1e57a810e4&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1205%7C 293%3A1%7C294%3A50)

For some reason the link you posted directed me elsewhere?

Wow, that's really interesting. I'm not a football guy so I hadn't even thought about whether the face guard would've originated from a youth helmet.

Thanks. No idea how that happened.

the item is all bad......I can go into more detai later but first of all the face mask is all wrong but secondly the font of the Oriole bird logo is not the one that used during Roenicke's tenure (only used briefly for double flap helmets in 1987 & 1988)...Also there is a bad paint job going there as well...

is the seller a member of the forum?

Uni Watch News Ticker: … I’ve run plenty of photos of Gary Roenicke’s faceguard (http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z58/kekdogg/1979%20World%20Series/Game%205/0507082356.jpg). But here’s something new: According to the seventh-to-last graf in this article (http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/thetoydepartment/2009/07/he_still_has_the_wild.html), mask was taken from Bert Jones’s football helmet. Only problem with that story is that Roenicke’s mask doesn’t seem to match any of the designs that Jones wore (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=bert+jones&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2&aq=f&oq=bert+jone) (with thanks to Bryan Duklewski).

Roenicke says he wore a guard for two years. It's likely in that case that he would've used more than one helmet. Maybe as many as three or four. Who knows. I personally don't doubt that Roenicke's first guard came from a Jones helmet. We just haven't seen a picture of it. On the other hand, I guess he might've been misinformed about whose helmet it belonged to, hence the mix up with the story. Anyway, it's hard to tell exactly but the guard he's wearing on his '81 Topps card looks different than the one shown in the screen capture.

In this photo, Bert Jones is wearing a Riddell BD-9 facemask (http://www.tigerrag.com/wp-content/uploads/bert_jones.jpg). However, the mask that's attached to the helmet in this auction is a youth's version of the Riddell BD-9. So, either the helmet's bogus, or, the Bert Jones story is bogus?
